Overall it was a pretty cagey game for the most part, with neither side taking huge risk or trying to force the play. City, like at the weekend, seemed a bit subdued, whilst we were pretty disciplined and got about them pretty well throughout. We managed to force a lot of promising counter opportunities, but didn't quite have that clinical edge.

I actually thought we were on the ropes a bit prior to the goal. City had their best spell of possession, Kane had hobbled off, others looked tired, we were losing discipline and focus with several players selling themselves too easily and a few more gaps were opening up and I was getting concerned. But then Eriksen played a super pass in behind, Son looks like he's ruined the chance, eventually gathers it, wriggles off the goal line, finds a gap and finds the net. We had something to hold on to, and battled our way to the final whistle.

It seemed everything was going against us tonight - VAR bullshit, Kane's injury, etc - but the team got through it, deserved to nick it on effort, have their noses in front and we didn't concede an away goal. It will be a tough 2nd leg but we go there with something to play for and have given ourselves a chance.

Lloris - Wasn't a great penalty, but made the save when required. Didn't have a great deal else to do.

Trippier - Looked ominous up against Sterling in the opening stages, but he settled down and had a very solid game.

Alderweireld - Didn't give them a sniff.

Vertonghen - Ditto.

Rose - Unlucky with the penalty. Didn't let it affect him, make that a full house of a good nights work from our back four.

Sissoko - Got to be honest guys, personally I think he's had many better games this season. Nothing awful, had some nice moments, pressed/covered well at times, but positionally I think he struggled quite a bit and I saw at least a handful of slapstick moments that put us in trouble. As ever put in a shift though for the team.

Winks - Slow start, but grew into it and worked hard.

Eriksen - Worked very hard and played some lovely passes, including for the goal.

Alli - Worked very hard for the first hour, was clearly fucked though for ages before he eventually came off.

Son - Worked very hard, popped up with a big goal to cap it.

Kane - Put himself about and managed to buy a few freekicks quite cleverly. Injury isn't good news obviously, but the team got on with the job and grabbed the win.

Subs:
Lucas - Had a good first run, after that I was tearing my hair out. Defensively kept switching off and didn't track runners. With the ball he made three awful choices in those closing minutes that just gave City the ball back needlessly and put pressure on us.

Wanyama - Crunched a few people. Not as many times as he slipped over - get some studs in your boots!

Llorente - Did ok.

Once again a great performance in the champions league. I've got the feeling the players think it's acheivable, whereas the league is beyond them.

Lloris.. Had a blinder, when he plays like this all the doubts go away.

Defence including and especially trippier were excellent. I say this as I've cursed him quite a lot. But he was very very concentrated tonight. Toby and Jan were imperious.

Sissoko for me though was the don of the night. He was very brave in the tackle in delicate crucial positions, he drove and kept it simple.

Winks makes a difference. Eriksen played some balls... Woof! Liked alli further up, he's more mischievous. I like mischievous alli.

Son doing his bits. Moura did well. Kane was doing his thing before the...

Great team performance though, huge concentration, confident, professional, and played some very nice bits at times. Worked as a team, pressed as a team and it worked.

We should show some class. I don't want to derail this thread. Yes we can move on... He does have history with us. He still loves this club. I doubt we'd Boo Bale...

Maybe he should show some class first
Diving and calling for utter bullshit handball decisions isn't showing spurs any love :cautious:

I thought our defence was outstanding, hell even Trips had one of his better games defensively

Just got back from the match and still buzzing
Jard to give anyone motm as we won as a team, but thought the defence was outstanding goving City no real opportunities. Leader of the back 4 is Toby, so gave him my vote but could have argued for just about any one of them.

Astounding performance after the penalty. The lads really lifted themselves and fought hard. A confident display and a magnificent crowd as well. It was so loud on the telly. I have to give MoM to Son for the goal. The whole team played well. I thought Kane, Eriksen and Dele were a threat. Sissoko and Winks were solid in MF but what an excellent defensive display by all four at the back. COYS!!!

Edit: 5 a the back. Brill save by Hugo ?

Everyone was fantastic but MOM has to be Sissoko for me.

He just doesn't stop working and provided so much assistance to Trippier against Sterling.

Dele for me. These last two games playing in different roles he has been our springboard player. He caused City no need of problems as when in this form he is very hard to keep quiet. But overall an immense team performance with of course Son stepping up once again when needed. As there is no selection for the whole team will give it to Dele then

every one good today. shout out to Trips for his job on Sterling.
I concure, well done Trips. I was worried for him before this game as I know Sterling is on form. I have been one of the many who have been on his back but credit where its due

Looking at the different candidates for MOM just goes to show that tonight was an absolute team performance where every single player contributed massively, with no player outshining the rest.

MOM - the team

I thought every player offered their utmost to the collective mission, but just felt that Harry Winks' contribution was the understated driving force. His balance and nous is hard to quantify but we are a much more rounded unit when he is on the field. We really need to protect and nurture this kid.

Massive props to Lucas when he came on, it cant be easy to be basically in the same sort of position he was in at PSG, playing the occasional substitute role

There was no weak point yesterday in our team. This was just great team performance. But special mentions for Trippier, Winks and Lloris. They were the players I was worried the most about and they were all great. Lloris - saved penalty, Trippier - coped with Sterling very well, Winks - brave and confident, some nice through balls.

MOTM - Dele Alli. His movement, passes, tricks is why we love football. He always does something unpredictable. What a player we have.

Central to this and the Pool match...is the return of the Poch press . After Soton ,Burnley etc who would have imagined that Poch could recalibrate what looked like an exhausted team into this new energetic phase .Players have stopped standing off the oppo and raced in to tackle , even Sonny ! Masterful Poch (9) . of course , as he said in the presser, all depends on whether the team can continue these effort levels .

Unfortunate about Kane (7) but he hadn't, for me , recaptured his goal machine qualities after his last injury . Yes he'll do a few wonderful long range passes and last night he battled for the team , but of rampant goalscoring Kane there has been little sign this calendar year .Nice long summer rest for him now .

Even Eriksen (8) was motivated to put in a shift in one of his last games for us (probably cos he thought himself in the shop window)

Dele (6.5) (as with all the players) put in a decent shift , but I like him further forward . When we have a transition to a sudden attack I prefer someone else on the ball . Dele has this lethargic quality in these situations that loses our impetus as he decides what to do .

Anyway , bloody marvellous , keep this energy level up and we'll make CL .

Sissoko has been the goat this season and deserves our player of the year award, absolutely immense and stepped up when it really mattered! I can forgive a miss or 2 as that’s not his game and never will be! If he could shoot as well he would be at someone like Barcelona so therefore I take him for who he is. Love the guy!
