It also struck my mind that in 2017 Mourinho signed a 35 year old Zlatan Ibrahimovic. That worked out quite well considering United won the EL and finished 2 second in the league.

Bale won't be a guarantee for success. But if you (...just like me a few days ago) are sceptical wether Bale is good enough, will have an impact etc. Well, having the world class / match winning characters, even when they are "older", can lift a whole team.
