Interesting, spaces for:

Oscar Jansson, John Bostock, Dean Parret, Danny Rose, Kieran McKenna and Andy Barcham (none of whom qualify automatically)

but not for:

Ben Alnwick, Paul Stalteri, Ricardo Rocha, Hossam Ghaly, Kevin Prince-Boateng or Adel Taarabt.

Eddie - thanks for that. Here's the link:

http://www.uefa.com/footballeurope/club=1652/competition=14/index.html

Taarabt's exclusion for the likes of McKenna who's been injured for ages is a shocker. It suggests Ramos has lost patience with, and confidence in, Adel. We need to loan him out, and get him playing.

Btw McKenna & Barcham both came through our Academy and have been at the club for years, so I'm surprized they don't qualify as homegrown players. But then I've never really understood the UEFA "B" List...

O'Hara too must qualify as homegrown.

I hate to post the following as it's scum-related, but it seems that clubs mess about with Player List A and B for strategic reasons. For instance, Fabregas is on the goon's Player List B:

-----------------------------------

The definition of homegrown is to have been registered for 3 years by the age of 21. At least 4 must be club trained, but the remainder can be association trained.

According to Sky Sports this morning, Arsenal only registered 5 homegrown players - the rules actually state that you can only have 17 non-homegrown players on the A list.

The rules also allow you to have an unlimited number of players on List B, provided they are born on or after 1/1/87, and have been registed for at least 2 years.
A number of GOON players on the B List could have qualified as homegrown - Theo, Djourou, Cesc would have made it a full 8.

Clubs can also register 3 new players before February, as long as they don't go over the existing quota (17 non-homegrown, 25 total) - if they do, another player will have to be removed.

e.g. If Liverpool signed another Spaniard in the next window, they would have to remove a non-homegrown player to make room in the squad. I guess that is why Arsenal have not filled player list A.

O'Hara too must qualify as homegrown.

Best to think of it as 4 lists:
1) Up to 17 players with no restrictions
2) 4 players of any age that are club trained (3 yrs in the club before turning 21)
3) 4 players of any age that are association trained (3 yrs in the country before turning 21)
4) An unlimited number of players that are born after 1 Jan 1987 and that have been registered with the club for at least two years

* You can replace any number of players from list 1 with ones that qualify for list 2 or 3
* You can replace any number of players from list 3 with ones that qualify for list 2

Our first team squad is:

Type 1
Gomes
Sánchez
Jansson
Hutton
Assou-Ekotto
Zokora
Gilberto
Modric
Dos Santos

Type 2
King
O'Hara
McKenna
Barcham

Type 3
Bale
Gunter
Dawson
Woodgate
Bentley
Huddlestone
Jenas
Bostock
Parrett
Rose
Bent
Campbell

Type 4 is mainly academy players although does include Aaron Lennon.

Basically though, Eddie echoes what I put in my thread on this topic a few days back. We had space in the squad for additional players that face no restrictions but Ramos obviously thinks Parrett is more likely to be of value than Taarabt... Considering that, of our 7 subs tonight, only one was an attacking player I would question that wisdom.

The other interesting one is Jansson in goal, who takes up one of the Type 1 spots which could easily have gone to a Rocha, Stalteri or Taarabt even though Button qualifies as a Type 4 player.

Yeah, because we're really gonna need Hossam Ghaly and Ben Alnwick in the group stages.

No surprise to me, the likes of rocha, ghaly, stalteri and alnwick are not wanted and ramos clearly does not rate boateng or taarabt, neither do I, I think they're both rubbish. The latter being a show-poney with no actual quality.

Some of those lads have been doing it week in week out in the reserves, so it's no big shock.

jondesouza - thanks for that. It was generally very helpful, but I still don't quite get the List A and List B. Fabregas (on the goons' B List) presumably qualifies under both your categories 2 & 3 - but enough of that.

In terms of our players selected, I agree that Jansson is clearly very highly rated, especially as he's a year-and-a-half younger than Button.

Boateng's omission was fairly predictable, but I still think Taarabt's was a shocker. The only conclusion I can draw is that Ramos has clearly lost patience with Adel, and will look to develop players like Rose, Bostock & Parrett ahead of him.

As for the lack of strikers, having spent most of last season playing as a CM for the reserves, Rose appears to have been shifted up front for the reserves. So, with Pekhart on loan, if Rose impresses in training and for the ressies, maybe he'll be our fourth or fifth choice striker.

I don't know why Taarabt's omission should be a shocker. According to the last ressies report on SO he was doing his usual—showboating most of the way through to the detriment of the team. He won't listen to the coaches, or the handful of fans who regularly scream, 'Pass the fucking ball, you twat!' (surely his English is good enough by now to understand that), goes his own sweet way and produces fuck all. Give me a player like O'Hara who has just a fraction of the skills but plays 100% for the team any day. Much the same way as I prefer a comparative journeyman who does what he does well, doesn't glare or sulk or flap his arms when a pass goes more than two feet astray of him to a genius who most of the time appears not to give a shit.

But SS57, has O'Hara ever won a free kick that we scored a meaningless goal from, 2 years ago?

No? Well, there you go.

Wait, hang on...

He has been one of our most exciting young players though and certainly has more experience than some of the players picked ahead of him. While he's never looked the finish product, it would be far from unreasonable to think that he'd be making progress by now, or least that he's still young enough to be blooded further at the highest level. Anyone who's not surprised to see him missing from the squad (ignoring the fact he hasn't been given a squad number this season, which I guess pointed in that direction) is silly, and anyone who's not disappointed to not see him there, if only because it means he hasn't developed as hoped, is even sillier still.

That list shows how bloody light on players we are. I'm all for the youth being brought through but if we hit a bad patch of injuries we could be very, very stuffed.

The only kid with any experience is Bostock & I doubt we can count on Tron & Pekhart as they're on loan.

I believe I read that we can add but not remove to this list, though? If anyone can confirm that would be cool.

There was also more than a whisper that we wanted to send Adolf Treebeard out on loan.

If those two are correct or even semi-likely, then it would explain everything in one. Even if we intended to keep him and mould him into a Superstar, it goes without saying that he's more likely to do that by playing regualr footy at Stoke or wherever than being 23rd choice for our UEFA Cup squad.

Sorry, should have made that clear. My Types 1,2 and 3 equate to List A and Type 4 is List B. Essentially, Fabregas (and Lennon for us) are both in that latter category.
