I can see why we’re intent on getting rid now if he’s refusing to sign. Poch wants to build a team and if he knows Toby is going next summer then he can’t build. I don’t think it’s really about the cut price of £25m.

If we get rid this summer then it’s on our terms and we can choose (to an extent) where he goes - which is hopefully abroad.

There’s always an outside chance that, given his lack of game time, no club is willing to pay what we’re asking. In which case he may just commit to us rather than be frozen out for another season.

Wouldn't a new contract make the clause nul and void?
Toby will be desperate to play so he can’t make the WC, and Martinez probably didn’t do him any favours by stating that he was fit to play.

Yeah if he signs the new contract, the clause will be gone for sure.

ali z: All i heard was his dad was chasing big bucks ...PSG likely, situation is not unreasonable but a lot of humble pie needs to be eaten by Toby and advisors, it's about showing the squad that no player is bigger than the team.

edit: ali z: His dad wants over 200k a week, when initally we thought we had a deal at 130k.

No way is he worth over 200k a week as he has hardly played this last couple of seasons and is not the best player in the squad. I don’t think he is a bad egg though just being advised wrong.

Question Toby needs to ask himself is, who in their right mind will pay him the salary he is asking for at present in summer 2019 at the age of 30, when he’s barely played in 2 seasons and maybe even failed to play at the previous World Cup. They’d at best pay him what we are currently offering.

However, if he signs now for three seasons, he gets an extra year at that kind of salary, plays regularly again this season and saves his World Cup spot, and if he’s as good as he thinks he is then a club who can afford to make an offer we can’t refuse will do so this summer anyway after a stellar World Cup.

I'd be quite happy to see Alderweireld leave. He'd bring in a ton of cash in a transfer fee and save a bunch of money on wages. We could use that to bring in a player like De Ligt. And have money left over to help in other player acquisitions.

Unless we go with three at the back and two wing-backs then Sanchez would be the likely one to suffer in terms of game time. And Sanchez has proven that he can more than handle the job as the right-centre back. In fact, I'd rather have Sanchez playing instead of Alderweireld. So why do we need to even consider keeping Alderweireld at this point?

Quite happy for him to go for PSG for a few quid in return.

I'm sure Levy will get them to throw another player into the mix too. PSG have a big squad (including Jese on loan at Stoke and Krychowiak at West Brom unbelievably) and FFP to adhere too. Goncalo Guedes?

There’s this bit as well from Ali:

Think that might be why the played that tactic, they know we are looking to give significant increases to all our first team squad over the next 6 months, as it stands I think he will be at PSG next year, Rose could still go but expect Dembele to get a new deal.

A very poor decision on his/their part then. If media reports are to be believed (the story and the numbers must have come from somewhere), we'll be putting Kane on £200k p/w in the summer. You'd think that he would be out on his own at the top but then the next level of players (of which you'd think Toby would have been one, along with maybe Hugo, Jan, Eric and Christian. Dele too?) aren't going to be a million miles behind that (maybe £150k p/w average?).

brilliant news on Dembele

Rose is a funny one - don't care to be honest but surprised if Utd go in for him

I don't see how signing a new contract with us NOW will give him the game time to save his WC?
It may get back on our bench, but signing a new contract won't get him back in our first 11 , Sanchez and Jan have nailed their positions, i think Toby has left it too late to get himself back into our team and his WC may be affected.

What i like what we have done, which i must add has been helped by our great run and Sanchez/Jan's form, is to show players and send out a clear message that if they are being unreasonable they will be frozen out and their immediate careers will be affected.....no one is or should be bigger then our club and however great Toby has been for us , we have been for him too and i don't think he is worth the money he is demanding seeing as he will find it hard to even make the first team.
