Do we need him?

Sanchez and Dier looked solid today and with Romero to come in as well as Rodon as back up we seem covered.

Could spend 55 million euros elsewhere.

We have been here before with them. In isolation and single match instances they can do great things but over an entire season they will always fail you in specific moments where it matters most.

Gotta love fans. One good performance against City and suddenly all of last season's poor performances are forgotten!

Exactly. They were great today, but dont forget the performances over the last few years under 3 different managers...

Quote from Emery on Torres:

"Pau Torres is an amazing player - I think he’s top," Emery told football.london.

"I've been a coach in Sevilla, PSG, Arsenal and I’ve never seen a centre-back like Pau Torres.

"I think he’s going to play at the highest level, he’s playing now in the national team but he can play in the top teams in Europe very soon."

I feel like this would only be done with the Kane money. Otherwise move on to cheaper alternatives.

A bit more info here:

Sunday’s edition of AS has an article on Spurs and and the Villarreal player, and starts off by saying: ‘Pau Torres said no to Tottenham’s offer without hesitation’

Premier League club haven’t given up and are ‘willing to increase’ their proposal to the player to tempt him to move to London. Villarreal are thought to be ready to accept around €55m, and it’s very much presented as the player pushing the whole thing away.

Despite a ‘dizzy’ offer, AS say people close to Pau Torres believe his future at Villarreal is ‘safe’ for the coming season, and he won’t be going anywhere.

I imagine he's in the 'if Harry Kane leaves' budget bracket.

If tonights Kane ITK is accurate I don't think we'll be going back in for him and will instead look at Milenkovic

Sounds like we are relying on Villarreal pushing him out. If they really want the money they may accept and try convince him to go.

Agreed, I kinda feel like we're needlessly pushing this one. No doubt he's a quality player but you can't blame the kid for wanting to stay put so unless Villareal are needing the money then I don't see why we should continue down this path.

In the same way that I don't want Kane here anymore because he doesn't want to be here, I don't particularly want us to sign anyone that feels like they're being forced out the door of their current club.

Romero came because we showed intent and he responded to that. He could've stayed at Atalanta to play CL football but saw the bigger picture. That's the kinda player I want at my club.

Is he really worth €55m? I don’t know much about him but I haven’t really seen anything to suggest he’s worth that sort of money.

I think if Kane left for, say, £120m, and that money only managed to buy us Pau Torres & Lautaro Martinez with a small amount of change, I’d be quite underwhelmed given how many players we need.

The irony is that Dier was also brilliant against City last season when we beat them 2-0 under Jose. He's always been pretty good in these types of games where he can just sit deep and clear the ball away - doesn't mean he's not still a very flawed defender.

Not sure why we keep pursuing a player who obviously doesn’t want to join us.

Assume we are getting some encouragement from his camp to do so and maybe we think if we offer him enough he will come because let's face it most footballer's will move for enough cash.
Other side of it is maybe his side are using our interest to see if one of the big boys come in so they are encouraging bids from us in hope that one of the big boys panic that we might actually get him.
Or another likely reason is we know he won't join us but happy for stories to continue about our interest as it can panic other selling clubs / players that we are talking to not to get too greedy because we have other options.

It's not always straight forward why we are being linked to a player.

We had a really bright start last season then everyone figured out our tactics and the referenced centre backs imploded.

It’s a good sign that they played well yesterday but we still need to add another quality centre back.

I would also keep Sanchez.

Thing is, Sanchez is probably the only one we can actually get good money for and he's also pretty shit at LCB (remember that West Ham game? *shudders*) where he'd likely be playing since Romero is right sided.

For me, it makes sense to sell Sanchez while there's interest in him and use the money to help bring in someone like Pau Torres (or equivalent) with Dier, Tanganga and presumably Tomiyasu, as backup/rotation options.
