Lamela's a really important player for a whole host of reasons. I would like to explain them but literally no point with Francis Gibbons spamming the thread.

I am pleased to have the same footballing knowledge and brain as Poch, who clearly loves Lamela.

It's a shame Francis Gibbons can't take over at the scum. ☹️

Clearly love him? Poch is ruthless, and proved by the few times he was on the bench. I like the guy, but if he has a poor game and people express that, there is no need to go on the defence with him. This refers to 'Lamela can do. I wrong brigade'.

I'm not defending him or excusing him but let's be honest there's a full on retard trolling this thread

There's no player in the world that plays well in every single game. Great thing about Erik is, even if his offensive play is not working for him especially well in the odd game, his defensive output and sheer stamina mean that he is contributing positively and importantly to the collective effort.

And that's not even to say that I think he was under par today. More just a reply to some of the crap being spoken here.

Lol you mean rested before or after cl /cup games? Guess he was also ruthless when he dropped Walker, Sissoko, Dier, Alli, Wanyama.
It's called rotation

He's been a main figure in Poch's starting 11 for 3 seasons now, you all really need to give up and give it a rest. The coach rates him a whole lot, it's not like he hasn't had the money or the players to completely replace him.

Let it go

Defensively he was excellent.... tenacious and energetic.

The thing is he isnt being effective in a creative or offensive sense. Not sure why.

He really does remind me of David Bentley,
Lamela and Bentley...lol! Lamela's one of the key reasons we're where we are, and we're who we are in the Poch era. I'd hate to play against him. He'll be chasing lost causes all game, harrying you till his legs fall off. This, whether or not he's having a good game creatively. He invigorates his team mates and sets the example and gives the team a lot of the identity we need and we currently have.

Creatively, he's shown plenty of what he can do...killer passes and great assists, damn hard to dispossess and gets space for himself. The guy never hides, even when he's not having his best offensive game, he'll always give us something.

When I picture us at our best in my mind's eye, what I inevitably see is an image of Lamela haring around like a lunatic. It's like he embodies what the whole enterprise is about.

I do have sympathy with the doubters. His end product and decision making are infuriating at times, but he adds something weirdly intangible to our team whenever he's out there.

Thing is, he is the most crestive player in the side and his work rate means he never seems like he goes missing even if he isnt at his best like is the case with many other creative players in football

Lamela wasn't at his best today but he was no passenger.
He is normally right up for the matches against city as he knows these games will be huge on TV back home.
I guess that is why he demanded to take the penalty.

Why do you assume that's his motivation?

Seriously? This ' worked his nuts off' bs is all any of you have got ..... glad you are all so pleased with the barest of minimums any player should offer let alone one who costs circa £30m

Oh dear, Francis you were given such a lovely opener by @SEANSPURS1975 and his rather overwrought post. Love seeing your crappy uneducated comments champ. At least it proves that the trolls are alive and are still needing to be fed :D

Working his nuts off is what got the ball back for the second goal, in which his subsequent pass instigated the counter....just saying...

Love Lamela and his "never hide" attitude to bits, but his shooting tecnique is proper shabby. That being said, I'd reckon him to have the balls to just put it down the middle.

HIs passing was as poor as anyone else yesterday - collectively we had a 71% pass completion rate - low for us..... but it wasnt a game about possession and keeping the ball

Admittedly a couple of his wayward forward passes towards the end of the game did frustrate me but i could probably say the same about Son too.

For me he is not our most creative player and he isnt used as such. He doesnt see the ball enough to be considered that for me (made 22 passes yesterday compared to 50 odd by Eriksen) and he loses the ball too often in foolish places (7 times dispossessed yesterday)

That being said he is is unquestionably needed in games like vs Man City (4 tackles, most of our non defensive players) and he is relentless in the press albeit still a little haphazardly at times.

While i dont fawn over him like some i have come to appreciate him for what he is -

Amen he has improved and grown on me as a player, he is not the type of player I thought we were getting from Roma. He does press well as you said, although his tackles can be very sloppy, be he has adapted more to the physical game in England the more games he has played.

As for the he is our most creative player, thats nonsense.

Anyone catch motd2 ..... seems like I am not alone in thinking he was embarrassing and piss poor today
He wasn't piss poor but after the penalty incident, the crowd were on his back and he wasn't up to his very high standard - for instance his performance in this fixture last term.

The first half he was excellent, some of his passing in tight situations was magnificent and Son should have put him in with a simple ball, he was making excellent runs and a number of times got into dangerous positions when others were greedy (which isn't a bad thing, i like people backing themselves to score).

However, the penalty incident knocked him a little and in the second half he made 3 or 4 shocking passes when cutting in and it took away how good his performance actually was. But as people say, his energy levels and winning attitude really help push our AM as a unit, he is the most important presser in that group of players and leads by example. I've been on Alli's back this season, but Son and Alli provided that moment of magic which gave us the two goal cushion. We have so many options now and everyone is equally important.

Here is the thing, I rate him! I do not advocate selling him! My point is a very simple one, if he has a stinker then I say it as I see it. That's applies to any player in my eyes. Nobody is amune from criticism.

I understand. However, when you read a lot of what some claim 'against' comments they are constructive criticism. I am on record stating I rate him, but saying that he does frustrate the life out of me, que Monaco at home. Nobody will dispute his work rate.
