Drogba, Giroud, Cantona, Tevez, Van Persie.

Foreign strikers.

Shit in their 1st season.

It's true. The only thing I'd add is that, at 29 (next season), when most of the time a player is aproaching the 'twighlight' years of their career, at most we'll get a year or two of an 'in form' Soldado. I'd wager that 26m on 2 years is, or was, a bad decision. IMO.

Not really.

You might expect a player who relies on their pace to start to deteriorate quickly at 31+ but a player who relies on being quick thinking and clever in the box can keep playing effectively at the top level well beyond that and even will probably peak in their 30's. Soldado is one of these players.

Yes - You'd expect Soldado to have a similar career span to Sheringham in that respect seeing as he relies on his speed of thought more than his speed of foot

Sheringham won the PFA player and football writers player of the year aged 35

Of course it does. How can you be so ignorant to not think so? I do not disagree that Soldado can be doing better, but that's because I know enough about him to understand this. I also know why he's not playing as well as he should be. Something those who don't know about him pre-Spurs, don't grasp why. There are several reasons besides the generic, but truthful, new club, new country etc. We're not playing to his strengths at all.

Your last line stinks of ignorance though. I suggest you actually go back and watch him in Spain before you slag him off and make a verdict so early.

That's bollocks. We have to rate him based on what he does here. Morientes had a good record in Spain, it's a different kettle.

I know he's supposed to be able to cope, I know he has a good record, I know he plays for Spain, that's why we bought him for a record fee. But that doesn't mean he can and will do it here. I had my doubts in the beginning, just by watching the types of goals he scores.

I think we are playing to his strengths. We've been getting balls into the box, other players are scoring from open play but him and he's missing sitters.

It's funny when people criticsed Defoe for not being able to hold the ball up and bring others into play, yet give Soldado the benefit of us not playing to his strengths. What is playing to his strengths? Putting it on a plate for him? Lennon did that for him twice in the last couple of weeks.

I'm allowed to slag off his performances for Spurs without going back and watching 50 hours of Valencia from last year, thanks.

You are so incredibly ignorant, it's genuinely impressive.

I'm fine with you judging his current performances, but to simply outright write him off and call him shit and the like based on his first 6 months here is quite simply absurd. Borderline embarrassing.

Fuck are we playing to his strengths. A lot of the chances he's had are those that he made himself (the one vs United comes to mind). No doubting he should have scored the chances against Saints and Stoke though. That's what being out of form does to you though. Soldado's record in Spain was patchy at times, then he'd burst to life with 10 goals in 8 games. This is why I have faith.

He's only just started to really look settled, Ade's influence has taken the load off of him, the problem being for us, is that he's started in that bad run of form. He'll be fine, he's too good a footballer not to.

Defoe's link up play cannot match Soldado's. Have you seen Soldado recently? Playing wonderful, wonderful reverse passes, through balls etc. He does that EVERY game, but it doesn't get appreciated. This is something he's actually learnt whilst in the country, so credit to him for that. Takes some skill to adapt your game that much and improve it significantly at his age.

Just because opinions differ to yours doesn't make it any less valid!

He will I am sure be afforded time by Spurs and let's hope he proves himself in a Spurs shirt.

I'm fine with opinions, but if I believe it's wrong, or slightly misguided, I'll say why I think so. Which is what I've done. I don't think I've been unreasonable. This is merely a case of someone knowing Soldado better than someone else, and thus looking at Soldado's from a more open minded point of view. You can write off Soldado as much as you want, but I will laugh. Because I've seen enough of the man to know his quality.

Not sure if it has been mentioned earlier in the thread but Valencia are apparently close to being sold to a billionaire who is going to make some big signings.

What would people think if we got our money back, sell or keep ?

I can't help thinking he would be much happier on a personal level, in Valencia, and playing for Valencia..

Nah. I reckon he's loving it here. You can see how happy he is every time he kicks the shit out of 1 of our advertising boards during a game.

Confidence confidence is all it is... He is getting in the right places at the right time... But just not finishing them... It will come Suarez/Henry/RVP all took time to settle in and I am confident he will too... Not sure he will go on to be as good as any of these but here is to hoping!

I remember reading an interesting article in the Sunday times at the start of the season comparing the careers of rs and negredo and how remarkably similar their stats were and how the competition was so hot for the world cup. Unfortunately our man has fallen way behind. I really hope he does well but from what i have seen so far I can't quite see it working out.

Likewise, really couldn't see what all the fuss was about. He's a Defoe type of goal scorer though without the occasional Defoe whack from an improbable angle. The only upgrade on Defoe is his holdup play and the ability to put a nice through ball in. Those two things have basically stopped him being absolutely slaughterer by all and sundry this season.

He definately has to start showing us more. Currently Ade is STILL our best striker BY A MILE and its looking like £26m badly spent. We'd have been better offering Swansea £26m for Michu, his injury aside
