It is strange how fees are negotiated with the club first before ascertaining whether a player is interested in the move. That just defies all logic. You'd obviously do both together - get basic interest from the player and a green light from the club that there's a negotiation to be had. There's no reason at all it needs to be sequential.

It's also not how it seems to usually happen these days, so even stranger. We nearly always hear that personal terms aren't an issue and have been sorted but the clubs need to agree a fee etc. Strange news day. Who knows what the real truth is. We'll find out soon enough I guess.

I'd rather attract winners than mercenaries and clearly we get turned down due to lack of success rather than cash in this occasion and lopetegui aswell
Most winners are mercenaries unfortunately in the modern game. City didn’t get to be the top by slowly breaking in, they threw money at top players despite not being in Europe to begin with.

Kane isn't going for the money. Pau Torres didn't sign for us for the money seemingly. I can think of De Jong and De ligt as other players that probably didn't get more money than they could have with us to go to clubs that win regularly.

You can add Walker going to win things to that list as well

Some graphics about why we may want him I found on the United forum. His passing is outrageously good. He should in theory be a perfect partner to Romero. Main criticisms seems to be he isn't great in the air, and isn't a no nonsense defender. However Romero is. Also shows why we are considering him and Kounde, they seem very similar in areas. The stats show Torres is one of the best CBs in Spain no doubt.

The clear strengths of Torres are his progressive passing, tackling and ball carrying and these lend themselves to Villarreal’s style of play and La Liga in general where there is a general expectation to play out from the back. His duels % percentage is very good but Aerially not so much so highlights his tackling and reading of the game but Aerial duels are a crucial part of Premier League football.

Romero is a pretty complete defender and quite physical which will suit the style of play but I have reservations about Torres physicality and aerial duels for someone who’s 6ft3 its probably not good enough for the Prem. It’s a clear weakness considering he will face more aerial crosses, long balls and physical strikers compared to La Liga.

Sven Botman comes across quite well in the above stats - esp the yard % of progressive passes - and he’s physically far more imposing than Torres. Aerial duels at around 70% while Torres is at 60%. Botman also had the 2nd most competed passes in Ligue 1 last season and high progressive pass yardage per 90 which is quite impressive.

Here’s a quick comparison of the 2 from last season: Botman is Teal - Torres is yellow

Koundé (dream), Tapsoba and Botman would be options i would choose over Torres. I am not his biggest fan, fine player, but not for 40M+

Go for Botman instead… Lille are having an awful start to the season. 3-3 last week and a 0-4 loss against their old manager today.
