I suppose it boils down to coming up with the goods in terms of decisive moments.
He cost less than half what Lamela did, and while he hasn't had any assists he's created more chances. He's also much less apt to give possession away.
Ultimately, Lamela's whopping transfer fee is always going to be a millstone round his neck, at least until he really starts to deliver. What makes it worse is that, Modric aside, our most expensive signings haven't justified their fees: Paulinho, Soldado, Bent, Bentley, Dembélé, Pavlyuchenko—it's not exactly a catalogue of success, is it?
If Lamela had cost £1 mill last year and put in the performances he has so far he would not be in the match squad.
The only "good?" things are that the fans are being patient with Erik and he does not appear to have confidence issues (understatement.)
I am fingers crossed about him but.....
Yep, that's was the same pick in my post in the team vs palace thread as well,.... I would expect Lamela to come in off the bench around the 60th minute for Lennon (or the like...)
IMO Lamela is a hot topic here because:
1- Soldado finally had a good performance with a goal (FINALLY) against everton and was the ONLY change in the squad for chel$ki (Lamela) to most of our collective surprise.
2- Most SC posting members are frustrated with Lamela's slow progress since arriving last year and having been expressing that concern here. But, there is a very vocal "Lamela 'til I Die" subgroup mixing up his potential (that I would say most of us agree he has great potential) with his mostly unimpressive actual performances (individual games).
For me, I like Lamela, believe he has outstanding talent/potential, but has not yet performed well enough to expect to be an automatic first 11 selection (see?... not yet) I do not believe he did enough Wednesday night to earn a starting spot tomorrow...
SC folks throwing stats around in this discussion have really brought a smile to my face,... it's DC_Boy and Stemark44 trying to defend Jenas,..... DC_Boy,.... the original "Jenas 'til I Die" fanatic.... good times
passing percentage is not the only element of play where a player loses possession,... just sayin'
Just because Lennon has the current form to keep his spot in the starting 11, Lamela-ites do not fear. It is only a matter of time before Lennon pops a hamstring or some such and Lamela is right back in there. I DO NOT WISH THIS, but since stats came up in this thread, then anyone is welcome to calculate the games Lennon misses (average) per season due to injury
Christian Eriksen has created more goalscoring chances (28) without actually providing an assist than any other Premier League player this season.
In short my SC faithful, enjoy please supporting your favourite players and try to not to attack your fellow Spurs' fans if they do not have the same favourite player Fences mended all?
BTW - I picked Bentaleb for MotM,..... but unfortunately we spent pages and pages discussing Lamela (seems unfair to him).
Lamela, has the potential but it is up to him to prove his worth.
I personally do not feel like he has been putting in the time or the effort to improve himself for the team. He should have learnt how the ball needs to be moved in the prem within 3 months of regular football and i do not think it is something he has grasped just yet.
If he can incorporate some simplistic football into his game and work on his right foot i think the kid has a bright future ahead of him..... but tricks and attempted skills only make me smile when someone has earned the right to do it and for tottenham h e has not yet.
Time to get his head down and work on proving he is capable of being the player he currently thinks he is.
It seems to me that he views this as a hobby rather than a career.
Again, have you forgotten Ronaldo in his first couple of seasons at United, nine-ten years ago? And, closer to home, Bale took three seasons at least before he really started clicking. More than a few people on here thought he should be shipped out. I'm not saying Lamela will come up to those two, but it's bloody ridiculous for a layman to start pontificating about what he should and should not be doing at this stage of his career, especially when the team performances have been largely shambolic.
Where did you get that Eriksen stat?
nothing malicious just wondering.
from the BBC match preview:
"You'd think Lamela would have learned to use his right foot before he came to Europe. Is it just us?"
That was you, SS57, talking about Lamela during the week.
According to Lee Dixon pros call it "kipper foot" if you can't use your "other" foot in any way.
To be fair we have seen a few kicks (mebbe 3-4 , always shots) with Lamela's right foot , he even scored with it once . He can use his right...he just won't until the crisis moment where the choice is shoot with his right foot or make no shot at all...even then he'll be pondering a Rabona ! , it looks quite powerful . Needs more confidence with it .
The coaches should be constantly on at him about his er 'kipper foot' problem . Quite possibly they are .
I havent forgotten Ronaldo and i absolutely dont see how it is relevant. As a fan who watches every minute the guy plays i am absolutely within my right to pontificate about what i think he needs to improve doing during the time he is on the pitch. I dont come on here and slate anyone - i just say what i see.....things which I think a lot of people see. I am willing to give him time but that doesnt mean that i dont expect to see an improvement - from him and everyone.
Not being a regular starter is probably testament to the fact that he is not yet ready to be the talisman we all hope he can be. And largely its up to HIM to change that.
It was, but the comment was directed at the implication that our coaching in particular and English coaching in general were inferior to European coaching in this respect. Clearly, they are not. I offer you Diaby as further evidence.
Right. And have you been pontificating over tactics and starting line-ups over on the Crystal Palace match thread?
Oh, I'll pontificate about line-ups and tactics with the best (and indeed the worst) of them, but not on the stage a young player effectively new to the league should have reached after the equivalent of just 11 games—otherwise I'd have jumped straight on to the 'Fazio is shit!' bandwagon, wouldn't I? You simply can't make a hard and fast rule. Some players seem to slot straight in; others take far longer, and some never make the adjustment.
How did you describe Fazio's early performances?
Separate names with a comma.
