We have to see this out tomorrow, no excuses. Boucher, like Haddin last year, should be the last key wicket. Great spell by Broad.

Zing.

Fantastic result. Hope it can continue into the next test.

Yep this result shouldn't be underestimated even though two of SA's best batsmen gave their wicket away so cheaply. Swann and Broad were fantastic though I wish the latter would bowl fuller more often. Cape Town will be tough and it will be interesting what SA do with Ntini, De Wet is clearly on better form but politics could be an issue (though do Prince and Duminy not count?).

My uncle's flying out tonight for the test, bastard.

In 12 months Swanny has gone from test hopeful to officially the best ranked spinner in the world, and in 3rd place overall. Fantastic.

England have always lacked a quality spinner who bowled to take wickets rather than hold up an end and now in Swanny they have one.

He reminds me of Dominic Cork with his attitude, however far less arrogant and actually better at what he does.

Long live the Swann.

great series for Eng so far. saved the first test with jimmy and swann putting on a big rearguard partnership. then winning by innings+90. i didn't think SA could lose to anyone by that margin let alone at home to england.

Decent first day but Swanny ahould have swallowed that chance early doors!

Hate watching Kallis, but he is a class act.

I think we are on top because if Kallis is out, that should be it and when Steyn gets out wickets may well fall early on. Why wasn't Morkel in first? I hate to agree with Boycott- it's a prett simple point really- but we should just look to bowl it simpler and not try too many shortish balls; just a good length around off stump, that's how we got a lot of wickets in the last Test and how you test batsmen. It's the McGrath style.

Yep that Swann catch was a dolly but Smith was out shortly after, shame Collingwood cannot slip field. He is easily our best there.

Very professional job with the ball, shame about Pietersen yet again!

What's everyone's thoughts on Trott?

I like Trott. Never going to be world class but does a good job. Was a bit of a cheap dismissal today.

Gritty from Cook and Bell so far, but they need to hang in for a long time.

I like Trott but he is no flair player and seems to have to play himself into a good innings sometimes which makes it more likely he will get out early on. A disappointing end to Cook's innings but the game is very even. I will have to leave it there for the day and do some work. God I wish I were in Cape Town.

Pretty much how I feel about Trott, he seems to have a decent technique but not quite the extra little bit to really make the position his own.

Still think KP should be number 3.

I've been most impressed with Trott to be honest.

Came in at an awkward time in The Ashes and did the business

Trott is a tidy, unspectacular player. But he could be the Dravid / Kallis type player that goes about business at his own pace that we need. I rate him.

I don't think we need to be thinking about changing any of the lineups really, but I have always thought KP was better at number three. It's good that two of the strugglers Bell and Cook are doing better and though I agree with what Boycott said about a lot of his problems being mental, not technical- that's half the requirement of a Test cricketer- not to give away your wicket and to be strong mentally, like S Waugh and 99% of Aussies!

Think we can hang on? Collingwood, Bell, Prior, Broad, Swann and Onions over 62 overs? Need some big performances in there, but at least we do bat deep these days. Trott was done by an absolute beaut this morning but you feel we have to try and hang in without losing a wicket for at least an hour.

No, well maybe but I doubt Bell has the mental strength and it's not really in the others' games to hang around and we just have Colly and it only takes one great ball, one stupid mistake or a piece of luck a la Anderson's wicket for us to fall. We have lost too many wickets already and we really lost it when we let Amla and Smith get such a huge score. I am not sure even the new ball will make a massive difference, it's just the time and pressure we need to beat.

On to Jo'burg but never say never.
