Vertonghen was a surprise to me. Clearly asked to play further up (out of his normal position) and did a really good job getting crosses in. Unlike Davis, he usually managed to miss the first man and get something useful into the penalty area. Unfortunately we were lacking a genuine striker to do something with the crosses.

Verts has been our best left back in terms of technical ability since he joined. I remember he had a stint at left back and he made clear it's not where he wants to play. He just does it to help short term. But he was damn good at it.

Link below incase the fans that have forgotten claim he never played left back for us.

Result never in doubt
I kept telling myself

All the team on it
apart from Lucas.
Sanchez, Verts, Lloris, Winks MOM 8
Moura 5 should play wide
Rest 7 even Eriksen who played well in the 2nd. half
wouldn't have taken Lamela off.
But then I'm not the manager
and that's possibly why.

Spurs 2nd who would have thought it.
Well me obviously

Agree with you on all points. Sadly highlights that Davies isn't good enough when a CB can do it better.

Yet probably has the most points or close to on votes throughout the season on mom on these threads. Ridiculous he's not rated by fans.
No he hasn't, not even close. Go back and check

Winks was brilliant- always trying to grab the initiative and make things happen. Sanchez was very good and managed Rodon well and didn’t give him an inch after being bullied by him last year.

I also thought Verts was brilliant.

Sissoko was tactically good. He may not have stood out on the ball but off the ball he knew exactly where he had to be to fill in for others when they pushed forward.

We've all been watching the wrong game as Sky give Eriksen our (joint) highest mark 8 level with only Son...

I know football is subjective but fuck a duck. o_O

Winks was my MotM left everything out there and gave us drive impetus and class for the full 90.

But special mentions for Son (so much desire to play for us ATM)
Toby, cool as silk (i think that's right...)
Jan, the crossmeister general
Davinson "don't touch me!" Sanchez who is getting his rhythm and composure back at the right time

We were plugging away all game, I don't think you could fault the application, as we see so often though it's hard when teams come in like a 5-4-1 shape and just are camped on the edge of their box. I do think we overly rely on going wide too much, and need to improve our combinations and interplay in central areas sometimes, plus (like we saw for the goal in the end) sometimes we need to show some intent and have a pop at goal instead of recycling the ball once more, but it's difficult when there is so little space to operate in.

The first half was mostly, bar a couple of times where we switched off and had to scramble in defence, us camped in their third but no way through and chances being limited to a couple of headed ones. The second I thought we were a bit sloppy for about 15 mins and did allow Newcastle to push up the pitch and have some more of the game. Eventually the game settled back into it's opening pattern, and finally, with a lot of help it has to be said with the goalkeeper error, snatched the win. On balance we deserved to edge it, and though it was a long time coming we got there eventually and another big win to keep building momentum as we go into the latter part of the season.

Lloris - Made a smart save, and was out sharply a couple of times.

Trippier - Solid game, particularly first half he made numerous smart passes in behind them down the right channel.

Alderweireld - Calm and assured presence at the back.

Sanchez - Much better display from him today.

Vertonghen - Shuffled forward and did put in a few good crosses. Don't think he really provided any thrust or stretched the play down the left though and to be honest I wouldn't want him playing there on a regular occurrence. Did also have a couple of silly lapses defensively that were lucky not to be punished.

Sissoko - Ok. A few nice moments but on the whole rather redundant in a game like this.

Winks - Busy, kept things ticking over and controlled the centre of the park. First half was better, second half a little sloppier, but throughout a very decent display on the whole.

Eriksen - Worked hard and got better as the game went on but looked very subdued again a lot of the time and making silly little errors and choices. His first touch in particular seems to have deserted him at the moment.

Lamela - Started quite well, was quieter as the game went on and had less of an impact.

Son - Was busy but I thought he looked fairly weary today and did well to play as many minutes as he did. Popped up with the all important goal though when needed.

Moura - Missed a great chance and never really got into the game. He doesn't have the game intelligence to lead the line, and we're again asking far too much of him and his skillset. Couldn't have many complaints about being hooked.

Subs:
Llorente - The headed chance I guess you have to take him at his word, he lost it in the sun. The other chance he had was a difficult one but a fairly disappointing effort still. However, as has been said already, amazingly he managed to be the biggest threat we had all game going in behind them and causing issues, and in the end ultimately he did his job with the knockdown for the Son goal and his link up play was tidy.

Rose - Did ok.

Dier - n/a.

Found Lamela ineffective after a good start, see Poch telling him and trippier to sort it out as they were running in the same space, felt sorry for Moura as he was dealing with constant long balls which we don’t play when Ksne is starting, really impressed with Vertonghen, he created the best chances in the 1st half, loads better than Davies as a left back

The candidates mentioned multiple times were very good - Winks, Son, Sanchez, Verts.

