The curious case of Erik Lamela, can’t fault his effort but really off you look at it, he is just squad filler. He certainly isn’t ANYTHING like the player we thought he was going to be. Nice guy obviously but would much rather a youth player got his role TBH. He Bastard Sons of Lamella will surely disagree.

Personally I didn’t really have any thoughts on what type of player he was going to be for us coz I never watched him. I think people just thought he was going to be like Bale, whether they had seen him play or not.

I just want any new signing to contribute on a consistent basis. Injuries aside I think he’s done that on the whole but he’s certainly not a Son type player who’s going to bang you in 15/20 goals a year but there’s more measures of productivity than goals and assists.

I get why he splits opinion, though, for sure.

I don’t have a any problem with him, I just don’t think hes good enough if we want to improve. That’s an easy question to answer, would City or Liverpool have him as an advanced midfielder? I even doubt if United or Arsenal would tbh. Like I said I have no problem with him in the squad but he shouldn’t be a starter.

Ok let's just agree you disagreed with my whole original post then shall we? Maybe you could have added this to your original gripe at the first message where you just claimed he isnt very good because he had no pace? My opinion hasn't changed I still consider him a nearly player as in he nearly does it well enough but isnt quite cute enough to pull it off so I just think his execution is poor but still think the idea of what he is trying to is usually good
I agree he's a nearly player as you state. Unfortunately I doubt he'll ever be the player we'd always hoped for.

As it stands I wouldn’t disagree with that, I see him more as a squad player too. However, he can play better and if anyones form in front of him drops and he’s playing well then he is good enough to start.

I think he’s be a good squad option for Liverpool and most other clubs in the top 6. Like a lot of players, though, they benefit from having a run of games.

This is the debate I prefer, when he plays behind Harry as one of the 3 he simply isn’t enough of a goal threat. Look at Shaqiri, no I wouldn’t want him but he’s more of a threat in England than Lamela. Again I like the kid, he’s a grafter but he doesnt contribute enough positive outcomes.

For me it’s not about the goals, though. I don’t think it’s his primary role, especially when you have Son, Kane, Eriksen and Alli playing.

He could do with scoring more, though.

Pretty much showed why he's such a good player for us. He created some of our best chances and his tenacity and work rate was ultimately a huge reason why we won the game. If you don't understand football, you won't get it, and if you haven't got it by now, you never will.

Yet you fail to look at yourself and just blame the player. The problem is with your expectations, not with Lamela. If you don't see all the good things he brings and are just fixated on the fact that he was supposed to be this inside forward who was going to bang in 15 goals a season then that's a problem with your analytical capabilities.
You seem smart so I’ll reply.

Lamela’s pressing is excellent and contributes a lot to our style of play. He is willing to get stuck in and its easy to see why fans respond to that.

Let’s compare the last 3 seasons in the EPL for Lamela (aged 24-27) with Alex Iwobi (aged 20-23). You’d expect Lamela to post better stats over three seasons because he is older and has been playing in a better team. I think most fans would also be upset if we bought an Alex Iwobi or similar.

Iwobi had played made 87 appearances to Lamela’s 53 in that time and twice as many minutes. So as you read, multiply Lamelas stats by two to compare like for like.

Lamela scores more (every 343 mins vs 587 mins). He shoots about as often on goal and on target a bit more often.

However Lamela has missed 8 big chances compared to Iwobi’s 7.
Lamela has 5 assists compared to Iwobis 14.
Lamela has 9 big chances created compared to Iwobi’s 18.
Lamela had made 1173 passes to Iwobi’s 2984.
Lamela had worse pass completion.
Lamela made 223 forward passes to Iwobi’s 743.
He made 11 throughballs to Iwobi’s 21.
Lamela was dispossessed 60 times to Iwobi’s 112 (remember he played half as many minutes).

So on ALL these attacking/ buildup metrics Lamela is worse than or about as good as Iwobi - a younger player in a worse team.

Defensively, Lamela wipes the floor with Iwobi but we are no longer a side (like Arsenal) looking to break into the top 4. We need attacking midfielders who are better offensively than Lamela. We need players like ... Lo Celso.

So there are good reasons for fans to be dissatisfied with Lamela. He is underwhelming offensively compared to underwhelming players at our competitors. That is not a crazy thing to suggest, even if his detractors must acknowledge his significant contribution in transition.

He’s back!!!!!!

I’m not saying this to take the piss, but you must be really pleased we managed to sign Tanguy. You were adamant that we wouldn’t manage it so what do you think made this transfer happen? Genuine question

When you have so many people in a thread who don't like a player, and you still get people disliking their comments and calling it spam, it really does highlights who the rose tinted brigade are.

Pep wouldn't have suffered Lamela for more than 3 months.

So what? A pot plant could buy titles at The Sheik Mansour team.

The point is, good players make errors there they get dropped. Walker had a couple of bad games, droppped straight out, and that's a first choice player. Ruthless. This is a fringe player that has been inconsistent at best, shocking at worst for 6 years, and here he is starting the first game of the season.
