What a shame, would like to have seen him end his career at Spurs, But everyone has to believe fully and be committed to the team and the club. Probably the strongest warning that could be given to the rest of the squad.

Don’t care how one spins it, loosing Walker and a Toby in two consecutive seasons is awful business for a team trying to compete against the elite. We will be worse of without him. Such a shame.

Walker I sort of agree, though without him we are having an overall better season than we did with him so clearly we can’t have been THAT badly affected.

But losing Toby, when he’s not played barring two cup matches v lower league opposition in the past six months, will at this stage be as big a blow as losing any back up player. It is clear now that for whatever reason very and Sanchez are first choice, while Foyth is rated highly and Dier is trusted at the back, so any dependable centre back will do in Toby’s place.

He's a silly boy.

Yes, it was always likely that he could do better than us, and at his age everyone expected he would be with us short term to be off at some point in order to have a push at winning things.

But to mess Poch around in the season before a World Cup?

Silly boy.

He doesn't really want the big money, he wants to go, but he'd have been much better off keeping his mouth shut and his powder dry this season and playing every week, having a great World Cup to put himself in the thoughts of the biggest clubs and telling us he wanted to go in the summer.

There's a way to play the game and Toby's chosen the wrong way.

He's obviously been totally ostracised like Walker was and is now regretting it as he's completely frozen out of all football, and can no doubt feel it on the training ground as well. I bet his actions haven't gone down that brilliantly with some of the more committed players, either.

BTW, I don't believe a single word Poch said in his press conference. We all know how he operates, as does the press and people in the game. He even explicitly told us when he described the Walker situation in his book.

A sad and unnecessary situation. But we move on - he must be sold outside the PL.

Yup pretty much.

Poch is brutal, however walker did play and made bench when didn’t. So as has been said and from what we’ve seen in 3 games maybe Toby has really lost a yard from this injury. It’s a shame Belgium didn’t have a tough game and we could have really had a good look at him. The Brighton game will be interesting, in normal circumstances definitely a chance to rest Sanchez or vertonghen before the Semi.

I get people saying we haven’t missed Toby or Rose either since both have been dropped / injured when you look at our league form but the guys that are upset and I am in that camp too view keeping these type of players as important if we want to move on beyond fighting for top 4 and winning things - both on form are world class players - clearly if we’ll replaced then a different matter but for me the debate isn’t how well we’ve done without hem but about improving further as a team and squad from here with a pretty big loss quality wise to address when both exit

The unfortunate reality is that we're swimming in the deep end with some big sharks. If they want something we've got they offer wages we simply can't match. Walker said he wanted to move back to the North, but he wouldn't have gone to Huddersfield on 10k per week. Toby wants massive money to stay with us and the knock on effect of that could be catastrophic. It may seem like awful business but we're between a rock and a hard place when players get greedy and plastic clubs come knocking.

We have missed Toby, not to the extent everyone thought we would but some small margins have mattered I am convinced of that. Wearing my positive hat with this year under his belt Sanchez will be even better next year.

Of course keeping these kinds of players is important, and if they're on form they are both at the top of their profession in their given positions, but regardless of replacing them, we'e effectively been without Rose for a year, and Toby for 6 months and we haven't missed them. Davies has been great, and even a fully fit, top-form Rose would have a real fight to get his starting spot back. And Sanchez has been better this year than anyone imagined, and has meant we haven't missed Toby. Of course it would be best to keep your best players, but if they don't want to be here, or are causing problems behind the scenes, or crossing the management then they need to go. No player is bigger than that.

This is it, in a nutshell.

The worry I have is we are letting Toby go and Jan only has a year left. I can only presume that with a young family, Jan is happy to stay put. I think Toby does not have any kids and therefore is happier to move.

Losing Walker wasn't too bad but losing Toby is a big blow. He's a monster defender and anywhere he has gone has made the defence the top 2 in the league every time. When he joined us we had the 5th worst defence in the league and all of a sudden we are the best. He was the best centre back in the league for a few seasons.

I really hope he has a season at the new stadium. Toby really made me appreciate defending when I never really took any notice.

Fair but our defence also improved because we started to defend as a unit better, wasnt all down to Toby.

I think this is also a lot down to the players getting used to each other and playing how the manager wants. The longer they’ve been together as a unit the better we have become. Obviously talent comes into it too.

It's no coincidence that bringing in a specified DM (Dier moved there in preseason) to the system also occurred at the same time our defensive record improved...

Not sure why we're so adamant on closing the door here, he's a world class cb and could make a significant difference to our run in. Get him NB the squad and tell him he's Spurs and he needs to remember that. If Leicester can play hard ball with Mahrez and get him playing to their tune, I don't see why we can't.

Lesta had Mahrez on a long contract, we effectively only have one year left and Toby goes half price.

Still think if they are willing to come back and negotiate then we should try

Yeah, that's fair, although in that case just cut a deal whereby we give him his move if he gives us 100% until the end of the season. Just seems like there must be more options to explore that we can benefit from.

This is the reason why (imo) Poch wouldn't fit in at Real Madrid. He doesn't take any shit from any supposed super-stars.

when does his contract expire? Im curious as to what we can expect to get for him this summer. I think he's our best centerback but it appears he wants more than we will pay.

It expires next summer but we can extend by a year. If we do that there’s a two week window that he can leave if someone bids £25m

Shame what's happened with Toby as I've really liked him as a player and you never know he still might be next season.

One good thing coming out of this is how it will look to other players who might think they are indisposable, if Poch dosnt think your better than the players in front of you or if you are threatening to leave unless you get what you want we will carry on without you just like we did with Walker.

If we were losing it would get on my nerves but the tactic seems to be working
