Fair point, but why not have the, relatively, low cost insurance that Saido could provide?

This season he could provide pace off the bench and, currently, a bigger goal threat than Janssen. Even if we come 4th a couple of extra goals could have been 3rd, or finishing above Arsenal etc.
An OK striker if we can't land a better striker in the Summer (and with our last few forays into the striker transfer market it doesn't look good).
An OK striker to replace Janssen if he doesn't improve in his second season.
A guaranteed profit if we get in a better striker in the Summer and Janssen does improve next season.

For me it's a win-win so I see no reason why we wouldn't buy him.

Nothing is 'guaranteed' at all. You only need to look at Fernando Torres to know that a player can lose form and never get it back. how much were people thinking Ighalo was worth last season or Amir Zaki a few seasons before.

Even an off-form Berahino would be worth more than we pay for him with 6 months of his contract left (5-10 million).
We sold Pritchard to Norwich for £8 million off the back of only a couple of appearances for us and the transfer market is only going to get more inflated in the future.

West Brom will probably still want £15m+ for him.

Considering how our previous negotiations went with West Brom, I would expect them to choose him leaving for free at the end of the season over him leaving now for a penny less than his full market value (or whatever overblown value they put on him).

For me this is exactly what we should avoid.

We've had many Prem proven players join who did not make an immediate impact. Dembele took a long time and the likes of Bentley also struggled. Sissoko recently said not having a pre-season and adapting to Poch's intense training regime took a while.

So thinking Berahino is any sort of guarantee is imo naive.

If we need a quick striker off the bench then we have Son.

We've seen before buying players who don't perform can stay in the squad for a long time and eat up our wage bill so believing signing Berahino is a guranteed profit maker is simply not learning from history.

You know how it works in this forum... a player plays well and we can't afford them, or they get dropped for whatever reason meaning they're crap and not good enough for us. When we failed to sign Saido the 1st time around people were saying he should drag his heels and rundown his contract yet after doing this he's now classed as having a bad attitude and being a fat knacker

Berahino IMO would be perfect for our squad. I also believe he's a good striker and would dove tail well with our current striking options plus Alli. He has good movement and strikes the ball clean...if we could get him for no more than 15M its good business.

The other side of that coin is that Bentley was instrumental in getting us into the CL in 2010 as was Dembele last year and Sissoko is already changing most people's opinion of a month ago.

6-8m then its worth the punt
e

I agree in todays market and at his age if we get him fit and scoring that`s a £30 million player easily.I think our style football would suit him and I think in a group of young England regulars he will be motivated to do well.

West Brom have changed owners since we last bid for Berahino.

£15m for a bloke who's contracts up in the summer, has a dodgy attitude and has only scored 4 goals in his last 35 league games?

I don't think Bentley was instrumental at all.

The post I was responding to suggested Berahino would likely get several goals to help us along. My argument is there is no guarantee at all of an immediate impact.

I'm fully aware of Dembele's ability and performances last season. My argument was he didn't do it straight away despite Prem experience.

I take your point but I stand by what I said about Bentley, it started going bad with him the following season and beyond
