Philosopher Mauricio Pochettino putting hit point across at Tottenham

MAURICIO POCHETTINO insists he is ready to be judged, even though he has only just started bedding his philosophy in at Tottenham.

Only a fortnight ago, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal warned fans it would take three months for the changes he is making at Old Trafford to take effect.

But Pochettino knows that White Hart Lane is no place for excuses, and he is not expecting any leeway for a settling-in period.

"I don't know how long it will take for the new philosophy to bed in," he said. "I don't put any time on it. We need to improve every day. This is our objective. On top of that we need to get results.

"I don't demand time. It's only to work hard every day, to build and improve every player in the squad.

"Always in football, the result manages your career and the decisions, because we need to win. This is our job, not only to provide your philosophy to the team and your style. You need to win, this is the first objective.

"My focus is the first game on Saturday. This is true. We understand that football is in the present. It is difficult to take time. Before that we need to improve and learn quickly for sure."

It will be music to the ears of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, a man not renowned for his patience where managers are concerned. Pochettino, though, insists Levy's reputation does not bother him.

"I do not worry about that," he said. "I know the business in football. I know that you live by the result, you need to get results. If not, you put yourself in difficulties.

"But the club and the chairman do not put any pressure on me or any challenges for me to achieve something. We have a very good relationship. Every day we talk together, with Franco Baldini and the chairman and with all the board and people here and try to do the best to help the club and for our supporters to enjoy every game.

"Pressure is not from outside, from the media or supporters, it's my pressure. Our philosophy and style is to win every game. We want to win. And that puts us under pressure. But I don't feel pressure from outside."

Pochettino was amused when he first took over at Southampton in January 2013 that, after a playing career that included 20 caps for Argentina, he was considered an unknown.

"I never read, as my English was very poor - which was good for me - whether I was popular or not popular!" he recalled. "As far as I could tell, the media just seemed to receive me like, 'Who is Pochettino?'

"But a year and a half later, I am here. I don't need to prove myself again.

"I think when you are a manager, in Espanyol, Southampton or now Tottenham, the responsibility is always the same. The responsibility, as a manager or head coach, is the same in all countries and all teams.

"It's true that this is a big club, with more repercussions, and we put pressure on ourselves, this is the same in all teams. But I don't feel this pressure."

Pochettino's first chance to impress will come tomorrow at West Ham, when a late assessment will decide whether Jan Vertonghen has recovered sufficiently from his World Cup exertions to start.

And he could have one or two surprises up his sleeve. When asked whether he was likely to begin the season with Emmanuel Adebayor or Roberto Soldado, his response was instant.

"Both," he said. "Maybe," he added with a wry smile.

"In Southampton we did it with Ricky Lambert and Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana and we are flexible. Sometimes we play with two strikers and sometimes with one striker in the same game. But we always play with the same philosophy.

"We need to be protagonists and always press high, work hard and be a dynamic team."

Spurs have also announced that striker Harry Kane has signed a new five-year deal at White Hart Lane.

The 21-year-old has long been considered as a hot prospect at the north London club and enjoyed a run in the side under former head coach Tim Sherwood last season.

Kane, who has also spent time on loan at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester, scored in three consecutive Barclays Premier League games in April and will provide competition to Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor as Pochettino looks to hit the ground running with victory over West Ham on Saturday.

Still talking a very good game. All sounds very encoraging. Nearly time to start walking the walk. Interesting what he said about strikers as I could easily see 1 of Soldado or Ade in the 3 behind the other with them switching throughout the game.

Could we possibly play Ade on the left switching around with Soldado, Eriksen and Lamela?

I like the way Pochettino portrays himself. Very confident in what his philosophy is and what he wants from the players but without the arrogance that AvB and Sherwood used to have.

Obviously this may change as his English improves or his success increases but at the moment I don't think the media or rival fans can take a swipe at him as they do at people like Mourinho, etc

He naturally drifts wide sometimes but on paper it would make sense to stick him up as the target man. If he peels left it leaves space for Eriksen and Soldado to move into in the centre. I see no reason why those could not be a fluid 4 up top.

I'd line up like this:

Ade

Eriksen ---- Soldado ---- Lamela

Wise move because if the past (both clubs and SC) is anything to go by he isn't going to get it :D

Did the same when Bale was with us.

He doesn't shy away from responsibility, does he? He stresses that he knows what he has to do, win games he says! It is also interesting that he says that he speaks to DL and FB everyday. I felt that he is saying things to generate positivity among the players, whilst at the same time he is sending a subtle message to them that they have to work relentlessly hard.
Well, onto his baptism of fire tomorrow. I wish him luck, for his own sake and even more so, for us!

There will probably be some throwing their toys out before half-time.

I think he'll do well even if it doesn't all tick straight away. Just heard Brad Friedel on Talkshite really complimenting him (particularly on the calm clear manner he gets his ideas across), the quality of the squad and the team spirit. He didn't even hesitate when he said he thinks we'll get top 4, seems like Poch has instilled a lot of belief already.

Soldado has shown some superb touches as a playmaker; suprisingly as he didnt have that reputation previously but he was great in the pre season games.

Yep, was just saying the same thing on another thread. If he, Lamela and Eirkson can form a bond and gel in their play, I think we could be back to seeing more of the flagrant, outright filthy, joyously depraved, footballing sex that we saw when Keane and Berbatov were a partnership.

On reflection, that description does read a little overtly sexually aggressive.

To each his own Good Doctor M, Flashspur has been known to get up to the odd bouts of rumpy pumpy in his day with assorted leather, vinyl, dungeon kit and other utensils at hand. I full understand the sentiment (y)

oh, you were talking about football...bugger :sour:

What a breath of fresh air this guy is. Can't wait for things to get started now and so desperate for him to be a success.

I believe Soldado would be the one to play on the left if it came to playing both him and Ade.

Only issue with that would possibly be that the left is where Ade likes to drift out to. they've spend large periods, standing beside each other, practically holding hands, playing in each other's patches o_O

We're talking about sex right?

Enjoyed your analysis of the pre-season games Luke. Just wonder what you think about our new system vs 3-5-2 which a few teams are likely to play this season. Strikes me that 3-5-2 might be like kryptonite to our system if it works the way you described in your analysis. Outnumbered in the centre of the park, unable to pull their CB's out of position, 2 strikers up against our split CB's and 2 WB's bombing up and down against our pushed up full backs?
