This type of thinking is seen often with fans and i'll hold my hands up, of course i'd have liked a new signing in the first week of January to help the team in these crucial matches. But the reality is that any new player is likely to come in on a 5 or 6 yr deal, so you really need to be looking at the bigger picture, not just an upcoming set of matches against some difficult opponents. The club need to get the right players in at the right prices, we know there isn't much wiggle room for mistakes.
I get that but we have identified him, the price isn’t going to come down dramatically but the upside of getting him in earlier and bedded in outweighs saving a bit on his price especially mid season, i am all for negotiating in the summer when no football is to be played but right now we have a crucial few weeks and if he is the man we want get him in.

yeah i get that, but i reckon it'd be 50/50 whether Conte would throw him straight in anyway had he arrived (for example) on Monday. Young player, new to league, 2 experienced and fit players in his position who are used to these big PL games, i'm honestly not sure we'd have started him.

Is some of the delay possibly due to the Chelsea principle. If a price is agreed, Chelsea could easily hijack the deal
like they have with Mudryk.

How much do you think the club are going to save negotiating? 3-5m either way if 37m is going to break the club then we aren’t anywhere near ready to sit at the big boys table and we should adjust accordingly.

37m is pretty much punt money these days we spent more on Dav 5 or 6 years ago.
apologies @IfiHadTheWings for picking your tweet out but just wanted to highlight reasons why we might be struggling with this.

£37m might be punt money when buying but it’s a hell of a lot compared to clubs taking a punt on players we want to sell.

The last 3 players we have managed to shift for over over €30m was Bergwijn, Walker and Bale.

It’s not just the consideration of will a player be a success but whether we are willing to shoulder the costs of a failure

It’s called negotiation. Every team does it. Even Chelsea who are chucking money around for fun walked away from the Fernandez deal because they weren’t prepared to pay the release clause.

They have just gone in over the top of Woolwich for Mudryk in a deal i think will be over one hundred million, and a seven year contract.

If they had truly wanted Fernandez he would be playing against Fulham today.

Don’t think Newcastle were ever in for Fernandez.

You miss the point. It's all about value.

Chelsea obviously value Mudryk at what they paid for him. They didn't value Fernandez at what Benfica demanded for him.

For us, maybe we don't value Porro what Sporting are demanding for him.

I'm sure there were reports they were offering over the release clause so they didn't need to pay it in one go.

They are spending about the same amount on a different player, but can now spread that over 7(?) years.

The guaranteed part will be paid over 3/4 years, no way would selling clubs spread the main payments over 7. The add ons will relate to the contract length.

It's the amortising of the whole "fee" which may never actually get paid over 7 years that relates to FFP.

I'm sure accountants on here can be more specific ?

We can’t afford to wait to sell to buy. We have to be ruthless with how atrocious we are right now. So a few guys earning 5M sit on the training ground. How about we actually sell the naming rights to the stadium to cover it. Who cares. Need massive upgrade in quality. We are wretched across the pitch.

The comparison is there as buying clubs try want to pay what they value the player at. Porro has only had one and half decent seasons in a comparatively poor league. Maybe we don’t think he is worth his release clause. The club always has the guard against over paying, because if we sign him and the next manager doesn’t rate him, we don’t want to take a big loss on him.

Consistently over paying for players while getting rid of dead wood at knock down prices is an awful way to run a business.
Seemed to work for that lot down the road

Watch us sign him and sell Emerson. But results continue to be bad so we sack conte.

The new manager doesn't play wing backs so now we need a proper RB.

And scene.

Would be a cock up if the next hypothetical manager didn't play wingbacks with prospects like Udogie & Porro at their disposal.

Walker and Rose weren't really full backs, but played in those positions well.

I don't think Perisic would work as a LB, but I think Porro and Udogie could

We should let the DOF set the style and desired formation in an ideal world, and find coaches who will work with that system. Won’t happen though.
