I'm disappointed and not a fan but he is still young. Who's to say he doesn't go on a crazy Bale-esque development spike over the next few season?

The good points about Lamela is they he isn't afraid of the seeking out the ball and trying (even though at the moment the end result is crap every time) and his attitude seems good. When he is dropped you don't here crap from his agent etc

This is it.

Why is everyone discounting that he might develop? He's only 22! Younger than Mason, younger than Rose - who has developed so well after looking awful last season.

If he was 28/29 then I could understand wanting to get him out the door but he will only get better. He works hard and has a good attitude which are the bedrocks of positive development. I think he will make it with us. In fact, I am certain of it.

7 assists and 5 goals in 29 starts for what is kinda his first proper season and at his age isn't terrible.

Its the price tag that folks have a problem with and call him shit because of it which is ridiculous

Saying that is as silly as being certain that he won't make it with us.

Some players develop at later stages, others at earlier. The trouble with Lamela in comparison to players like Bale who showed glimpses of talent and then became consistently brilliant is that Lamela had a great season of top flight football, but has gone quite far backwards.

I think one more season for him to show that he's making real strides makes sense, but I wouldn't begrudge the club getting a good fee for him while they can.

huge positive assumption ......... good attitude and works hard sounds like a retriever, this is £30m player we are talking about. I think we have a right to expect more even at 22.

In terms of risk management thought what fee could we get for him now, maybe £15m? Is it worth taking that sort of hit at his age? Based on what we know about the PL all it takes for a player to command stupid fees is 1 good season, especially as a forward.

Commercially he is very appealing (hence why he is still involved with Argentina kit launches) so if he starts spanking in goals it will be big news and everyone will want a piece of him.

I think the club would rather work with him and see what can happen instead of cashing in now. The potential win heavily outweighs the worst case scenario.

Don't get me wrong, I have been one of Lamela's biggest critics on here as he drives me bloody mental but now the dust has started to settle on this season I'm willing to see what our coaching set up and "state of the art" training centre can conjure up this summer.

There is a player in there somewhere and we owe it to ourselves to find him.

A good attitude and work ethic is what separates the Harry Kane's from the Ravel Morrison's.

You don't have any rights at all from what I can tell, but I'd be interested to hear why you think you do.

He's 23 and in his 5th season playing regularly at a top club and his fourth season in a major European league so I don't buy the comparisons with Mason and Rose - who've both had to cope with significant changes of position. They're both players who were a little short of quality in their original positions but the club felt - justifiably it seems - that they both had qualities that could be worked with. The difference with them and Lamela is that they were on low wages and had low sell on values so the risk verses reward justified it.

With Lamela, he does draw a significant wage and does have a significant transfer value, which could be realized and reinvested. Though if he has another not-so-great season, this value will decline further.

These are the factors that will be weighed up in the Summer. I'd like to see him start some on the remaining games behind Kane to see what kind of job he can do there as I don't see a future for him as a wide player.

No-one else corrected that so had to butt in there.

I would say that 26 years as a full paid up STH gives me a right even if it's simply a right to expect - clear enough for you?

No sorry but it's not, and I wasn't having a pop at you even though my post got some funny ratings and may have looked that way. We seriously have no rights when it comes to this kind of thing and there are absolutely no guarantees whether you buy one ticket or 26 season tickets. Clearly you know this though as you've kept going all these years despite much worse players and quality of football. I just don't think a price tag means you can expect instant results and especially from a young player. We all wanted him to perform right away but we signed him for five years and he still has time to come good.

I hear you but I guess we will just have to agree to disagree ....... I am pretty sure Levy, Baldini and MP have all expected more from Lamela this season than he has delivered and given the investment they have made both in terms of money and reputation they have a right to. I have also have a right to expect more doesn't mean it carries any weight but it's my right.

Encouraging to see those stats

Shows he has an end product

He certainly has goals in him too, there's still hope he can end up a very good player for us

I think he'll never look spectacular, like we all probably expected him too (well he's capable of things like the Rabona) because he lacks the pace and power to be a Ronaldo type - but those stats and his age certainly suggest he could be a very functional member of the team

He's got an eye for a key pass, can score goals and has the work ethic to track back and put a shift in fof the greater good of the team

Maybe he'll be our Dirk Kuyt in as far as becoming a valuable cog in our machine without looking like a world class operator (or maybe my cousin in Rome is right and he will become the next Ronaldo even without his strength and pace, I think he needs to work on his explosiveness and probably regain his confidence)
