didn't he score most of his 27 last season after January?

he can't score if he isn't getting goal scoring opportunities, and from what I did see yesterday he wasn't able to receive the ball in a position to be able to create space, due to the way WBA set up. he held the ball up well and brought others into play.

we need to be patient with the lad, start getting on his back, and that 1st goal from open play will take even longer to come.

I really enjoy watching him, v good player but needs to score of course. If he gets 27 goals from this January i will be very happy with him!

I am trolling a bit, I think he is doing ok and his hold up play is decent. But he does need to do a lot better. Timing runs like that is a pretty basic aspect of the game he is getting wrong.
Timing runs is down to building relationships with team-mates though. Maybe he's used to getting the ball earlier. I've got no idea whether AZ were a more direct team, but maybe he got it quicker than we usually play it forward.

I think he's been judged unfairly a bit, he wouldn't be in the team this much had Kane not been injured. He's clearly still not fit and he's still learning from his team mates so we should reserve judgement a little...not that anyone on here will.

I thought his play with back to goal was excellent saturday he worked tirelesly for the team, just needs a goal or two to settle but it will come.

Is it him going too early or we don't move the ball as quickly as he is used to. Certainly a great hold up player, very strong and sees his team mates movement's.
Given time to settle I think he'll be a star.

I've been thinking about this as well.

I've got no idea how AZ played last season, but I imagine that his position would be one of the hardest in which to adjust to a new manager, a new philosophy and a new style.

To be fair to the lad he would have had a least 4/5 assists to his name this season if the chances he set up had been put away, mainly Kane and also Alli on the weekend. He's a very strong lad and I have no doubt that the goals will soon come, just needs to get in the box more I noticed he was on the wing at one point towards the end of the game against west brom!

I think it's been said before but he reminds me very much of Viduka.

Think he needs to get himself in the box more and be more selfish. Which is ironic really as Kane has been critised for being too selfish in the past.

I think you are forgetting how good a player Viduka was in his prime. Janssen nowhere near that level so far, Viduka could turn on a sixpence.

he's just 22 and just left the Dutch league, which is decidedly inferior to the prem. he's already doing what he can to help and needs a little time to figure the rest out.

its funny because most people fell over themselves to excuse Soldado, who should have been much more polished when he arrived than Janssen.

and I agree with those who have said better fitness will fix some of this - and better fitness is an easy fix.

I get that he has been helping the team- he has. The problem is that he doesn't even look close to scoring- I mean literally fucking miles away. As a scorer he just looks so- well- awkward- like he doesn't even know how to score. With Soldado it was different; his problem was that he regularly got himself into perfect scoring positions and fully looked like he knew how to score and yet time after time after time after time he somehow...didn't. It was surreal. With VJ, otoh, it's like he's a CB playing as a Striker for the first time...

Someone earlier compared him to Pav but I don't see it. With Pav, you could see he was a Striker- the only problem was that there was absolutely nothing- nothing- else he could do. So if he wasn't scoring it was like playing with ten men. With Janssen it's the opposite; so far he does everything well but score. It's not as if he handicaps us; indeed, he adds to our play- it's just that it feels like we're playing a 4-6.

Anyway, I like the guy a lot and I know full well he needs to be given time. And I don't even think he needs a goal; rather, he needs to just come close to scoring-- to give us a glimpse of the actual striker within.

(**For my Yank brethren: thus far Janssen reminds me of Bill Wennington- the Center on a couple of those great Bulls teams of the 90s, a guy who was great playing with his back to the basket, who did the job defensively and who dished the rock to Michael and Scottie just fine- but who couldn't throw the ball in the ocean if he was standing on the beach**)

Those saying that he needs to time his runs better are correct to a certain degree but I'm not sure it would make that much difference as he is so slow that defenders will be very confident of getting back to make a tackle.

Two goals will settle his nerves, as well as the team's nerves.. That's how the team now trust Son, Lamela, Alli etc to be the guys who can make the difference now.. Before that, it will always be kinda hesitant to pass to these players, and that is what I am seeing now to Janssen.. It is even more so because there is only one position of a forward on the field for us and his primary goal is basically to win games by scoring..
