Early days, but the balance looks so good with him, Toby and Verts. Both the Belgians ball playing and comfortable out in the fullback areas, and Sanchez using his blistering pace in the middle and covering in behind both of them.

He conceded a corner in the first half today, from a situation where any of King, Alderweireld or Vertonghen would have been better positioned and calmly carried the ball out, rather than having to make a challenge.
So he's 'suspect positionally' because he conceded a corner. Lol.

One play does not make him "a bit suspect positionally"

I thought the defense was well positioned today - including Sanchez. Even more credit when you consider that it is the first time they played together.

All ex Ajax, must be something in the water over there.

During one of Everton's corners, he was stranded about 15 yards from goal when the ball was swung in at around 10 yards when Everton headed high. Could have been a goal conceded. Actually I was wondering why he had not dropped back when the corner was about to be taken.

His positioning was good in general, but if he's being put in the same sentence as Ledley and playing alongside Jan and Toby (all highly experienced world-class CBs), I am entitled to be picky...am I not? All three of them would have been better positioned in that situation, so in comparison to them his positioning was suspect. I really don't understand how that is difficult to accept, unless you were wearing rose-tinted glasses or a blindfold.

Had it been slightly higher up the pitch, an Everton player could have run in behind and been through on goal, rather than the ball going out for a corner. On this occasion, it was of little consequence, but Everton were still gifted a corner from a nothing situation. It was actually the sort of error that Dier was routinely criticised for by a contingent of fans who kept singling him out as the weakest link in our defence last season. Dier is a competent CB, but his positioning is also suspect when compared to that of a world-class CB.

He's a 21 year old CB who just made his debut. Makes his performance incredibly impressive in that context.

Not at 21 they wouldnt. Whilst your at it why don't you find videos of Messi at 16 and say his finishing looks suspect.

Looks an incredibly balanced back 3 with Sanchez, Toby and Verts. Sanchez is so quick and he has really great players on each side.

That was my take away from the match. Sanchez allows Alderweireld and Vertonghen to push up even higher in the attack when the opportunity presents itself.

And I thought Dier played his best match of the season sitting in front of the back 3 - he seemed really involved today.

That is true, but also quite irrelevant. He is playing alongside them now, not when they were 21, and in a team with the best defensive record in England over the past two years. We didn't sign either of them when they were 21 (we considered Alderweireld a couple of times before finally signing him, but waited for him to continue his development and prove himself more first). Therefore, I am hoping that it was a one-off and not something that will happen repeatedly.

Seriously judging one mistake within a players first game in the division is not really fair.

Looking forward to the compilation video of his performance as I didn't get a chance to see any of the game today!
