That's a risk I'd expect Levy to take. Spending £30m on a player who can't play for months and will be worth half that in 4 months time anyway would be financially negligent.

Why try and buy him at all then? We can get him for free in a year.

This seems too much of a coincidence to me. This comes out as soon as Sigi fee agreed. Screams, 'we're selling him for less than we said we would we need an excuse as to why.' Don't think he's injured, Barkley hasn't had a preseason so didn't expect an immediate start anyway.

Depends how committed Barkley is to actually joining us.
In 4 months, we may see other clubs move for him on the basis that he's going to be on a reduced transfer fee.
Factor in that from March he can negotiate a free transfer to another country (but can't move until summer), and it is indeed a risk that Levy needs to weigh up.
He may also see Everton starting to improve, threaten for a top 4 slot and sign a new deal...

Oh I'd say he is injured alright just not as badly as they are letting on.

Because he will make our team better this year. My point is that he won't make our team better before December as he has not had a pre-season, he's just had a hernia op, and now has a grade 3 tear of his hamstring. Why pay £30m (and wages of £100k plus a week I presume) for a player who won't be able to play, when we could pay £15m for the same player in 4 months (when he will be able to play)?

Because we are buying a human being not a pair of shoes. And I don't understand how you've come to the conclusion that he'll only make our team better in December? Even if he comes back in October a little bit undercooked he'll still be a considerable improvement over Sissoko.

I'd be tempted to wait until Jan at a further reduced price
Too risky I think there would be a lot more competition for his signature then and we don't know how this season will pan out yet, come January we may be miles off the top and wont be as attractive perhaps.

Agreed - let's get him now he's keen. How much would we save? 5m? Maybe 10m if we're very lucky?

Everton might be flying, we might not, others might throw their hat in the ring...if we want him, we can get him for (what is in this market) an attractive price.

Gift horses, looking at mouths, not doing- or something to that effect...

Plus I believe in Jan he will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club. Probably with a ridiculous signing on fee and inflated wages since he'd be leaving for free in the summer. If Poch wants him and we he wants to join, buy him now.

Jermaine Jenas‏Verified account@jjenas8

Medicals are there to spot future issues like wear and tear to hips, knees, ankles..etc a torn muscle wouldn't stop a deal go through

Who the f*ck does this guy think he is...he may be an actual (or ex) professional footballer but until he's got an ITK badge I think we have to take what he says with a pinch of salt.

Until Dragon1 or Ben says something on the matter, it's irrelevant IMO...

From the convo I had this morning the injury is not as bad as is being reported.

If so, I hope that isn't leaked too widely. We don't just want to help spare Everton's blushes, as this is got over the line at a good price, we want a reputation as a club that is reliable at sparing blushes.
