I was told that it was impossible to make this team defend. What exactly did Robinson do today?

Did it have anything to do wih the defenders though? I hav't watched the game yet, and only heard the radio so will need to watch tonight, but Boetang and JJ sounded like they game everything and closed everything down.

if Boateng was wearing a Jenas shirt he would've been average at best...

it's called history.

I am a person who believes that Jenas has potential to be a top midfielder; he definitely has pedigree.

But Boateng was very very good today. I was so suprised with his performance.

He dominated Mendes. Harry took Mendes' off and brought Davis on to try and ruff up Boateng and Boateng just owned Davis as well.

Top class. I cannot wait for next Saturday and to see Boateng and Jenas against their lot.

I liked the sound of Ramos's substitutions again today. Brought Defoe and O'Hara on and it sounded like it kept Portsmouth on the back foot at a time late in the game when historically we're very nervous and concede goals after a little pressure.

Looking at the league table one might think whats the fuss is about, but that win today means a lot to me, I was hoping for a draw today and next week against Arsenal, so in profit already.

Onward and upward, let the dross sink and the cream go to the top (eventually)

I thought we were also very good at defending against Man City, no?

Jenas and Boateng controlled the midfield in a way that never happened with Zokora along side Jenas. Today JJ and KPB complemented each other nicely but, Jenas was for me the better of the two.

You can't rough up Boateng cos Mr T is his Dad. He eats fools like Davis for breakfast.

Great performance from the lads especially the last ten minutes when we played some fantastic posession football, but still went forward.

I didnt think we played that good either to be honest..weve played much better earlier and lost....

I'm genuinely amazed by this comment. We really haven't played anywhere near as good all season and i'm worried that Football First won't show exactly how good we were when it comes to the non-exciting bits like keeping the ball etc.

Chrissivad, it had all to do with the defenders. Kaboul and Zokora were excellent and everyone else gave 100% to help them too, particularly Jenas, who made around 3 last man tackles. And Robbo held on excellently to 2 fierce low shots, which on other occassion could've easily rebounded off him.

Zoko has done very well having been asked to play deeper by Ramos. For me he's a much better player and reader of the game playing deep, sweeping things up. Dont like him in central midfield.

Didnt get to see the game due to problems with the telly. Saw the highlights however, and it looked good.

Seems like people are fighting over who was the best today, Jenas or Boateng. Now, I cant say anything about that, but when was the last time we argued over which of our CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS was man of the match? Back in the days of Carrick and Jenas, I reckon...

Also really really really pleased to see O'Hara given a chance. Always good to see youth coming through the ranks. Only saw his involvement in the goal, but he looked confident - which is always good...

Yes, I agree, but under the circumstances, there can be no doubt that this was our best defensive display. The clean sheet says it all. We conceded against Man City.

I think part of the problem is when Zoko plays in midfield he isn't really sure of his role and gets stuck part way between wanting to go forward and wanting to sit back.

When he is at the back he seems to just be all business, no messing around, clear the lines and back to business again. He has done well standing in at the back and Kaboul looked far more sure with somebody senior next to him.

Yeah it like the irony of having a match thread to discuss what happened in the match.

I sometimes wonder why I bother :-|

Just saw the goal for the first time, courtesy of egyptianplayers.com

Superb goal. Brilliant chip from Lennon and Berba knew exactly where to position himself.

I agree. I just think it is ironic that we pay £8 million for a central midfielder yet his best games for us this season have been at centre back.
