If I were Kaboul, I would read all the comments of the posters here, on what he should do if they were him.

All our set plays are embarrassing. As someone else said, why bother with them? Cut out the middle man and give the ball back to the opposition so we can get on with the game.

The tedious charade of Bale, Kaboul, VDV, Defoe and Modric mincing around over the ball then blasting it into the stands or failing to clear the first man is boring to watch.

We have had some success with short corners, but I believe getting the ball into the box gives us a much better chance of it ending up in the back of the net and I much prefer long corners.

The same applies to throw-ins within range of the goal - long throws can produce good scoring chances whereas short throws can often result in losing the ball to the opponents without there being the opportunity of a shot on goal.

Yes, our set pieces need a lot more practice overall; when they are really effectively taken, it can make a huge difference.

Can only remember one short free kick recently and Kaboul
after the usual rigmarole blasted it into the stands.
Wish we take more of them rather than VDV or Bale almost getting it up and over.
I like the reference to Barcelona At corners their tall players press on the half way line, whilst the short ones get on with the game.

It's our shooting that lets us down.
How we are third I just don't know.

We have one attack pattern this season on corners that has worked 2 or 3 times so we have repeated it on almost every corner till recently which is Bale running across the box to the front post to head the ball in. This is why we cant beat the first man because they always have to stand in the same place to cut the corner out. The delivery of our corners and free kicks is poor but the other problem is the movement and placement of our players is poor. Then on the other hand we are awful at defending corners.

I did a coaching session on short corners with my football team just before christmas. They're U9 and have seen teams taking short corners on TV and decided they were going to start doing them. All they ended up doing was short little Chuckle Brothers passes (to me to you) until they got closed down and had the ball taken off them.

I was furious as we take decent "proper" corners so I decided to do the training session.

As I said to them, there are two MAIN reasons for taking short corners, one is to change the angle of the delivery the other is to gain ground towards the goal. My team are still hit and miss at doing it but they're 8 and 9 years old and are learning.

My youngest son (who is in my team) was watching the Man City game with me and was screaming at the TV to do something with the ball at these corners. He asked me why they were dithering about and not doing anything (like his team had been doing initially) I had to reply that I didn't know.

We're the same at free kicks as well (like another poster said) messing with the ball unti the players in the wall are only 2 yards away by the time the shot comes in, if it comes in at all. It's very frustrating, almost like a trade off, as we've got better during open play we get worse at dead ball situations.

If I was Kaboul I would sew a tail into the back of my shorts and walk around growling at the opposition players.

They are a joke we do have a few big players: Adebeyor,Kaboul,Dawson,Bale,Sandro when he plays, more than enough to be a threat at corners but we are woeful, needs to be improved for sure.

The odd short corner is fine, but we're getting the balance wrong I reckon. You get a lot more spring when running into the box than when you have to stop that run and hang around in the box waiting for a delivery.

We do like a bit flexibility in our play and short corners give you that, but definitely give me more of Bale bombing it to the near post to leap and get a flick on.

Well.....we haven't been debating short corners for a while, I remember a lot of frustration on corners under Poch, but.....this video of the Notts County manager defending their short corners is 🔥. Really interesting. Really smart and from how he he talks at least, looks like a manager with an interesting career ahead of him. From this video there's a very strong case for us to never lump a corner straight into the box ever again??

It's a good point to be fair. A corner just allows the defence to get organised in the box and it's always congested. We did have good set pieces last season but think more from free kicks than corners. It's often when the defence are moving out where better chances come though. It's funny that we pass the ball out from the back to draw opponents out but the same approach is not often used for corners. I think there's a good case to work the ball out of the corner and pull defenders out a bit first.

He's completely correct, though like anything, I'd say variety is the spice of life. The same can be said for throw ins, nothing more irritating than watching the defending team marking up your players while everyone waits for the full back to jog up and wipe the ball before taking a throw. Every player should be instructed that if the closest player takes the throw and their team mates immediately start looking to get into space.

I wonder if one day clubs will start to issue "dynamic" tactical situation instructions to ball boys/girls - like normal status get the ball in quickly we want to wear down the opponents - versus, ok we are down to 10 hanging on a bit....please do take your time

Isn't this something Ange has talked about? Taking throw-ins as quickly as possible? I believe he said it's part of our focus in training - We never stop...
