Peresic learning about our glorious history, talking about Zamora, Kaboul and Jamie O’Hara…… and knowing what position they all played….

And he still joined us! Bravo…

Finally, we've replaced Christian Ziege!
Obv a joke....but on a serious note it's not a bad comparison. How did that one work out?

Was pretty happy with this until I read what his wages are. 180k a week seems ridiculous to me. Signing ageing players who's performances will only decline on big wages has been proven time and again to be a bad move. Everyone gets excited over the name and they often start well, then there's a steady decline.

With the signing on fee and wages over 2 years that's at least 25m that could've gone on a younger hungry player ready to break through, who's performances and value would increase.

Don't mean to be a damp cloth!

That number will be including the signing on fee and bonuses mate. Journalists like to word things in a way that it'll cause the biggest sensation and 100k a week plus a signing on fee plus bonuses doesn't have the same shock factor. He won't be getting that number plus all the other benefits.

It's clear now that though that might be the Club's preferred and usual model for signings, it's not Conte's. There'll be time for that to happen in the years ahead, but for now Conte wants experienced first team starters. £25m for a quality, experienced winner that the manager wants isn't bad business for me.

Seeing as this guy is ambidextrous, is it feasible that should Spence be off the table that we go after a second LWB and use Perisic on the right?
Not to be a pedant but ambipedal is for feet and ambidextrous for hands.
Also, I don't think we should move him from where he has had two seasons kicking ass. We have bags of time to get a RWB in.

Sure thing and Edgar Davids was definitely a shit signing at the time… William Gallas was another necessary signing in the past that worked, you need balance. Both players gave us balance and grit/bite where it was needed.

Why is there an obsession with the weekly wages? Total cost is the only real relevant number.

Which deal is more expensive?
A: 10 million pound fee plus 100k a week in wages for 2 years.
B: Free transfer plus 180k a week in wages for 2 years.

I know which the player prefers but what the hell, the club should prefer option B as well.

Agree. Modric looked great for Madrid this year. Pirlo was great for Italy well into his advanced years. Gallas gave us something we benefited from which we probably wouldn’t have been able to get from a younger player at that time. It’s obviously not the case with every older player but the right ones can be real assets.

A lot of the time these debates are presented as a choice between a young and ‘hungry’ player with potential or an old player on high wages with no sell on value. The implication is that the older player will not be hungry but I don’t think it’s as straightforward as that: I have seen plenty of immensely experienced players who show incredible ambition and desire to win and also plenty of young players who don’t seem particularly motivated. Also, even though a younger player has potential sell on value, there’s no guarantee a club will recover the fee they paid for them. Lots of players don’t live up to their potential and are sold at a loss. Many players also sit out their contracts and leave on frees.

Not to mention an older player that has performed to a fairly high standard throughout their career will see that retirement is getting close and they may well put in the 100% we want to win things and to enjoy the autumn of their career.
