As is often said...

Ajax is usually a team of kids, and at that point he was probably the next one to be sold and so was the 'senior' guy. For us he's shown no leadership qualities at all, and I include stuff like leading by example.

I think true leaders are pretty rare to be honest. Terry might be a **** but after Roy Keane he's probably been the best leader there's been in the last decade.

King wasn't a leader and neither was Dawson. I think Vertonghen would make a better leader than the pair of them, as he has good qualities as a footballer and has a brain, I also notice him being very vocal with players and referees, but I accept he's not ever going to be a Terry/Keane/Adams type.

I think Dier is showing real potential as a leader, but funnily enough I was thinking the same as @Mr Pink this week, in the interim I wouldn't mind seeing Mason given the job. He's been at the club since he was a nipper, he takes the fight to the opposition every game, leading by example, he's got a brain and he's in the middle of the park.

Definitely on board with the Mason captain idea, he has everything you'd want from a captain. Add in a respectable strike rate and you've got yourself a modern day Bryan Robson.

Has anyone got lamelas stats when he came on ? He kicked it out of play twice and lost it 3 times in five minutes but I might of missed a few more. Couldn't believe poch put him on it only put us under the cosh more.

Whereas when moussa came on he was class, didn't give it away and was such a fantastic outlet for us. Still the strongest player in our squad by a mile, no one can knock him off the ball, great to have in the last 10 when you need to keep it.

Sorry are you a supporter?
Did Lamela knick your women?
Give it a rest.

King at least led by example, and with his consistency. He also did talk to others around him more than he was given credit for, it was just in his quiet manner. Vertonghen doesn't really seem much of a talker, he isn't a model of consistency, and one of these days his petulance is going to get him sent off.

Mason I agree could be a candidate going forward. Dier maybe, would have to pay attention a bit more to what he does in this aspect of things during games.

On the whole I think people need to step up across the pitch. At times I think some of them are too afraid to speak up and take command of a situation. You see it in a number of ways... I was writing the other day about how we have rather too many occasions where two players go for the same ball. Another one is how we sometimes seem to lack urgency when defending from stuff like throw ins and restarts, instead of having someone marshalling the troops and keeping up standards we have switched off. We do have more fighting spirit in the team now, but I still think we have a bit of timidity in some areas and we need a few more 'voices'.

King was a very good footballer but he wasn't flawless, he made mistakes too and I think he was a poor leader, I never saw him bollocking ever or organising much.

I think Vertonghen has been one of the lost consistent players for us this season. He's dropped a couple of bollocks in the last couple of weeks and most CB's will do throughout a season because when they fuck up it gets exposed, unlike much of the crap that goes on ahead of them, but by and large I think he's been bloody good and as a footballing CB one of the best in the EPL.

If you look around the prem how many outstanding CB's are there ? Even the top sides can't find them. Liverpool paid 20m for Lovren. ManC paid 30m for Mangala.

I think Vertonghen is largely under appreciated by Spurs fans because he doesn't where a big dopey "I'm so pleased to be here" smile and doesn't charge around like loon all the time.

Firstly, BIB... Just no.

Consistency as in over his whole Spurs career. I don't think he's ever strung together 6 months of good form as of yet.

I agree that the standard of defending has got worse, that's a problem worldwide and partly due to the trends of modern football. Not sure what that has to do with Vertonghen being leadership material though.

I would have said he was a reasonable candidate. For a start he's one of the few nailed on starters over the last couple of years. I think he is better and more consistent over his Spurs career than you do, I think he's an intelligent chap and he does communicate with those around him and officials.

I accept leaders a thin on the ground generally and at Spurs, but I can't think of too many better candidates than him really, certainly not until Dier matures or Mason is given a go.

I didn't get what this was referring to ?

This:

I think Vertonghen is largely under appreciated by Spurs fans because he doesn't where a big dopey "I'm so pleased to be here" smile and doesn't charge around like loon all the time.

I assumed is bringing Dawson into the mix. I don't want to get into that debate, and I know you aimed it at all Spurs fans, but from a personal point of view all I can say is that's just bollocks.
