Ex-Player Watch Player Watch: Mousa Dembele

I think Dembele still has a part to play in the team. He is still one of the best players in the league at keeping the ball and turning. I agree on what a few people have said in regards to his effectiveness off the bench and using his strengths in certain parts of the game. I don't see us moving him on considering who we need to get rid of first in the likes of Paulinho and Capoue.

So today we had some info about Dembele from JJ, saying that he's very unlikely to get sold and that he's not in Pochettino's bad books.

Seems like the reason he was dropped after some good performances last season was down to his lack of application in training.

Personally I think this is good news. I've been critical of Dembele in the past due to his inconsistent performances, however there was a brief run of games last season where he really raised his game and made a difference. I'll be happy to see him stay in the squad as he's capable of being an important player for us.

He's brilliant on his day and if used in the right position.

I'm not sure he's cut out to be a central midfielder in a 2 man midfield. He used to be very good defensively but seems to have lost that part of his game recently, and the time he takes on the ball sometimes can put us in tricky positions.

He's a better player than Mason on his day though, and if we use him in a more advanced role, even as one of the wide forwards, I think he'll continue to be a useful asset.

I liked him in the advanced role. His distribution isn't great, but his major strength is his ability to keep the ball and create space for himself. Even if his distribution is kept relatively simple it could be (and has been) very useful for allowing more attacking players the time to get into dangerous positions.

I'm not saying I expect him to be a permanent starter for us, but he offers something that none of our remaining midfielders can.

Yeah I've advocated pretty much the same thing. He needs to be played further up the pitch and I'd consider his role as a 'big game player', because what he is good at is that if you play the ball in to him it will stick and he can hold it under pressure. When you have games where you are up against it and need an out ball and to gain a foothold with possession is when he is useful.

Yep. In that respect he'd work well with Kane. We all saw how Kane would end up dropping deeper to try and hold up the ball (which he often did very well), however Kane's precisely the sort of player you'd want to be holding up the ball for.

Doesn't move the ball on quickly enough.
Doesn't score or assist enough goals.
Black Hole Dembele is not good enough now
if we are to make progress.
Effective as a late sub. when we need to slow the game down
and deny the opposition the ball.
Real Madrid can have him.
Latest ITK from JJ, is pretty sad, the guy is simply not good enough and he will be taking up a spot that would could give to youth player for example.

I agree, he can hold onto the ball, but IMO, professional footballers need to be able to do more than just hold onto the ball...

Yeah, we may look better with him in on the pitch, but that just shows how weak we really are in that position, if a player who can't release a ball improves us.

Terrible news.

I wouldn't, Dembele would starve Kane of service.

Although he doesn't score or assist much much of at all, Dembele still has skills and uses that pretty much no one else in our team has. He also never seems to kick up any fuss over being a squad player. I don't see the clamor for selling him, there are much worse culprits ahead of him on the chopping block. Also, he was crucial to our good run of form last winter

He's complained to the press a lot about playing time in the last couple years.

15 million pounds for an average, mediocre player with no drive or ambition to improve. While Hotlby, who had more drive and ambition in his little toe, than Dembele and the rest of the misfiring misfits put together, get's sold. Dembele gets to stay, why? He is a player that sums up the whole club, comfortable.
Not winning anything but not going to go down, potential that will never be realised.
Any player who isn't in the team and isn't just happy with collecting thousands of pounds a week until their contract runs out, should be upset and should be knocking on the manager's door and asking 'why am I not in team? What do I have to do to get back in the side?'

It's hard to know the real reasons from the outside looking in but on form alone I think he was harshly treated towards the end of the season.

I don't think he was dropped due to form though so must have been something behind the scenes as he was playing brilliantly prior to the West Ham game. As soon as Poch pushed him forward in that three behind Kane he was fantastic and played the best I've seen him in a Spurs shirt, more of that consistently next season and he'll play himself into the side.

Maybe, as it seems he won't be sold unless for high price, I assume MP and he have had discussions and MD has been told to up his training to improve his chances of game time. If that's the case I can only think MP wants him in the squad and is trying to motivate him.
