Would be so huge Toby stayed. Would also mean concentrating on the areas of the squad that need upgrading. Don't wanna spend all summer trying to replace Toby and Eriksen.

I'd be surprised if the club let him set out the final year of his contract. I think there's only two possible outcomes: we sell him this summer or he signs a new contract.

If we don't get £25m then I think the club would rather he see out the last year than sell him for anything less. With the money coming in at the moment, £25m won't make a huge difference - means we don't have to worry about CB this summer and get another year out of him on relatively small wages. His value to us for a season is worth more than £25m imo

Agree.. Rather keep Toby another year, than take the 25m. It's nothing in todays market.

Sanchez is not ready to step up yet either.

Oh dear, here we go again.

He's not ready to step up, despite playing 31 PL games last season (41 in total) and being a mainstay in the 3rd best defence in the entire league, in the team that finished 3rd at the end of the season.

Yep, you're spot on.

I don't think he is. I would like another season like this one for Sanchez, where he will get his games.

He's had 2 seasons now, and still not convinced me yet to be a starter. He has had a pretty poor season to be fair.

To many mistakes, rushed tackles and still needs a lot of work with the ball and needs to be more calm. Toby & Jan are still better.

Disagree all you want, my opinion.

And we did finish 4th btw.

Wolves and Everton are close to us in goals conceded and Liverpool & City is still 20 goals ahead of us. Make of that what you will.

I think he meant last season ... this season isn’t over

Yep, for 2017/18 season he was first choice alongside Vertonghen for pretty much the whole season.

If that's not stepping up not sure what is.

It's not that Sanchez is not good enough.. Give him constant game time and he will deliver, like he did the season before the one past.

Toby is just a superior defender. I'd gladly take him leaving on a free if he contributes like he did this season. ... Hell we may even convince him to renew and retire here. Can on only dream and hope.

People forget that Davinson is still a kid really. The lads 22 and he's still learning the game. Toby is clearly the more superior of them both but how good was Toby at 22 compared to Davinson? Tough one to answer I know but the guy needs to be given time

That's even more weird then

No, we finished 3rd. I did clearly state "last season"

It's even more weird to refer to the only season where he was given a prolonged run in a settled defence, with a settled midfield in front of him?

Yet you've used this injury ravaged season, full of nothing but chopping & changing of personnel in both defence & midfield, as a barometer of judgement for his ability.

Seems reasonable.

"I'm going to say the same thing that I've been saying for the past couple of years,” Alderweireld said when asked about his future.

“The only focus is Spurs, because of this focus I think I had a good season as well. I have one year left on my contract, so in my head, I will play for Spurs next season."

https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/fo...-a-tottenham-player-next-season-a4152511.html

How does one read this? Is he going to sign a new contract.....or is he running his contract down?

To be honest I’d be fine if he stayed for another, gave his all and left on a free contract next year.

We’re only going to get £25million anyway and Toby AND Eriksen leaving feels like too much of a seismic shift for our starting 11 in one window.

The choice if we keep him or not is up to him. If a club activates his clause we don't have any power anyway.

Very good point.

If that is the case, he is probably as good as gone. 25mio is nothing for a defender of his quality.

As much as I would detest it, Man U or possibly Arsenal should snap him up at that price.

Unfortunately, it appears we can't do anything about it if they activate his release clause.

I'm hoping Bayern or PSG come in for him..

Its not, but depending on his wage demands it could be.

That £25m equates to just under £100k a week for 5 years. He would probably sign somewhere for 3 or 4 years so its a large chunk of his entire contract.

If he stays here for another year he could command £200k a week for 3 years - not much more than £25m

Not sure what point i am trying to make but I'm going to post anyway

Think I'm trying to say I hope he stays this year and rides off to Italy on a nice big contract to see him out.

He is worth every cent that we paid for him. As you say he's still very young. Continuous rotation through out in the season coming is what I would like to see.

Talk of Ramos going to China so keep an eye on Madrid coming in for him. £25m for a top drawer centre half makes sense for them.

Make no mistake, if we get an offer for him he’s gone, just look how quick we shifted Dembele for £10m.
Such a shame...
