Harry was prepared to take quite drastic action to ensure that Wilson played against Fulham. But in his shoes, would you be prefer WP to make a professional foul against Fulham in order to ensure that he'd be available for our run of three fixtures against the sky 4 from 11/14 to 25 April, missing only matches against Portsmouth and Sunderland ?

Of course, if we did beat Fulham, that would provide the Semi Final for Wilson to potentially be suspended for, meaning he could pick up a booking against Pompey in the league, and still get back in time for the 'big' 4 matches.

It's only either 3 or 4 matches till the amnesty on April's second sunday though - so maybe we can take the risk on his ability to not get sent off in any of them ?

I'm sure Wilson was rested as much as he was protected. All the tv pundits failed to pick up on the obvious tactical nous in Harry's decision, but that only serves to prove how good BAR is and how ignorant they are.

But in answer to the question, I'd say the most important thing would be to play his natural game. No going looking for a booking, no avoiding one. If he does get one against Fulham it wouldn't be terrible at all. So I voted that.

Get booked for excessive celebration following a hat trick. I'll be happy with that.

dont think harry had bookings in mind when playing kaboul and not wilson.

i posted b4 the game that maybe kaboul should come in for him(no applause please)

and the reason i gave was the reason i think harry rested wilson..
kaboul was more equiped to deal with the threat that stoke give you at set pieces.

stoke were never gonna try and play through us,so wilson's strengths would have been nulified.
harry is far too long in the tooth to rest wilson if he didnt think kaboul's ariel power wouldnt have been more use to us at stoke.

We cannot have him miss the scum game. So in order for that not to happen he should pick up a late booking against Fulham so that he only misses Portsmouth at home and Sunderland away. He will be obviously missed by JJ and Thudd should be available. It will give Wilson a nice rest ready for wembley (hopefully) the scum Chelsea and United (4 massive games)

Redknapp said on five live that he couldn't risk Wilson as he's on 9 bookings and we have the FA Cup midweek.

I hope Wilson gets booked against Fulham. We can smash Pompey whoever is playing.

I agree, we should smash pompey anyway and tbf our ability to beat teams like that comes down to out ability to score a couple of goals, something that we seem able to do of late.

Its the difference between us and Villa :violin:, we can play and score, whereas they are very one dimensional and lack class!!!! hahaha!

yeah he did...

but thats called good management, telling a player he cant 'risk' him,
cos his so important not getting booked.
i would be sure its better than coming on five live saying he thinks our terminator is being 'rested' cos he thinks kaboul will do a better job against stoke.

harry is no mug...arm round wilson telling him a porkie or two wont hurt him:shrug:

If a player is on a run through to goal, and Wilson pulls him down to prevent the attack and get a yellow card, I'd be pleased with him.

He should go out and play as he normally would on Wednesday, now that probably means he'll get a yellow against Fulham!

I can see why people would kinda want him to get the 2 game suspension for the next 2 league games, and not for possibly a game against Chelsea/Arsenal/an FA Cup semi-final, etc. However, I'm sure we won't get an easy game at Sunderland too, we'll equally need him just as much for that game!

We did alright without him yesterday, and Stoke away is more difficult than Sunderland away imo.

More difficult, yes. But Sunderland we might need Palacios more. With Henderson, Cattermole, Cana, Steed, Reid, Campbell or whoever is playing, they'll knock the ball around and we'll need a presser.

Jenas might be fit but the last time he was asked to do that job was against Wolves. Where he was abysmal.

Anyway, you're right in essence, I'd hope we could get a good result at Sunderland without Wilson. Maybe if JD and Pav were still out, we could put Crouchy as lone man and Gudjohnsen behind doing that pressing role on the two Sundlund deep mids.

Bit of a way off to second-guess that, mind. :)

Yeah, I think Sunderland play it through the middle a lot more than Stoke, and you probably need some kind of clever plan to stop through balls to Bent, Wilson being our plan A. Sunderland might even be the single match in which the presence of Wilson would increase our probable points the most, if you take a pessimistic-ish view of our prospects in the sky 3/4 run.

Maybe Kaboul and Modric could come up with what's neccessary against Sunderland, but having watched them a couple of times in their recent revival, they look stronger overall than Stoke. If WP gets to the end of the Fulham match unbooked, we could actually rest him at home against Portsmouth in the league, which would mean that as the whistle blew at Craven Cottage he would only have two more matches to get through.

One of those would be in the cup against Portsmouth, who don't actually put enough heat on to demand fouling, and who we should have a couple of goals advantage on at least. I think if WP makes it through the quater final we should take our chances he'll manage the stadium of light too, although I voted for the deliberate yellow earlier.

Play him against fulham and pray he doesn't get booked. Rest him against Pompey. Play him against Sunderland and pray he doesn,t get booked. Then that is only 2 games to worry about right? Does 11 April count towards the bookings or is that when the period resets?

Don't think it's actually wiped out till midnight on the 11th/12th.

edit - not quite sure though, it wasn't the official rules i read, so maybe the 11th is ok

the safest way for him to get a booking is to take off his shirt or bury himself in the crowd for no reason near the end of the game. Id be happy for him to do that on wednesday.

There has been so much about this in the press over the past few days I think that it will take a lot for a ref to book him at the moment. Unless he does something stupid I think he will get through the next coulpe of games without getting booked and therefore not miss any games.

No. It's cowardly.

?

I didn't mean he should play any different. I am saying that because refs know he might miss games now because of the publicity that he might get some leeway. Also, don't forget he went from the beginning of the season till 31 Jan? without getting 5 bookings to earn an automatic 1 game ban to within a few weeks later he went up to 9 bookings and a potential 2 match ban. So maybe without being stupid he can last another couple of games so he doesn't get banned at all.
