Son (MOM) was absolutely electric but the performance overall was very encouraging. 4-2-3-1 absolutely fits our team better than the 4-3-3 with a flatter 3 CM. Romero and Dier form a very good partnership as it looks like Dier is the communicator in the back.

At times I just about forgot Ndombele was on the pitch but I think part of that was Lucas dropping to the center and picking up the ball. Think the front four were much more fluid and looked liked they finally had an idea of how to play together.

I really don't get how Romero is getting higher ratings than Dier. Dier didn't put a foot wrong all game. Romero was at fault for their goal. ?

Dier did have a good game. The thing I like about Romero is that he's very proactive as a CB and that is like a breath of fresh air after watching all of our CBs back off constantly for years. He's very good at spotting an opportunity to fly up and get a tackle in. It will undoubtedly cost us on occasions, just like it did with their goal, but I think the benefits will greatly outweigh the costs. He's also very good in the air and composed on the ball. It's early days yet but I think on current evidence he'll turn out to be a great acquisition.

Dier might be looking better because he’s playing alongside a top class CD now!

A good CB would have dealt better with the ball across for Villas goal! He did however put his arm up very well appealing for offside

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm very pleased he's here and hope he's a starter for years to come.

BUT purely on the 90 mins yesterday it's odd to rate Dier lower than Romero, imo.

As @Japhet says, it was the aggressive defending that caught the eye, the stepping up to tackle as opposed to backing away and trying to shepherd the attacker to God knows where.
We're not used to seeing such progressive defending here and I think that's why he stood out so much.

I'm giving myself Man of the Match for the simple reason that every time I watch, we are shite, and every time I don't watch we do pretty well.
and i'd also like to apologize after the arsenal ''game'' i did find my spurs shirt at the bottom of the laundry bin, inside out. doh! my bad.

It's never just on 90mins though really, there's carry over from past performances in the judgement of Dier, it's natural. we've seen him play well in spells, we've seen him play badly also., it doesn't excite the fans so much when he's on a good turn because we've seen it go wrong from here before. Obviously if he does that for a season itll be great.

Romeros new so we're all looking a little harder, we don't really know what we've got yet (in that we haven't seen him play much), so I dont think it's a surprise that there is more reaction to a dominant performance exhibiting the raw skills needed to be a top player.

As many have already mentioned above the way he plays is so proactive and aggressive, so good to watch especially as we've been stuck with largely tame defending these last couple of seasons (peh and now skipp getting some minutes aside).

I'm trying really hard not to be a dick in response to this, but judging a players performance in any given match based on performances prior to that match is about as nonsensical as it gets.

The thread title is clear: Ratings Vs VILLA, in other words, over that particular 90 mins. How excited you are to see a new shiny toy also should be playing no part in rating a players performance in a match.

What you are talking about is rating based on biases which is fine if thats what you want but then there would be no point in these threads as Dier, Dele, Sanchez and Winks would never be given above a 6 no matter what they do.

I totally agree about liking Romero's proactiveness. However, the fact remains that his proactiveness led to his mistake which could have cost us 2 points in this particular 90 mins.

Maybe just rename the rating threads the bias confirmation thread.

I'm not saying its right, but that's just part of the equation whether the title of the thread asks for it or not. Doesn't mean peoples ratings are based purely on bias but its inevitably going to +/- 1 here and there, both ways, people who want to stick up for their faves will inevitably rate more positively (personally i find the odd overly positive comments/score for kane a bit difficult to rationalize with what I saw on the pitch).

I mean good luck trying to get everyones bias' out of the thread but i think it's a losing battle, changing the thread title would defo be the better bet....

Anyway the gripe around bias in a thread that shouldn't be aside, I might need to watch the goal sequence again (I havent had a chance to see a longer replay...) but did Romero actually give them the ball to start the move for the goal? He made the foul/missed the tackle granted, but we were more than matched up against the Villa attackers (Romero having taken one out of the move along with himself) for me to not really lay the blame of the goal on his plate massively. But yep wouldve obviously prevented it had he made the tackle.

Not to mention couple of quality raking long balls.

Romero dived in and missed his challenge, I’m pleased he made the effort, to get to him Villa walked past Moura and Ndombele who made no effort - that grates.
