How could Arsenal let him go. I will never understand this
He had a year left on his contract, wasn't going to sign a new one, wanted to leave. They had no choice really!

Yea he may not have, but he does have the type of qualities we now lack, we didn't have to sign him....we just had to sign someone with the passing range, eye for a pass and mobility to link our play and split a defence etc
We didn't in my opinion have to do that with a club record fee, Arsenal did it last year with Arteta having sold Fabregas
To me though a top team ALWAYS needs a player with that particular skill set in their midfield, without it the best you can be is an organised hard working unit like Everton. We knew all summer Luka was going to leave, he left with days left to replace him.
I'm not doom and glooming or saying we can't do well this season, or even that this season wouldn't have been a step back to go forward anyway (because I think it would) but I think by selling Luka and Van Der Vaart and not replacing Luka's skill set we have ripped the heart beat out of our team and not backed the manager as well as we should, we have removed a large factor of our recent success without really replacing the lost qualities.
We can still do well in a different way I am sure, but we should have brought in JM or someone who offers what he does and we will still have to do so at some point now (also we will have to bring in another striker still and this also could/should have been done before the window slammed)
They should have locked him in cupboard or something.
Southampton need a goalkeeper
