Ricky Ponting was fined 40% of his match fee for arguing with the decision of the match referee. Ponting was charged with a Level 1 offence under article 2.1.3 (h) of the code which relates to "arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the umpire about his decision".

We all know referees in all sports can get things wrong but they are the law of the game at the time and once a decision has been made then it should be stuck to.

Respect in football is dead. Players are often seen using foul and abusive language to a ref - this happens at all levels.

I know cricket has the advantage of video and other technology, where a third umpire can review an incident and give a decision that is not based on a split-second view.

Should football all introduce this; Technology and match fines for Code of Conduct breach?

Yes and yes. Even if it is just at the top level I can't think of a good reason why you wouldn't.

I disagree with fines because the wealthiest players wouldn't care and it isn't a fair punishable system.

There needs to be better communication between the players and the ref.

The offending player and captain should be able to talk to the ref and everyone else stay 10 yards away.

Anyone breaking this gets an immediate booking. The back-chatting would soon stop and respect would eventually be restored in part.

Sounds like a brilliant idea.

If anything like this was ever introduced I'd like to see the fine to be substantial and directed straight at the player and not in any way payable by the club. It'd have to be on the same percentage basis, as above, for fairness throughout the different wage structures at differing clubs, but still, a cracking idea.

1 weeks wages (percentage wise 100%!), with all monies received sent to a charity in the same region as the club for any foul or abusive language towards the ref, for every single incident. Problem solved by next week. Beautiful.

Great post, mate. Repped.
