What's new

So I just saw Sol Campbell...

Never understood why Sol Campbell received so much hate, maybe it was because I was fairly young at the time.

He left us for a better team whilst staying in the local area. When he played for us he was surrounded by very, very poor players on the whole. He left us to subsequently play in the greatest team of Premier League history.

Good luck with your job etc

For me it's because he wasn't honest, having come through the ranks and a leader, you would expect better behaviour, with his actions he also denied us a sizeable fee.

Had he been honest and said he was going to leave, best sell me to get something or I will run my contract down and leave for nothing, then it would have been ok.

It was never that he wanted to leave, it's the way he went about it...

Sheringham was an example of a player who left to win things, but did it in a better manner and was welcomed back

What a silly thing to say I hope you don't lose your job but if you did it your own fault .... why would you insult him publicly.

What you have to remember about Sol Campbell is that he honored his contract at Spurs, bottom line. He never did a Modric or Bertabtov and refused to played. Campbell served his time and left, the only hurtful thing was to leave for Arsenal any other club he'd be regarded as a Spurs legend

I understand where you are coming from! I have quite a few goon friends, and though we rib each other all the time, they know RSol is one subject that is totally off limits.

I can't listen to his lying Judas voice on the radio or look at his two faces on the TV.

It's not just that he left us for them (which is bad enough), it's the way he did it.

We could have sold him for cash the summer before his deal was up but he lead us to believe he'd sign a new deal all the time. As it got towards the end of the season in which his contract was running out he began to admit that he may not and would look for a new challenge abroad (Inter and Barca were supposed to be possible destinations I believe). The season came to an end and he hit us with the bombshell that he's joining them lot.

Rumours are that Wenger was in his ear and he knew full well what he was up to the whole time. He could've gone to so many other clubs rather than stab those in the back that made him who he was (footballer wise at least) but chose not to. **** of the highest order.

The only good thing to come out of all that is that Levy now gets players to sign new deals ASAP and long before their contracts expire so we've never been stung like that since and it's helped us get top dollar for Modric and Berbatov.

Not a lesson that seems to of taken hold at the wanderers

My fucking God, Spurs fans sticking up for Campbell - where will it end? I just tutted so ferociously that it hurt my tongue reading the aforementioned supportive-of-Sol posts.

Not sure he'll get much media work now after the Derbyday MOTD 2 car crash.

So you are more angry that he left on a free?

Would you rather he had a paddy and refused to play like Berbatov and Modric? I personally found their behaviour far more disrespectful than Sol Campbell joining Arsenal on a free.

Sol wanted to stay at Tottenham, let's be honest he should have left us years before he did. We had plenty of opportunity to get in good players around him and we failed to do that. I think Gareth Bale is in a very similar position this year, in terms of being that much better than everyone else but realising the potential of Spurs and ideally wanting to be part of that.

All i'm gonna say in this thread is, well done Luka for saying what you did, and i hope you don't get the sack. Try and explain it to your bosses, but if you do please try and explain the situation a bit better than some are doing on here, because he's being made to sound saintly and it's all fucking roses and shit... When basically it fucking wasn't!!

For fear of getting banned for saying something I should'nt, i'm heading out of this thread.

I was angry with how he left on a free.

Berbatov and Modric didn't really owe Spurs anything and we got good money for them. They were both arseholes but at least they were up front about what they were doing.

Spurs made Sol Campbell who he was (he was a bit dodgy in his early years as most young defenders are). If he'd been honest about wanting to leave then we could have sold him to someone else and got decent money for him. Instead, he lied about wanting to stay, knowing all the while he was going to going to stab us in the back and move on to our most bitter rivals whilst picking up his signing on fee.

RVP had the decency to admit he wasn't going to extend his contract with the goons so they got to sell him on. If Sol had done the same, or at the very least moved to someone that wasn't Arsenal, I'd have no axe to grind with him. (not that I really do now - life's too short for hating)

Absolutely agree, it wasn't that he went it was the manner in which he left that was so dishonourable and it was compounded by where he went.

Other players have gone to the Gooners, notably Pat Jennings, with no such reaction.

I wasn't going to, but I just can't resist. Just two months before the end of that season he was asked on national television if he was going to leave Tottenham. He responded by saying "Why should I? I'm the captain of Spurs etc etc and more bollocks".

We could have also sold him to United 1 year earlier for £12m but he stated he wanted to stay with Spurs and we were his club.

The last game of the season he walked around the pitch in his suit accepting the applause of the crowd and the songs asking him to stay and didn't skulk around in the background - like the low life he was (see I can't help it) should have done.

2 weeks later he's signed for that other bunch, knowing all along that he had screwed our club, but more importantly our fans. He still deserves and deserved everything he got.

It was the way he (and they) did it, and not because it was him or them per se. I hope you enjoy your money, success and medals Sol. Forgive him, me? Never.

As Sol Campbell is my favourite player of all time, Even wrote him a letter asking him to stay back in the day... Oh the pain of losing him but in reality you cannot blame him for moving up in the footballing world.

So sorry I had to dislike :sorry:

It was the underhanded way he moved on a free, that means he can be blamed.

It's not just that he left us for them (which is bad enough), it's the way he did it.

This, this, this a million times.

It's not that he left for a better club.

It's not even that he left for the scum.

It's not even that he ran his contract down so that he could cash in on wages, despite how much we'd invested in his development.

Okay, it is that last one a little bit. And maybe a little of the second.

But mainly it's that he lied and lied and fucking lied about it right until the end, giving every indication that he was going to re-sign, leading the fans on - because he was too much of a fucking coward to admit he was planning to **** us over.

The man was our proto-Ledley. He had come through the ranks and developed into a top class player at a time when we were struggling. He was a talisman and a hero, and he was Spurs through and through.

So he led us all into the woods, whispering tenderly in our ears about champagne and picnic hampers. We were worried, because the close-knit branches were making it dark, and we didn't know our way back. But he reassured us, promised it would be all right. "Trust me" he said "I'd never hurt you guys". We were all uneasy about it, but he'd just softly place a finger over our lips and whisper "Shhhh... I love you".

When we finally reached the clearing in the middle, he whipped out a kitchen knife and viciously stabbed us in every vital organ, pissed in the open wounds, and then showed us photos of the dismembered corpses of everyone we'd ever loved.

FFS. I expect the "Why the hate? He just left to further his career" line from fans of other clubs. But if you're gonna call yourself Spurs, then at least acquaint yourself with the real reasons why he incites such venom from those that once sang his name.

Literally just walked past him on a street with my boss, head of HR and several co-workers, and I flipped out a little and yelled 'Judas' down the street at him.

Bosses not impressed...

Depending on your job, it's highly unlikely that a sacking for that would stand up at tribunal.

Are you unionised? If so, and you get any comeback off this, then get hold of your rep pronto. If not, then there are other legal advice avenues available.

Life's waaaay too short to hold onto any emotions for the way a footballer choose to leave our team and play for another. Pfff, yeah he was a dick about it, so we booed him whenever he played, that's all part of the pantomime of football. However, roaring abuse at the guy in the street, very sad.

He played over 300 times for the club. Gave 100% every single time. Did more for us than 100s of others. You don't have to give him any credit for that if you don't want but at least don't abuse the guy over it. Move on.

Transfer fees went crazy around the time he left and Thuram for whom iirc was 29 at the time was sold for €41m, so he would have easily fetched £25m