I thought Eriksen put in another shocking display. Very little quality on the ball today and even less running off of it. He's one of those players that goes on small streaks of bad games across a season and he is in one of those periods now.

Trippier also continued his crap play.

Everyone else was alright. Was never going to be an easy game against a side playing 11 men back.

We played well, we dominated, we were patient and controlled and we got the luck we deserved (and the luck our managed deserved for some proactive use of substitutes).

Lloris pulled of a good save from a difficult shot, came off his line well several times and was pretty decisive with his distribution. Good game. Could do nothing about the Rondon attempt which thankfully hit the post.

Trippier was steady, not overly tested defensively and did get up his flank very well in attack, but sadly his distribution let him downwhen crossing. Still, he was improved from recent offerings and he did pass well down the flank on a few occasions.

Alderweireld was fine, not massively tested and dealt well with a few balls in the air.

Sanchez was imperious, absolutely controlled Rondon and appears to have learnt from his Mitrovic experience with this and the performance v Deeney both leaving him as victor.

Vertonghen was wonderful, what a rolls royce. Wonderful crosses throughout, really contributed to the attack without being caught out defensively, and I love the way he drops a shoulder to stroll past a marker despite not having much pace.

Winks was great, really lovely performance and our best player in my opinion. It isn't just the amount of passes he completed, it's the purpose of his passing, he's really kicked on lately and has gone from being neat to really identifying where to play the ball to cause most danger for the opposition. Throw in his ability to run forward with the ball through challenges and his fight defensively (loved his grit in battling with Rondon, who is twice his size, for the ball at one point) and we're seeing the evolution of a really complete midfielder.

Sissoko looked on form again, some nice link up with Eriksen and Trippier and was unlucky not to score from a clever corner. On more than one occasion he took the ball deep and relieved pressure with a good charge forward. It's a shame the ****s around me at Wembley still at most are begrudging in their praise and feel the need to be sarcastic about anything good he does, I was particularly rile when the dickhead behind me said 'must've been trying to clear it' when Sissoko forced the save with his first time shot from the corner.

Eriksen wasn't at his best but he still took responsibility for dictating our play and most of our moves forward were still knitted together by him. I can't help but feel he is being overly criticised lately because of his contract situation. He linked up well with Vertonghen down the left, was always taking the ball and using it in dangerous areas and hit good passes long and short. Yes, he is falling short of his own standards but he still didn't play badly.

Lamela was pretty good. He dordled on occasion, but he took the ball and held it well throughout the match, brought others into the game and deserved an assist for his lovely dinked ball to Lucas who sadly couldn't finish. Unlucky not to score with his headed attempt.

Son doesn't look like he's 'empty' at all. Constant running on the ball, dealing with multiple markers, using his skill and pace to cause havoc and create space for others and while his decision making wasn't always on point, he was our biggest threat by far. Deserved his goal even if fortuitous.

Lucas was ok, once again he is being harshly criticised. He should have scored with his headed attempt and he didn't link brilliantly with the others but he pressed well and was always trying to unlock Newcastle when on the ball. I don't think posters here yet appreciate the difficulty in playing as a lone striker against a ten man defence, particularly when your strengths are based around having the ball played in front of you rather than into your feet.

Llorente came on, got the knock down for the goal and barring a solar related loss of vision could have scored himself. He gave our attack more focus and looked sharp and involved.

Rose allowed us to change formation and used his pace well a couple of times to bring the ball out of defence.

Dier had little time to affect things.

2 games now Sanchez has looked back to his best, which I’m delighted about. He’s got a fantastic future ahead of him, same as foyth.

Personally Winks MOTM for me, he was all over the pitch. Fantastic passing range today and drove us on until the 90th. He’s got a lovely turn of pace.

Jan no longer surprises me. He’s such a fantastic footballer, you could probably throw him at striker and he’d put in a good shift and give the opposing center backs one of the toughest games of their career. He is someone that seems to just have a brilliant footballing mind. He’s always in the right spot and knows what he can and can’t get away with.(y)

Winks.

Sanchez was close & I couldn't help but notice how well he's learned to read the flight of the ball from goal kicks. It seemed that Rondon was trying everything to get in front or behind Sanchez after each kick, and jump to win the header. But Sanchez never seemed to need to move, and still won pretty much every battle against Rondon.

Vertonghens crossing was better than anything we've had from the left this season.

Lamela needs to give Eriksen lessons in how to take a corner. Made such a change to actually see our corners getting into the mixer & creating problems for the opposition.

It was the usual weird tactics. Few crosses to Llorente but plenty to Lucas. We just didn't play to his strengths and Newcastle sitting deep meant be had little space to move
The problem with this is that Lucas is exactly the quick, tricky player that we were all hoping would unlock the bus parkers. If that’s not his strength, then what is?
