And Poyet admits it is vital that Keane is at White Hart Lane next season to continue his profitable partnership with Dimitar Berbatov.

Gus gets firm hold of Kop target Robbie
By Neil Silver
Tottenham striker Robbie Keane has been pinned against a wall and told: You're not joining Liverpool!
The club captain has been linked with a move to Anfield, but Spurs assistant manager Gus Poyet revealed: "My first task at pre-season last week was to pin Robbie to the wall and tell him: 'You're staying!'
"I was shocked when I heard him being linked with Liverpool - he's a very important player for us." Republic of Ireland ace Keane, who is 28 on Tuesday, grew up supporting Liverpool.
He scored 24 goals for Spurs last season and the club have put a £20million price tag on him to deter predators.
Spurs' other strikers are also wanted men.
Darren Bent has been linked with a switch to Sunderland, and Dimitar Berbatov is a target for several clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United.

Is the author a gooner?

Thinking Robbie's the club captain - he certainly isn't a Yid.

obviously, as his article suggests that Robbie was desperate to leave and Arsenal may bid for Berbatov

the quality of those artlicles is ridiculously low

For many years certainly a disproprtionate amount of People football journos were Spammers - I suspect that's still the case

One of the many reasons, I don't take this paper seriously on spurs matters

But hang on I don't trust any of them when it comes to Spurs - so mmm I guess there are just degrees of lack of resppect from my POV

Why do these poor journo's make up crap as they go along, they love making out that someone linked with a club supports them, or did do at one point. I swear Keane himself said he supported Celtic when he growing up.

There was a video of him and Damien Duff celebrating a Celtic victory in a pub, but hey, when did facts ever get in the way of a story?

A lot of Irish support Celtic and an English club. It is very common.

...because they were the teams they used to show on tv most often and were the easist matches to get to..jump on the Liverpool ferry. London is much harder to get to.

There are MANY Yids living in Ireland....North AND South, and that has been the case for as long as I can remember (1955-now). Obviously there were more 'card carrying, kit wearing' Yids when things were going well but....experience a Spurs game in Ireland and the sudden appearance of Cockrel clad fans is a joy to behold!
Robbie is not unique in his boyhood allegiance to Pool (or Utd.Leeds or Everton). They were always the favorites of earlier years. A true Irishman (Southern Brigade lol) will traditionally support 1 English team PLUS Celtic (Rangers for some in NI...but what do they know? lol). I am glad to impart that WE, at WHL are well liked (old school anyway) and respected, if only for out free flowing football traditions....but Robbie has made us more acceptable....just as Lawro did for Pool, Sheedy for Everton...the Reading and Sunderland Irish contingents....We have always been a well supported team in the 32 Counties (evenb if Doc saw himself as Irish! We apologise for that one lol). COYS!

Notice that Gus doesn't reject the rumour but says only that Spurs cannot afford to lose Robbie.

I find this statement by Gus very interesting. Plus, amusing of course.

He's not in 'the Gang of four' so while he'll possibly be consulted he may well have little knowledge on definite moves, their likelihood and timings. It's also written as if 'I read about this' rather than 'I heard this from Robbie', which makes me still think there is little in the story. And, of course, all this means Spurs can backtrack safely as if hasn't come from the highest echelons.

I can't help but wonder if the club/Donna Cullen/Juande/DL have suggested Gus make a statement like this. Or at least welcomed his comments.

Mainly because if they are 100% confident that Keano will stay (which due to his contract length they could be) and not do a Gary Barry, then come September 1st they will have a tremendously strong PR statement about how one of the Premier League's top players chose Spurs over Liverpool (even if it took a little convincing).

I can't believe there is so much fuss about who Keane supported growing up. Its just somethng the press have brought up in order to give the rumour some credibility. It doesn't matter who players supported growing up. When they become professional footballers, they make a move to the best club for their career. In fact, most players probably become fans of different clubs as they get to know the club better. I'm sure Keane has learnt a hell of a lot about Spurs since he arrived, and will support Spurs when he leaves/retires (whichever comes first.)

If it was so important who players' supported growing up, then Berbatov would be playing in black and white.

I can't help but wonder if the club/Donna Cullen/Juande/DL have suggested Gus make a statement like this. Or at least welcomed his comments.

I wreckon it was more a case of the journos asking Gus about the Keane situation more than us actually coming out with a statement. I'm guessing there have been a lot of reporters around since we started pre-season, and they managed to catch up to Gus and get a few comments. He never was the quickest midfielder afterall.

OK, Liverpool sold Crouch. Who can replace him? I'm afraid that they may try to lure Keano as he seems to be a more realistic target than Villa. There is no chance Liverpool to pay £30m for Villa who btw recently stated that he is happy to stay at Valencia. Santa-Cruz?

It depends if he wants a partner for Torres, or someone who can play the same role as him in a 4-2-3-1... It would seem strange that they would change to 442 next season after finding a beautfiul balance with Torres and Gerrard allowed to play off each other. Going to 442 would also bring back the boring "Gerrard on the right" debate as Rafa always wants to holding players: Mascherano and Barry.
