Under the "Webster Ruling", Rooney can buy out the remainder of his current contract this summer for just £5m, meaning he would be a free agent. Now, (here comes the maths) a 4 year contract worth £230k per week is equal to £41.6m.

However, at Spurs we could afford to give him £70k per week, within our pay structure, if he buys out his contract with United. That would equal just about £14.5m over the same 4 years. That basically means we would then pay Rooney directly around £30m (£20m less than what we would have to pay United to buy him) & Rooney would get the £41m he wants off United as well as the £5m it cost to buy out his contract. So, could we pay £30m for 1 of the best strikers in the world & keep him within our wage structure? Yes, we could.

On top of that, a good negotiator could actually knock a few more pounds off that. Basically, £30m today is worth MUCH more than £30m spread out over 4 years. I dunno how much difference the tax would make, maybe a little, but the interest Rooney would make by getting that money in advance would be virtually like an extra £5m depending on where he invests it, maybe more.

So financially it is definitely doable, especially if we are indeed looking at a £30m striker. Getting Rooney would be no different than paying a club £30m for any other star striker, but at least having already given Rooney the money we can justify keeping his wages down.

However, I'd rather have Suarez.

More tongue and cheek than anything! Not an absolute hope and the obvious factor in all this is that Rooney and his agent have offers on the table for him - they know pretty much where he is going at this stage, and it aint Tottenham.

If he stays in England its City.

Cracking time for us to be playing them next week mind you. Their confidence is well low and they will all still be preoccupied with the Rooney situation.

Giggs will probably be out and all we need now is Nani to get crocked at Stoke!

If Ledley is back by then, fingers crossed, we will have a fantastic chance of beating them if we can apply ourselves mentally. Even without Ledly I give us a decent chance.

Picking up something tomorrow night would be huge for our belief and confidence for the upcoming games.

Does it have to be all about the money? Everton-United-City - he wont have many friends left! Money and the fact that he can stay in the same area will weight heavy, but who knows he might fancy a change of environment? I'd say L'arse and Chelski ahead of us in line as well but 4th choice still in with a chance, no? But, tbh, with VDV dont know if Rooney is the kind of player we really need - I'd rather we'd gone all in for someone like Zlatan or Benzema..

on Sky sports it was reported that he is fed up of being hounded by the press up north and then skysports were saying the best place is Spain/Italy to get away or to london, so probably chelsea....

if we could get him then we should go for it, but cant see him coming to us or us being able to afford him anyway

I don’t think there’s any harm in enquiring about him. Though with that said I very much doubt he’d come here, mainly because I think this whole saga is money oriented.

Is it? He is thoroughly rolling in it as it is and Man U were willing to offer him even more. Certainly a magnitude beyond what we could.

Colleen may very well be a factor. Well, maybe. (If he moves to City then quite obviously not)

I guess time will enlighten us all but regarding your initial sentence it couldn't possibly harm to enquire. Aim high n'all that.

I'm fairly sure that the Webster ruling only applies if the player wants to buy out his contract in order to move to a different league

Reports suggest he wants up to £150,000 a week so I think it's more than a bit money oriented.

With those wage demands and having already cheated on his wife I would have thought he was nailed on to sign for Chelsea.

My bad I must have misread the initial reports on his situation.

I thought he was already on such elevated wages, not demanding them

I'm sure he's on big wages certainly but if he's looking for 150k a week then that prices out most clubs in Europe. It pretty much leaves City, Chelsea, Real, Barca and maybe an Italian club or two.

Let's put it this way. He certainly won't be taking a paycut and that already puts him out of our league.

And if all else fails we can break-out the rustly brown paper envelopes:grin:

 Could just be that he can see from the inside that four off their best players are about to retire (Scholes, Giggs, Neville, Van der Saar), and one is a serial crock (Ferdinand). On top of that how much longer will Fergie be around (remember how sudden Cloughie's decline was:shrug:), and that the club is in serious financial difficulties with video-nasty owners seriously alienating the fans. The fact that they are in serious danger of being eclipsed by their near neighbours for the first time in almost half a century can't help either.

Oh TSH, you kill me (greavsie)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_agent

In professional sports, a free agent is a player whose contract with a team has expired and who is thus eligible to sign with another club or franchise.
The term came into wide use in North America after sports leagues stopped using a "reserve clause", which provided a repetitive option for the club to renew the contract for one or more years but did not allow the player to terminate.
In the European Union, the 1995 Bosman ruling by the European Court of Justice established this right for association football players in all EU member nations. The Bosman ruling has since been extended to cover other professional sports and players from Eastern Europe. Players were still tied to their clubs unless their contract ran out until the Webster ruling allowed players the opportunity to move between nations, though it does not free footballers to move within the national league in which they currently play.

I'm up for a cheeky bid for Rooney - a case of Tennants Super and some cheese & pineapple on cocktail sticks should do it.

Seriously though this whole Rooney saga could be another blessing for us. Hopefully it will affect the whole team and see them slip down the table a few places giving us a better chance of another top four finish.

Only Rooney we would stand a chance of signing would be Coleen, she would be an upgrade on Crouch mind
