I can respect all of that, and I do hope you don't think I'm arguing with you for the sake of it.

I see a guy who is unable to read the game, unable to track the flight of a ball & is capable of 'shutting off' at the worst possible moment, while you still hold out hope that with the right addition(s) could replicate that first season form. Again, I'll happily be wrong if it means we'll benefit in the long term.

We simply have a differing opinion on this particular matter/player which, at the end of the day, is what this place is all about.
A player either has potential or he doesn't. We all get it spectacularly wrong on a regular basis so don't feel bad if you don't see it in a player.

I've been a huge critic of his in the past year or so, but if he can play with that confidence against a physical team then there's hope for him yet. It's the first time I've watched him and been impressed since his first season.

I'd love for him to push on, but it's clear he needs an experienced head beside him. No more Dier and I think he might just be worth persevering with.

Much better today but again, one game doesn't prove much. He's had far more bad games than good. That said, I'd much rather keep him than Dier.

Echoing the comments here, brilliant performance today. Dominant in the air and much better composure.

Not too much ro read into the opposition as not the typical strike force for Burnley so he had a slightly different challenge and played well.

Honestly hope he kicks on for the remainder of the season, he is the one player at the back who has potential to be in the team long term. He needs an organiser next to him, not just someone who shouts a lot but someone who reads the game. Toby until the end of season makes sense, review in summer then.

Next to a leader who covers in behind, he could be the right partner. Was aggressive today, stepped out from the back and shut down their hold up play. And when he had to drop into the line, won every arial ball against a tough team and made some great athletic blocks. Passed the ball quickly too, which he's normally poor at.

He still looked out of position at times, but there is a player in there if he has consistent starts and a proper partner. Jose clearly sees it too because he's the player who seems to not get dropped atm. Hopeful stuff for sure

Sanchez was totally dominant today and deserves all the plaudits. I think it's safe to say that Dier has his work cut out for him, hopefully he's motivated to get better and improve on his concentration.

For us to play higher, we need someone who can defend space with athleticism, and Sanchez is that player. Defending space and runners is the most difficult thing to do as a CB, it’s why these athletic defenders cost a premium. Saying he was merely good is selling Sanchez’s performance short; I thought he was near perfect.

Thought he was very good today. As @Gbspurs said, he's probably the most salvageable of our CBs but it seems like he needs a more experienced head next to him which Dier is not.
