Are we really as bad as we think we are?

The general consensus is that Spurs are currently in the mire, 7th in the league, having to settle for a 3rd rate European competition, and struggling to appoint a manager has sent some over the edge!

However , only 2 teams scored more than us last season and only 5 teams conceded less, we dropped a ridiculous amount of points from winning positions, but by the same token we also got into those winning positions.

But for a bit more rub of the green, top 4 and a trophy was well within our grasp this season.

I believe with a shake up of the squad in the summer,

Outs(Aurier, Doherty, Dier, Winks, Sissoko, Lamela, Lucas, Davies)

Ins (from loan; Skipp, Sessegnon, Aarons/Lamptey Top CB, Ings/Dybala, Olise, Sabitzer and resigning Bale on loan)

Introduce the likes of Parrott, Scarlett and Devine in the Conference League, we could be looking at a profitable window with a younger and hungrier squad.

I would go with a smaller squad with more youngsters on the bench this campaign and play a consistent 14/15 players in the league (giving more vital minutes to Tanganga, Rodon, Sessegnon, Skipp etc) and blood the academy players in the cups , and hopefully we can finish top 4 again or close to.

This will put us in a great position over the next couple of years for the squad to blossom, similar to early Poch reign where he played Bentaleb/Mason/Eriksen/Kane/ Townsend/Walker/Rose/Dier all who were fairly young.

I hope we get Poch back this season but if it isn't possible right now we should go for someone like Parker/Potter/Ten Hag knowing that if it doesn't quite go to plan we can try again for Poch in the next season or two when his contract is close to expiring/expired.

Of course i want to win something, we have gotten close so often , we aren't miles off anyway and i think having fearless youngsters that haven't tasted constant failure over the last 5 or 6 years in finals/ semi finals is the way to go plus I've always resonated more with this club when we have signed young stars, the likes of Lennon, Rose, Dawson, Huddlestone, Walker, Alli, Naughton, rather than making the big name £40m-£50m signings, so im hopeful that we can go back to that route and I can fall in love with my club again.

Anyway, is it possible we could be back in the mix next season with a good summer of recruitment or do you think it will get worse and we are as bad as we think we are?

We lost so many points by the odd goal this year, silly mistakes let us down time and again, but we still scored bags of goals, and despite letting in silly goals that cost us points, actually conceded very few goals.

Such a bizarre and disappointing season.

Genuinely think we are a lot better than people give us credit for.

It all hinges on the future of Kane. If he leaves we are in big trouble. Our history of big money striker signings is patchy at best.

I have no doubts our team was horribly mis-managed in the second half of last season. A par performance would have had us in the CL IMHO.

The problem is we had Kane and Son putting up insane numbers just to finish 7th. Take one or both out and we are putting it all in the hands of the transfer committee.

No, its the same when Poch took over, squad was a mess but 2 or 3 signings change that. Poch inherited a squad with:
Lloris
Walker
Rose
Vertonghen
Dembele
Eriksen
Lamela
Kane(just scored 3 goals in 6 games)

These players were a mixture of certified top players(walker and Dembele), Needing development(like Rose) and Raw(like Kane)

Right now we have the makings of a top team under the right management:
Lloris
Reguillon (needs developing)
Hojberg
Lo Celso
Ndombele
Son
Kane(maybe)

The problem is the CBs are shit and needs improvement as the spine is brittle and bring everyone down

This is it for me. If we keep Kane and Son and Bale extends for a year then we have a fantastic front 3 as long as the new manager has the courage to play them.

Holjbjerg showed good potential in the first half of the season and who knows if Ndombele or Lo Celso can step up a level.

One or two solid signings and a few players stepping up and we can compete for top 4 again.

Yes we very much are. Outside of Kane & Son we are kinda fucked. One or both go down or we sell, we’ve got nothing

If he does come in, Paratici will have a massive job on his hands. The utterly shambolic manager search will have done absolutely nothing to dissuade Kane from wanting out. And without Kane, we are thoroughly mediocre. The squad will need refreshing at nearly every position.

The good news is that if we do sell Kane, we’ll be able to get shot of the deadwood at low prices without depriving ourselves of the funds necessary to bring players in. There will be an opportunity for a fresh start with a new generation of players, but we cannot afford to fail in the manner that we routinely have done in transfer windows going back roughly half a decade now.

Paratici must be given the autonomy to select the transfer targets and the backing to actually close the purchases, even if Levy thinks the new striker should cost fifty pence less than Paratici manages to negotiate. Levy has shown little to no capacity to learn any lessons from his long list of disastrous transfer decisions, so I’m personally very pessimistic.

We have a control freak running the club, and unless he gets out of the way and allows the football people do their jobs I see no reason to believe that we will successfully replace Kane and the myriad other players who should be on their way out. If the new DoF structure is allowed to function without Levy’s overbearing interference, we will have an opportunity to put together an intriguing new project. If not, we’ll likely be even worse than we were in the farcical season just finished.

No. We have just come off the back of a dreadful season with a dreadful manager and dreadful tactics, after two years of pandemic hell. The pandemic has been absolute wank, but I am sure that once we get a new manager there will be a little bit of excitement about the next season. We need to move a couple of players on and get a leader at the back. Wholesale change never works. We also have some quality youth that should break through next season.

Tough to know for sure until we get a new coach in and that will be dependent on which coach we get.

We are that bad that Villa are going to be ahead of us next year, already doing some good bits in the transfers, we can even get a manager ?

I wouldn't say Walker and Dembele were certified top players prior to Poch. Walker looked like he had alot of potential under Redknapp and whilst out on loan, however under AVB and Sherwood (before he got injured) he looked poor. Other than when playing v Utd, Dembele looked average most of time until Poch's 2nd season.

I actually think the squad is currently better than what we had when Poch took over.

I agree and mentioned it a few times during the latter part of the season. With a bitter better tactics and improved confidence there is no way we drop those 20 points from winning positions. Everyone focused on the defensive mistakes but because we weren’t creating that many chances under Mourinho it was actually the big missed chances and questionable VAR calls that affected us just as badly. A combination of those things caused us to drop points. Even halving that should have been easy and would have got us top 4.

It really shouldn’t be that hard to rectify and keeping the ball away from our own goal should be the first priority. I never liked Mourinho’s low block, it was far too risky for a club/team like ours. Fortunately a new manager more than likely won’t operate like this. So already we’ve a better chance.

Obviously keeping Kane or making sure we spend the money from him wisely is paramount to how we do next season. But we will be in the mix for top four no question about it. We do need a good start to the season though. I fear with the bad feeling running round the club that the first home games might be very difficult for a new manager. We can’t turn on the team as soon as we go behind in games, they need the crowd behind them. A positive atmosphere is a must.

I think the crowd will take their lead from how the summer pans out. An acceptable name as manager, a couple of decent signings and i'm sure the atmosphere in the ground will be fine. Until at least half-time :D
