I'm gutted it didn't work out, was excited at the prospect of him, if the reports of a potential £20m sale are true let the kid go back and rebuild.

Let hope we have learned a few lessons with Erik transfer.
But hindsight is most used of all the senses on SC.
Good luck to the lad hope it goes better for him IF he moves.

Serie A and the PL seem to be counter leagues in that successes there fail here and vice versa. In the last year we've seen Lamela, Jovetic and Cuadrado fail here while Coutinho who failed in Italy is a huge success here, you could arguably add Salah to the list too.

Can anyone remember the last time a player who was a success in Serie A did the same in England ?

Darmian is doing pretty well already.

The only player in our side I look forward to watching play. Sadly though mostly he has disappointed ... but then that is in a side who play a brand of football that barely registers above freezing point on an excitement scale. I like seeing his name knowing that we have one non production line player in the team

I'd personally like to see what he's capable of in a team that actually tries to play decent football with attacking intent.

Alas he may have to move for me to see that as we're boring as seagull shit and will probaby remain so for the rest of the season

Its not anti football that loses the ball, gives away free kicks in dangerous areas, has no right foot and can only get to by line vs Ben Me.

Sorry, its just not.

Not saying our system is perfect but we finished 5th last year for all the career destroying we have done - some players just cant cut it.

There have been plenty that i thought could at us - like Gylfi, who could have been a star here. But Lamela is not built for this league and dare I say it, doesnt appear to have been working harder at being so.

He doesnt look like he has even tried to get stronger, improve his tacking, improve the speed at which he releases the ball overall.

It wasnt so long ago that a promising young player came to our first team and within not really that much time became the most expensive player in the world. I just cant believe you are being this dramatic over Erik Lamela.....

An absolutely superb post. Well said.

The only player in the team right now with genuine flair and great technique, he was adapting to the league at the end of last season and has only just got back from his summer break. If we get rid of him, we'll only have Pritchard left as the flair player. We've basically become another George Graham team.

No he isn't, what flair and good technique has he shown?

Thought he would eventually settle into the no10 role and become our David Silva, unfortunately his performances have been well below par on the whole.

Like with Soldado I'm just gutted that it hasn't worked out and the club has ultimately wasted money and time on players that couldn't cut it.

So let's get this straight , the attacking midfielder shouldn't be trying through balls?
Have I got that right?

Not sure why I'm still bothering but here we go. When I made that comment he was giving the ball away trying to play passes which weren't on in any way shape or form. He was blatantly trying too hard looking for killer balls which I think in part was because of what he believes is expected of him. When i said there are other people in the team who's job it is to pick the lock. What I meant was if he's consistently losing the ball in a game and can't work out when a pass is on or isnt on then give it to someone who can. Eriksen. I would fucking love it if he could work out when to pass and to who in order to create chances, pull the opposition out of position, you know, do all the good things. But he just hasn't shown the nous in order to consistently do so at any point really. He just doesn't read the game well enough. That might not be his fault by the way.

To say Lamela attacking distribution and link up play is better than Eriksens seems bat shit crazy to me when you look at Lamela at times and I don't think he has a clue what he's supposed to do with the ball. Eriksens got other holes in his game and his form has been poor of late but at least he's shown what he's capable of. Linking up play and being generally awesome for 90 minutes. They're just not even in the same league at that job. It's absurd to look at those stats and therefore think Lamela is better than Eriksen at attacking link up play. Mental.

It's clearly not what Lamela is good at. Problem is so far he's shown he can't go round players, he's weak, he's slow, he doesn't read the game well and doesn't link up play well. That's ignoring the giving the ball away thing. So for all the talent that's clearly there... What the fuck are you supposed to ask him to do, where should he play, how should he progress, what the fuck just what the fuck.

Personally I'm happy to give him another year, why not, we don't have much to lose. But jesus it's a real long shot.

I am in a minority, but personally I will be so gutted if/when Lamela leaves. He has managed to make himself one of my favourite players with the odd flash of unpredictably and quality that much of our squad lacks while also combining an undoubted (again, in my opinion) natural flair (which I still think would have flourished and become more consistent) with a real fesity-ness, hard work, commitment and attitude which is lacked by many others, other than a couple of the home grown lads.

One of the players who actually kept me interested during some widespread disillusionment with Spurs.

We moan about the lack of movement and imaginative passing and one of the only players that tries to do it, along with Kane and Mason, is castigated from minute 1 each match day at the Lane whenever he tried it and now he's off by the looks of things.

Ah well, obviously wasn't to be.

You're easily pleased, mate... :joyful:

I like Lamela - kind of reminds me of that goofy puppy dog that just wags his tail and wants to make you happy.

But, I do wonder with Bobby leaving, if he has lost a key mate on the squad. Always see them together on twitter/instagram. Maybe Lamela feels a bit isolated now?

I think he'd be twice the player he currently is if he ever ran with the ball at space rather than the nearest defender. He's obviously not blessed with Bale/Lennon-esque pace, but whenever he gets the ball he seems to naturally head towards defenders rather than towards the space in-between or outside them. Baffling.

Potential Erik Lamela leaving ditty:

Eeee-rik's gone gone gone
But he's been replaced with Son
Erik's gone gone gone
Thirty million was a con
On his left, never right
So one footed it's a fright
When he played on Thursday night
His rabonas were alright
