Shameful minutes ‘silence’

Yeah as others have said sounded to me like it was people in the concourse, either tanked up or on their way in, and oblivious.

It always happens is the truth - I remember a few years back at one match (I think WBA away) a minutes silence being accompanied by the drunken rendition of Arsenal fan on a string from those still in the concourse and oblivious to what was happening outside, as the rest of our away contingent collectively put their head in their hands and a couple rushed inside to tell them to STFU.

Why I always think applause is better than silence. Too many people to control and pass it off incident free. Applause can drown out both the intentional and unintentional disrespect.

On the stream I was watching that was an Aussie channel I believe, they kept boosting the sound when there was any noise to highlight it. I'm guessing Sky weren't doing that?

It would be very easy for the club to review footage and identify those that disrespected the minutes silence. Simply ban them.

You want to ban people for speech? Seriously? It was distasteful but not as distasteful as banning people for their speech.

20 or so idiots bought shame on our great club today.

It’s not about being pro/anti royalty. It’s about showing respect to an old lady, who spent her entire life trying to represent our nation in the best way she could.

I really hope the people who couldn’t keep their mouths shut and opinions to themselves are named/shamed/identified and are made extremely unwelcome at our great club, by the vast majority of our fans who are/were impeccable
Well we know who 5 of them were by looking at your reps.

I was watching the Aussie stream and I thought it was being muffled every time it started to break out. Plus they would just be taking the feed direct from the host anyway.

From what I could make out (North upper) it was people still in the bar area singing spurs songs and people out in the stands shouting down the corridors “SHUT THE FUCK UP”.

It was impeccably observed by everyone in the stands but you could hear faint chants in the distance then one or two voices screaming at them ?‍♂️

I personally gave them the benefit of the doubt that they didn’t realise the time and were so deep into their drinking and singing that they didn’t twig it was the minute silence at that moment.
Good to know. Do u think the stadium's acoustics played into it?

I don't understand what democracy has to do with it to be honest. It's about respect. If you don't respect the monarch fine, if you don't respect the Queen herself fine. Then respect the fact the club has requested we be silent for a mere 60 seconds. If you have an issue with someone in power then protest, and show your discourse when they are alive not just after they've died. That would be the democratic thing to do.
100% this.

Bet they wouldn’t have had the guts to even whisper at Rangers in their last couple of games. ?

Drunk football fans in being ****s shocker.

Having said that, if you spend 12 years holding the public in contempt, don't be surprised when the public act contemptuously.
When did the Queen ever do that ? ?

I hate a number of our Prime Ministers etc and even more of our so called celebs but if I were asked to take a minutes silence I’d have the common decency to keep my opinions to my self at that time, particularly if it were only for 1 minute of my life.

Not really, if anything I’d say it was the absolute silence from 99.9% that emphasised it more (always feels quite spooky when that many people are silent).

Trying to think of potential solutions going forward. I.e. using the screens to inform people there will be a moment silence before the game or a countdown to let people know it’s happening soon (something I’ve never seen before and it’s always just assumed that people will know). Then again I’m not sure any of those singing in the bars would have been looking at any screens in the concourse ?‍♂️

People just see establishment.

But it's been established that it was just drunk singing on the concourse, from people who didn't know what was happening, amplified by the near absolute silence in the stands. Nothing more sinister.

The similarly drunk fans in the stands shouting "shut up you ****s" were probably more embarrassing.

Isn't it normally announced prior to the game and at the game? The club announced we were doing it. It was expected as well being the first game in this country for us after it happened.

Not if it was just concourse noise or people who did not know entering the stadium. But if it was someone who waited until the middle of a respectful minutes silence and deliberately shouted out something knowing they would offend / anger tens of thousands of people who were observing the silence then yes, I’d want them banned. We don’t need that kind of person associated with our club and fan base.

Drunk idioots is one thing (and drunk is no excuse for many things in my book), but I guess it wasn't like Celtic the other night.

No one could be more anti-monarchy than I am but if I'm at an event where the organisers have asked for respect for someone that has died then I would keep my mouth shut - if I couldn't I wouldn't go. Others feel differently but they just make themselves look thuggish and disrespectful. What do they gain by behaving that way? Certainly won't convince anyone to listen to any point they wish to make.

Did anyone hear what was shouted out? Swear it was just a couple of shouts of noise but couldn’t hear what was said??

come on you spurs

bloke sounded drunk. Seemed to come from the east stand or the eastern side of the south stand from where I was sitting.

Fucking embarrassing
