On the Southampton fans forum they seem to think it's Pelle that will leave (Lazio bound) and not Long. Re the latter they wanted shot of him at the beginning of December but opinions are divided now after his run of form. Despite being nearly 29 they want £12-18m for him and say although he'll run all day his finishing is poor. Surely we can do better than Long and Berahino.

I think Long has been really unfortunate in his career to have been at clubs with average expectation and quality...

I think him and Austin would've fit what we've needed this season..
Not amazing players.. but put them in a side that create chances and who knows.. currently they've both had careers where they've had to make their own chances..
I hear a lot of QPR fans say that Austin can't play loan striker role.. but in a team that are playing the whole match in their 3rd that would be very difficult for him..

It's similar to Shane Longs career too.. he's always been 2nd or 3rd choice at mediocre to relegation sides..

If there was any chance in getting him I'd absolutely take it.. he's a fighter that (can) score goals..
I'm starting to think that there are no plans for a top class talent coming in.. maybe berahino but think he'll be more likely an addition to the behind the striker role.

And yet this is somehow being used as a justification for signing him? You would have thought that if those mediocre to relegation sides might have taken a punt on playing him if they were that desperate.

He's had game time.. and 1 in 4 playing bit parts for those sides isn't all that bad..
Kane had a similar record if you tally up all his loan spells..
Long may not have suited the systems and managers for those sides as first choice.. and not saying he would be first choice at Spurs but would definately be more than adequate squad player..

It seems you would rather sign no one than someone with PL experience and a player that would suit the style we play!

Having said that.. I don't believe we will sign him or anyone for that matter..

I didn't say that at all. We need a striker who can carry the load if Kane gets injured, or play up top with him if we want to change the system.

What I did say was that it seems a rather bizarre notion to think that someone who has been third or fourth choice for mediocre to relegation teams over his 10+ years as a footballer could be seen as a positive solution to our current challenge.

He definitely has not been third or fourth choice over his whole career. He was first choice at most places until scbc, hence him having 30+ appearances each season.

Seems he's Liverpool bound anyways

More bizarre than this?
Based on our second half performance alone, we need someone who can get on the end of crosses in a crowded penalty box on a regular basis. We need a presence. He'd give us that, would work hard, Poch got the best out of him before and he'd cost next to nothing. He'd be an ideal third striker for the coming season.

Having said that, we won't get him, I'm sure our interest was to spur west brom along and we can play the, "we won't go for lambert if we can talk to Berahino" card which is so often rumored but probably never happens in practice.

For someone that wanted Lambert as 3rd choice at start of season would surely welcome Shane Long for a similar role.. for a start you get a faster younger alternative if nothing else!!

The problem with this is that Long would be a back plan because Levy has pissed off the Chairman at WBA, but he has also pissed off the Chairman of the club who own our back up plan. Anyone spot the theme?

Yes. Nobody takes the piss out of our Chairman. I just thank God he's on our side and not the other.

Why should each player be mutually exclusive? Are you suggesting that, god forbid, Kane gets injured & you'd be happy to entrust the rest of our season to a 19 year old lad with absolutely zero experience of top flight football?

I can understand you (and anybody else) not fancying Shane Long, but I think you're being a little shortsighted, perhaps?

Only hindsight will tell us that, but I have my opinions, some will be right and some will be wrong. Who are we to know.

So just cause you don't rate a player and don't want to sign him, means you're a snob? Top logic shitheads. On that account I guess most of you are snobs cause you probably wouldn't want someone like Anichebe.

You're much more intelligent than that post suggests, Chris. The snobbery comment is based solely upon people believing (not thinking) that Shane Long is some sort of 'bottom feeder' , whilst we are the cream on top of the worlds best cake. (y)

I do hope we get him.. Someone useful and who doesn't mind coming in from the bench for most games.. Furthermore he has played in the league for so long, no adaptation needed.. And he wouldn't cost us to break a bank

Congrats to Kemar for scoring 9 goals in 24 games in League 2, and congrats to Conor for scoring 10 goals in 24 games in League 1 at the incredibly young age(s) of 23.

I have nothing against signing players from the lower leagues, but only if they have been truly exceptional or clearly have a very high potential. Adam Armstrong, who is the top scorer in League 1, is 18. That's the sort of player we should be looking at.
Washington is signing for QPR, what are we going to do @TEESSIDE1 ??? :p
