At the moment, Dawson is our team captain, so it would be very hard to drop him for a new player from the outset.

Now, if Dawson was to have the captaincy removed (and that would be a massive blow to him on a personal level), who do you feel should be given the job?

So we're going to spend close to 20 million on a defender and then play Dawson instead so we don't hurt his feelings?

Dawson is our captain and has been at the club giving 100% of his efforts week in week out for the best part of ten years. I was only suggesting that we don't start treating him as if he was the main culprit in our poor defence last season, we all know who that was. As our captain I believe he's earned a good deal of respect from the club.

For me, Dawson's best years were playing alongside the great Ledley King. I used to call them our 'Twin Towers'. They were superb together and he learned a heck of a lot from him.

Since Ledley retired, Dawson has had to play with a different defensive partner almost on a weekly basis. Kaboul, Vertonghen, Capoue, Fryers, Chiriches... and it's very hard to establish any continuity in that situation.

When this new guy arrives (please God) I hope he'll be able to establish a strong partnership between them both.

Vertonghen may be a good centre back, but for me, on the evidence of last season's events, he lacks real heart, which is a major flaw in his gameplay. It's only my opinion for what it's worth, but I hope our first choice central defensive partnership consists of Dawson and Mutacchio, with Vertonghen and the others as back ups. It's all about choosing your best options.

Sorry but the idea that Dawson should start in place of Vertonghen is pure madness.

If anything surely he would partner Verts? If we do sign MM I wouldn't expect him to be thrown in immediately, considering our first match is just over a week away. Poch doesn't seem like the kind of manager to rush things.

Aside from Leds the most successful partnership he forged was with Bassong, when they had that long run together when we finished fourth, giving them a chance to build an understanding.

Holtby has done very well preseason. 2 goals and couple of assists.
Cant see him being dropped personally.
1st eleven is going to be interesting.

I'd run with:

Lloris
Walker-Kaboul-Vertonghen-Davies
Capoue-Holtby
Lamela-Eriksen-Chadli
Soldado

Even if we get Musacchio in time I wouldn't throw him in at the deep end.

Yup I'd be surprised not to see Holtby in the starting lineup, although I'm not quite sure whereabouts. You'd imagine he'd be in the more advanced role, but if we play him, Lamela and Eriksen that seems a bit narrow and also leaves a place in midfield open.

Basically it's very hard to know what the team will be without knowing how fit all of the World Cup players are.

Hopefully Poch can basically put out his West Ham team in the first half against Schalke.

Not a bad shout. That was a fantastic 'one off' season, of course, we all know Ledders had his issues with injuries and spent long periods out of the team in his last years, but I maintain that Dawson learned his craft when he first arrived by playing alongside one of the truly great defenders in football history, Ledley King.

Lloris
Walker - MM- Verts - Davies
Capoue - Bentaleb
Lamela - Eriksen - Chadli
Soldado

Meaning we are a little bloated with midfielders that dont really "fit in" in the likes of Paulinho and Dembele, so would be extremely happy if we managed to shift atleast 1 (possibly 2) and replace them with Scheiderlein so he could start ahead of Nabil as the season progress.

I've got a feeling he will go with mainly players who have been in a lot of pre-season games as he has had more time working with them and seeing them play.

I think more of the players that were injured or were at the World Cup would be introduced a little later or come on as subs.

Anyway my guess is a 4-2-3-1 formation with the following players (baring injury):

GK - Lloris
LB - Davis
CB - Vertonghen
CB - Kaboul
RB - Walker
CM - Capoue
CM - Holtby
AM - Lennon
AM - Eriksen
AM - Lamela
FW - Soldado

Subs
Vorm
Naughton
Dawson
Sandro
Townsend
Kane
Adebayor

Sorry but the idea that Dawson should start in place of Vertonghen is pure madness.

Does seem odd but is Vertonghen fit enough to play? I think I remember reading a little while back (around the time of the crowd surfing stuff) he mentioned in an interview to someone that he had a minor injury and the club didn't want to rush him back into training or something.

I can`t see any players signed now being ready to play against West Ham so from out current squad I would like to see us strong and solid for the first game with some quality up front..

Lloris

Kabul Verts

Walker Davies
Sandro Capoue

Lennon Eriksen
Lamela

Adebayor

Okay that was the last test.

I assume the 15 guys who played at least a half have a place in the squad:

Lloris, Naughton, Dier, Kaboul, Rose, Davies, Holtby, Bentaleb, Eriksen, Lamela, Lennon, Townsend, Adebayor, Kane, Soldado.

In addition to that there will be one more centre back. That should be Vertonghen but if not ready Musacchio if signed until Saturday or Fryers/ Vejlkovic.
The other empty spot is clearly a CM. Hopefully and most likely Capoue, assuming he will be fit. If not there is Sandro and funnily Dembele, Paulinho, Mason and Carroll sitting there and wait.

Last spot...obvious...goalkeeper. Friedel or Vorm.

So i think Pochs eleven will be:

----------------Lloris--------------------
Naughton--Kabs-----Dier/Verty---Rose---
-----------Capoue--Bentaleb-------------
----Holtby-----Lamela--------Lennon-----
-------------Adebayor-------------------

With solid options from the bench like Townsend, Soldado, Kane and even Eriksen.

Immediate reaction (and this is assuming that none of the WC returnees will start)

----------------Lloris---------------
Naughton---Kaboul---Dier---Rose
-----------Capoue--Bentaleb------
---Lamela-----Eriksen-------Lennon
-------------Adebayor----------

I think Lamela needs to play on the right, Eriksen behind the striker..

If Capoue isn't fit I'd give the start to Holtby.

Who I want:

Lloris

Walker Musacchio Vertonghen Davies

Capoue Schneiderlin

Holtby Lamela Eriksen

Soldado

Who I think we will see:

Lloris

Naughton Kaboul Vertonghen Rose

Capoue Dembele Bentaleb

Eriksen Lamela Lennon

Soldado Adebayor

If Naughton is sold - not sure who plays there, if Walker is not fit - I am hoping Walker is fit.

I have a funny feeling about the Rose/Davies situation that we see more of Rose that we expect - I expect the starting back line to start against Schalke

Really have no clue who will partner with Capoue, should have a better idea after the Schalke match, could see Dembele, Paulinho, or Bentaleb in this role, I'd guess Sandro is behind Capoue at the moment.

Holtby is doing everything he can to earn a start, but can't shake the feeling that Lennon gets the nod - though Lennon, and his pace, probably makes for a better sub.

When healthy, Ade is probably as likely to start as Soldado, but that may take a few more weeks.
