The last player I allowed myself to become ecstatic about was Korsten. Made an effing beauty of a start as well. Then got knackered almost straight away.

I've never allowed myself to become that emotionally attached since. I am a lone wolf, destined to walk alone.

I agree with many of the names mentioned, but I'd also add Defoe.

I honestly was genuinely excited when he joined us from the spammers as I was already a bit of a fan. He scored on his debut and did pretty well for the rest of the season as far as I can remember. I'm sure many of us can remember what Spurs were like back then, so I was really hopeful that Defoe would prove to be the cutting edge we badly needed.

He's certainly an incredibly frustrating player, but I'll never forget the (justified) excitement I felt when he signed for us, and it still depresses me a little bit when I hear or read the hatred directed towards him.

There was an interview with him recently where he talked about having a list of Tottenham's top goal scorers of all time stuck up on his mirror, and how he loved being able to cross people off when he'd passed their total. That to me says everything about the man - single minded, determined, selfishly looking to put himself on the score sheet when it's easier to set someone up instead....but ultimately driven by a passionate effort to write himself into Tottenham's history books. He wants to be a Spurs legend, and that means that sometimes his drive and confidence can be detrimental to the club - but on many other occasions it's Spurs that benefit.

Sorry...went on a bit of a Defoe rant!

Helder Postiga "The next coming" what a fucking let down
At least we got dear old Pedro when we sent Postgoat back to Porto. To think that he was still one of, if not the, main striker for Portugal up until the last Euros.

I still love Postiga and I used to name my DiabloII character as Helder Postiga.... :(

In recent times it was VDV by far...after years of feeling like we missed out on certain players due to no CL he was the first signing that seemed to signal we had finally arrived.

David's definitely worth a mention too and for me the second signing of Jurgen is up there. I was a bit too young to remember him signing first time around but was sooooo excited when he came back

Klinsmann, Ginola and Davids.

Other than that, in recent years I haven't been excited about anyone but have been very happy to see the likes of Modric, VDV, Vertonghen, Lloris, Sandro, Dembele and Holtby join the club (albeit 2 leaving). Very positive signings.

Across the years I was excited when the following joined Spurs - Jimmy Greaves, Alan Gilzean, David Ginola, Edgar Davids, Jurgen Klinsmann.

Davids - Saw him turn Barca around and then he came to us. One of the most recognisable European players of the early 00s!!
Klinsmann - Obvious. Completely out of the blue. Jurgen. F*cking. Klinsmann.
Rebrov - Was so excited. Stuck by him all the way through his Spurs time. Think Hoddle killed whatever confidence the lad had and he never recovered.

But VDV - I hate to admit this. I wasn't in awe when we signed him. Didn't rate him and told my mates at training the day it happened that i didn't thik we needed him . . . .how wrong i was. Fell in love with him in that Villa game!

Showing your age there, mate! ;)

Christ, I was about 9 when Klinsmann joined and that had me bouncing up and down.

off top of my head

Ardiles - Villa Before my time
Waddle before my time when he signed
Gascoigne too young to really understand the significance when he signed
Klinsmann This was amazing, especially after his personally successful World cup
Lineker This was immense
Rebrov I was skeptical about him and wasn't sure he'd be a success
Bale I was happy but not over joyed, probably due to my age but also because he wasn'f a Jurgen signing
Berbatov I'd never heard of him but thought his youtube clips looked good
Modric I knew him to be a good player but wasn't sure how well he would do
Van der Vaart Was probably the most exicted I'd been since Jurgen but I was pissed off we hadn't bought a striker still

Klinsmann is the signing I was most excited by by some distance

No Davids on the list? He was passed it yes but the biggest name we had signed since Klinsmann (bigger than VDV)

Some other more embarrassing signings that got me excited due to the stupidity of youth include......

Andy Gray, Ruel Fox, Chris Armstrong, Andy Sinton, Jason Dozzell.......I can't even bring myself to finish this list

Ginola and a certain Ramon Vega, remember that lighting up the common room for some reason?

in addition to a number of names already posted, a deal that stands out for me was when we got simon davies and mathew etherington from (i think) peterborough. for some reason, i was convinced that it was a cracking deal at the time, and that those two would go on to great things for us.* rather lean times, in retrospect.

*and davies would've, i suspect, if not for the injury.

Aside from the predominantly listed ones; Vertonghen, Dembele, Lloris, Holtby, Sandro (had never seen him play but he's Brazilian and I'm superficial), Kanoute and when we resigned Sheringham (was my hero as a kid). That's all I can think of, maybe I'm easily excited.

Not sure anyone will beat Klinsmann

I was in France on holiday with my parents, grabbed a paper in the hotel and it had the infamous 'handshake on the yacht' photo. I couldn't believe it

Seemed so unlikely. We were so beneath him at the time. Then he started off better than we could ever have hoped too
