It's better for me if we bring in the better option. Keep in mind Arsenal spent what we are planning to spend on VDV on Saliba, shipped him out on two season long loans until he was deemed to be ready.

He's played one season in the top flight
Saliba had played 16 senior matches in France. Van De Ven played 45 senior matches in the Netherlands and then 38 with Wolfsburg. He has far more experience.

I could see the logic behind the Lenglet signing for this season with a back 3 and a player with Cl experiance but now when we want to rebuild with CBs that are able to play a high line i think we should stay far away.

Totally agree . He struggled in a back 3 at times . Can’t see our fullbacks giving that much protection in a back 4 . Think he will get exposed

I see in another thread there are supposedly 2 factors delaying move to Spurs. I'm guessing they are:

1. He's not quick enough
2. He's not great at defending

Sad thing is he would be our best left centre back for a back 4. Just not good enough as a starter if we want to push on. Happy to get him as long as we get a better first choice. Would be far more ambitious if we got VDV and Tapsoba though.

Hear me out.

If the budget is a bit tight I think a good solution would be the following.

Forget Lenlet

Sign VDV and see if Utd will consider a loan with an option for Maguire.

Hes Harry Kanes best mate in the England set up, homegrown and was captain at Utd until today, we lack leadership , especially if Lloris and Hojberg go.

Hes an experienced head that can guide VDV , and fills out Romeros weaknesses aerially and can cover his position. We know he lacks pace but that's where VDV comes in for certain games or Udogies or Spences recovery pace should help to cover.

I'd obviously prefer Tapsoba and VdV but realistically this is more affordable and without Europe we should get by with Maguire Romero VDV and Dier. Then in the summer we reassess

I actually thought Maguire would have been a great signing for Conte playing on the left of a 3, not only does he drive forward, he is also good in the air.

However if we play him in a 2 with a high line, we will be facing exactly the same problems United have with him. He will be exposed. As Dier will be. Lenglet is also a questionable player to play in an attacking 4 at the back.

If we are to play a 4 with on the halfway line, the centre backs have to be quick and good on the ball. The only two players that fit that mould is Romero and Tanganga. Tanganga hasn't played centre back on a consistent basis for years, so not him, which leaves us with Romero.

Hence the need for new centre backs, pace and good on the ball are absoloute musts.

Emerson and Romero are really the only options for our back four at the moment in my opinion. It could get very ugly next season if we don't sign the required defenders.

I would take Lenglet over Dier, Sanchez, Rodon etc, but if we invested, I am sure we could get better options.

I'm not sure what the question was but Maguire is definitely not the answer.

Why do the CBs have to have pace? We had a back 4 under Poch and neither Jan or Toby were particularly quick but you had Walker and Rose that could cover for them with their pace?

I think it's more important that the CBs are good in possession and positional sound. Both can anticipate and read danger quite well (maguire and Romero) so if they make a mistake I'd assume the full backs would recover for them

Also, I did state that VDV should be signed so Maguire would be a rotation option dependant on our opponent not the main CB signing.

Captain of Manchester United until today and CB for England that's reached a final and a SF in the last few years. Hardly a joke is he?
His performances have been a joke. So much so so he's become a meme. He's a player that turns slower than milk and there's a reason he's being moved on by UTD. Imagine him in a high line chasing rashford back to goal.

He fits into England because they play defensive and deep and ask him to just head the ball and keep it simple. He would be a disaster for us.
