I am somewhat inclined to believe, with a name like Averof, he didn't do it out of racism though.
Can Averofs not be racist..?

Nah mate. It’s only Dave, Tony, Trevor and Adolf. Can Averofs not be racist..?
That's the spirit, spoken like a social warrior.I'm a little bit baffled as to why people are sticking up for this racist moron. Are some people really suggesting that there are mitigating circumstances because he happens to enjoy watching the same football team? The pictures of a banana skin laying on the turf were beamed around the world and this guy has shamed our club by his actions.
Fuck him, and fuck anyone who tries to justify this type of behaviour.
This narrow minded way of thinking is one of the many reasons why racism is so hard to eradicateI am somewhat inclined to believe, with a name like Averof, he didn't do it out of racism though.

There is a strange collective mindset taking hold in Britain at the moment, where we've convinced ourselves that we as a nation are the most racist, homophobic, sexist and bigoted nation on the planet, and so someone with a foreign-sounding name must be a non-racist because he doesn't sound British.
Which, in itself, is sanctimonious at best.
Really fucking weird tbh.
He's an idiot but how can the court know for a fact and decide that it was a racist act just from that incident alone? The UK judicial system really needs an overhaul. People are getting tried and convicted for twitter remarks, youtube videos etc. It's proper 1984 scary.
You just argued my case for me, I am doneI don't think that's quite right. I think you're conflating various opposing pathologies in the culture.
Tottenhamattspur's statement might be wrong (ie. that a cypriot may have been a racist supporter in the 80s, and that they may have thrown someone elses banana skin in those days too etc.) but I don't think its unreasonable to think that this doesn't fit the type and give more creedence to his protestations of innocence.
I just assumed rightly or wrongly, that the guy had likely suffered racism himself.
It's obviously not impossible to be racist if you're not white. It's far less likely though, especially if you yourself have suffered as a result of it.
The fact someone has given a first half account of what happens and confirmed the chap is a middle aged Cypriot who's not racist and has been believed by the police and the club, means my comments were fairly accurate.
No, he hasn't. He was found guilty of throwing a missile an act which was found to have a racial element but strictly speaking he's been found guilty of throwing a missile. The racial element (which he denies) cost him £100 on top, basically, for being so unthinkingly stupidHe has gone to court and been found guilty of a racist act.

Panteli was handed a four-year football banning order after pleading guilty to throwing a missile.
He was also fined £500, which includes a £100 uplift for the racial element, and told to pay £135 in costs.
After being identified on CCTV and detained by a steward Mr Panteli said: "It wasn't a racial thing it just happened", the court heard.
Leila Rasool, mitigating, said Panteli had been going to Tottenham games for 50 years without incident and he was of "exemplary character".
She told the court: "He has not been charged for any racially aggravated public order offence.
"He was arrested for that but no action has been taken in respect of that matter. Police directly told Mr Panteli they accepted his account and didn't think there was a racial element."
To be honest it's hardly a stretch thinking a player throwing a banana at a player is with racist intentions. He may or may not be a racist, but at the end of the day, picking up and throwing anything at a player is stupid and reckless, but a banana, utterly deplorable. The bloke deserves a 4 year ban just for being so thick and idiotic.
Do we expect the courts to take his word for it that throwing a banana at a group of players containing black players was just an innocent non racist mistake?
It's a banana skin and there was a black player.
