So you don't remember that Assou-Ekotto was going to the ACN and Bale would have come in regardless of his injury?

Ekotto was already back from the ACN.

It finished on the 31 January, our game with Bolton was 14th February. It was because he was injured that Bale played that game.

What year are we talking here? I thought this original nonsense came about from 2009/10?

Yeah that;s it....Jan/Feb 2010.

Bale played while the ACN was on mate, and Ekotto was injured beforehand. There were also reports (with quotes, which is a rarity on this subject especially) that he was going to be given a chance at left back while BAE was at the ACN.

Well its not going to change my opinion that Harry was thinking about loaning him out, and there was plenty of noise in the media regarding that - and we know how much of a good relationship he had with the media. Much less chance of them making up bullshit when it came to Harry.

Rubbish. That's pony mate. And not very 'you' so to speak.

Wasn't it a case of Bale playing while BAE was at the ANC but when the latter returned he was straight back in the team at the expense of Bale and then there were thoughts of loaning him out until BAE got injured?

I am quite excited about this Mitchell fella, hopefully it will bring some structure to our spending. Not necessarily uncovering some unknown gems but making sure we a) address the issues in our squad and b) do our due diligence on players we are buying!!

It all sounds good but if I'm being honest, none of it sounds like rocket science, does it?

I mean, how the fuck, as one of the top clubs in Europe, can we not have any of this shit in place. We think we're bad on the pitch, it would seem we're twice as bad off the pitch as well. Fuck knows what they're doing behind the scenes.

I definitely think he was weighing up whether to send him out on loan at the time. He even made the comment about him having to toughen up - where best to do that on loan at a Championship Club. There was a hell of a lot smoke at the time, he was struggling at Spurs at the time, massive potential or not, was young - and its a completely normal consideration for young players to be sent out on loan even if they have a lot of hype surrounding them. Wilshere at Bolton etc.

I really don't think that's an unreasonable assumption in all honesty mate.

Didn't he make that comment the previous year??

This is what I mean, why do you 'definitely' think he was weighing it up?

He made the comment several times IIRC.

Well I think he was weighing it up, that's it really mate. I just don't really believe him on that one personally, doesn't mean I'm right though.

I think he made the comment at the start and then referenced it a number of times.

I just find the whole thing bizarre.

It will make no difference. Levy's ego will get in the way and he will want to have the final say on all signings. We were always destined to be shit.

Nah, Bale moved up to the wing when BAE came back from injury. Remember us having no choice but to face Arse and Chelsea with Modric-Huddlestone as our CM pairing, which then somehow bloody worked?

I'd suggest that getting Modric, Bale (starting his fame with an away hatrick in CL), Adebayor, VDV, King in one team would be a major reason for a successful team in that period - with several of the players predating him but peaking under Redknapp.

Compare that with the squad now and we have no players of the same stature - so we need to wait for a season or two to wait and see if any of the current squad do step up - and by the looks of it we may not succeed with some of the 2013 purchases such as Paulhino, Chirches and Soldado....

So Redknapp was lucky with the players he inherited - and Poch has not been.

And Baldini's purchases don't look to good at the moment

Firstly a Manager still has to get the most out of the players. As for those players.

King hardly played (I am not quite sure where this revisionism has come from in recent months. It seems to be a big excuse in a lot of Spurs forums as to why Redknapp was successful and AVB was not). The year we played in the Champion's League he managed less than 10 games all season. The last year of Redknapp's reign (arguably his best) King played just over half the Premiership games and to be honest was a shadow of his former self by then. Even to the point where Redknapp should have sadly dropped him.

Bale obviously came good but at the beginning of Redknapp's tenure that was not for certain. One thing I did always like about Redknapp is that he wasn't stubborn. From his comments in the media it's clear that in the early days he was very frustrated with Bale and his attitude in training. However Bale got his chance and took it and Redknapp kept faith (people tend to forget the first dozen or so games of Bale's return he didn't exactly play that well).

Modric was misfiring before Redknapp came on board. Not that he had many games before that mind you.

VDV and Adebayor arrived during Redknapp's tenure so can count as his signings.

One quick look at the squad now compared to the one Redknapp inherited and it's clear to me that we have a much stronger squad now. The likes of Lamela and Eriksen are playing just as well as Modric/Bale from when Redknapp first took over. Redknapp inherited an absolute mess with a team that was in the relegation zone. Poch has inherited a team that just finished 6th in the table.
