For us to sign Lenglet it needs to be on a free transfer and either, Lenglet accepts a massive pay cut, or Barcelona agree to cover a proportion of his wages.

If Barca was to terminate his contract, they'd have to pay him off. We could then sign him as a free agent and would be negotiating his contract from scratch, rather than needing to match what he currently earns - which is more than anyone would offer him now.

He still has three years on his Barca contract. If the internet is to be believed three years wages would amount to about £45 million and the player will still have a book value of around £15 million so that isn't happening. It's a game of brinkmanship, presumably Clement wants to play, Barcelona want to minimise their loss and Spurs will only be interested if they can't find 'better' value elsewhere.

That's a good point. Theoretically, he could agree to a lower payment in the knowledge that he'd essentially be earning a second salary for those three years. If the two payments roughly matched his current wages, he might prefer to be at a club that wants him rather than one that clearly doesn't. Unlikely to happen though...

We have had a look at him and he is shaky in defence. His quality on the ball is good but fundamentally that’s secondary to his ability to defend which is poor.

This would just be signing next year’s dead wood basically

The one thing about Lenglet that is good is his passing though and you've got to believe that becomes a bigger advantage in Ange's team. I think he wins out over Sanchez for me which is what it might come down to.
Either way it’s weighed against being shite in defence

Really need a first starter CB and to me Lenglet is not the one. Davison, Davies, Tanganga have to go, and Dier as well but he will be the last of the 4 for me. If it's only Lenglet and VdV coming in, it just wouldn't send the message down that we are doing a CB rebuild. Dier will definitely find his way in along the way and it will still be Romero and Dier for a good part of the season.

To me that reads:

Van De Ven or Tapsoba
Tosin
Lenglet

Tosin & Lenglet play backup to Romero and one of the other two.

Yeah that sounds like us. Attempt to deal with a problem position but without going the whole hog. We should be used to it by now, seen it a hundred times. (Not that I think they are terrible players, just not top draw).

Exactly. It’s why we will never be a top club and it frustrates me no end watching other clubs spend big on the issues. It’s not like we are asking for gvardiol it’s 90m max outlay on a position we’ve neglected for years and on players that fit levy’s mo of young fairly cheap and with resale value.

Spending 30m isn't a big fee though. Not even close.

Was thinking the same when I saw that. If by spending £30m in todays market, we think we have spent big, then really don't know where to begin. I think getting both in is possible but we've got to ship out some imo. Dier, Davies, Sanchez, Tanganga and Rodon.....stacked with CB's who are not good enough and don't have a long term future at the club.

At the moment, more keen to see at least a couple of those go and as quick as possible because I'd guess once that happens, will see some us move to bring some in.

Yeah I dont even have the energy to get annoyed by it now. We know what will happen and the subsequent spin.

Well it is more of a reflection that better players will generally cost more. There might be a reason clubs are willing to sell players for more reasonable fees
So Declan Rice was the best player in the Premier League last season?

Mason Mount is better than James Maddison?

So if Van de Ven costs 40m instead that's better for you?

It's better for me if we bring in the better option. Keep in mind Arsenal spent what we are planning to spend on VDV on Saliba, shipped him out on two season long loans until he was deemed to be ready.

He's played one season in the top flight
