Saturday's Under 21 match report from Ray Lo at SO.

Interesting team changes resulting from Harry Kane going on loan, with Ryan Mason resuming the position where he was verey effective in the Academy (verging on a scoring rate of a goal a game) as No 10 behind Obika, but not on score sheet this time.

Other team changes were that Stewart and Veljkovic both started, resuming their very effective NextGen partnership at Centre Back, whilst Ceballos and Parrett also came in.

Interesting. So Pritchard played alongside Parrett in the 2 of the 4-2-3-1, and scored.

Maybe Ceballos was injured pre-season but he's back starting now after the alleged Real Madrid interest.

Smith played again at FB, so presumably we're keeping him this season rather than loaning him out, and he'll get chances in the Carling Cup and perhaps the Europa League. With Rose loaned, presumably our LB cover is Verts, Naughton and Smith.

No Carroll - suspect he was nineteenth man for the first team.

Has anyone explained to Tim that your are actually allowed five subs? That is two games running we have only had four - and in the previous game the U21s just borrowed the U18 bench.

A bit disappointing that we have yet to record a win.

SUNDERLAND - LADS DENIED BY LATE PENALTY
Posted 01 September 2012 1:17pm
Our Under-21s were denied victory by a late penalty as it ended 2-2 against Sunderland in the Barclays U21 Premier League on Saturday.
We led twice at Spurs Lodge but were hauled back on both occasions by the Black Cats.
Jon Obika and Cristian Ceballos went close in the early stages and Ryan Noble fired wide for Sunderland before the opening goal on 40 minutes.
It was a fine goal as well as Alex Pritchard collected the ball on the edge of the box, nipped inside the defender and fired past Ben Wilson in the Sunderland goal.
Ceballos soon had another chance but shot at Wilson after good work from Yago Falque.
Unfortunately, the lead only last five minutes as Sunderland levelled before the break. David Vaughan's free-kick was met by
Jordan Laidler, who struck the crossbar, but David Ferguson was there to head home.
u21s_sund_h430.jpg
Into the second half and Pritchard had another striker at goal before Falque restored our lead, firing home from 10 yards after Nathan Byrne's cross fell into his path.
This led to our best spell as Ryan Mason's free-kick was saved by Wilson and the goalkeeper then got down to save a Ceballos effort from Falque's set-up. We then had a goal disallowed by the linesman's flag as Ceballos followed in Pritchard's shot.
Falque's effort was deflected just wide and Mason then lashed over from 20 yards.
However, when a third goal seem likely, Sunderland found an equaliser. Billy Knott crossed to the near post, Pritchard slid in with Mikael Mandron and was judged to have brought the Sunderland man down. Adam Reed made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Mason curled a final effort just wide in the 82nd minute as the honours ended even.
Spurs (4-2-3-1):
Archer;
Smith, Stewart, Veljkovic, Byrne;
Mason, Parrett;
Falque, Pritchard, Ceballos;
Obika.
Unused subs: Ekong, Munns, Miles, Dombaxe.
Sunderland: Wilson, Laing, Adams, Vaughan (Knott, 46), Egan, Ferguson, Reed, Gorrin (Mandron, 75), Noble (Deacon, 67), Laidlee, Lynch.

Re loans, I am surprised that Archer is not on a loan at a League 1 or 2 club - with Miles and Vigoroux doing goalkeeping duties for under 21 and NextGen matches respectively, as below them (in age) is Billy Granger and then the 2 below in Academy Year 1 seem to be quite talented. So Granger, Luke McGee and Liam Priestly are all potentially competing for the under 18 slot - and even below that Harry Vos has been involved with E u 16's and last season made an appearance for Spurs u 18, whilst this season being GK fir Spurs u 16's, so no shortage of good young goalkeepers it would appear.

Smith I think is staying for first team cover duties, and quite possibly Europa League. He tore up League 1 for a season and a half before a few appearances in the Championship for Leeds (before they sent back all loanees after a change in manager), so unless there is a loan to a Premiership club think he would get some action at Spurs covering left and right back.

Most of the others I see as staying at Spurs rather than going on loan - in part to ensure we can run an u 21 side, and maybe because talented footballers such as Mason and Parrett have not had great times on loan for assorted reasons, There is an argument that someone such as Alex Pritchard could do well on loan (and Spurs have plenty of midfielders to cover his absence - although these would not be of the same quality as Pritchard).

I am still a bit mystified by the ITK on Ceballos going to Real Madrid (Spurs picked him up after he left Barcelona) as although talented I did not see him take a game by the scruff of the neck last season - but that could have been him adjusting to faster more physical football. It will be interesting to see how he gets on this season, and whether simillar ITK emerges in January.

Swindon would be a good loan for Pritchard, with Bostock there already it would help him settle.

SPURS XI 6-0 WYCOMBE WANDERERS

Posted 04 September 2012 5:38pm

Andros Townsend, Ryan Mason, Jon Obika and Jack Munns were all on the scoresheet as a Spurs XI side hammered Wycombe Wanderers 6-0 at Spurs Lodge on Tuesday.

Townsend terrified the Wanderers defence in the first half, and with Tom Huddlestone controlling the midfield we created chance after chance.

Mason put the lads ahead in the 14th minute with a low volley after Wycombe failed to clear a cross into the box and Obika doubled the lead soon after with a close range finish following a superb run and ball into the box from Townsend on the left wing.

Midway through the first half, Mason made it 3-0 from the penalty spot after Obika was brought down when through on goal after an inch perfect through ball from the impressive Townsend.

The scoreline reflected a dominant first half performance in which Wycombe were given very little time on the ball.

Wanderers did improve in the second half and forced Miles into a couple of diving saves, but we extended our lead in the 69th minute after a teasing Nathan Byrne cross evaded Obika in the box only to be bundled in by a Wycombe defender.
Jack Munns got his reward for a working tirelessly thoughtout the match when he turned and shot across the goalkeeper late on to make it 5-0, before Obika scored his second with a low finish after being played through by Huddlestone to seal an impressive victory.

Spurs XI: Miles; Naughton; Byrne; Ekong; Dawson; Dombaxe; Mason; Huddlestone; Obika; Munns; Townsend.
Goals: Mason (14 & 26), Obika (24 & 90), Own goal (69), Munns (81)

Good run out by the developmemt squad augmented by Naughton, Dawson and Huddlestone getting a few minutes under their belts. Good to see Mason back in scoring form - as well as Obika

Anyone else notice a slight flaw in the goalscorers in this report?

Anyone else notice a slight flaw in the goalscorers in this report?

Yeah...it only describes 5 goals and none of them was scored by Townsend who is desscribed in the introduction as one of the goalsscorers.
So, either the OG was from a Townsend ball and he is being creditied with it, or we did win 6 - 0, and they have missed off a Townsend goal.

Always interesting to speculate on the make-up of these mix-and-match XIs. Dawson, as a non-playing reserve needs game time, as do Naughton, Huddlestone and Townsend as benchwarmers. Similarly Miles, Ekong and Munns missed out on selection for Saturday’s U21 game. Byrne and Obika did play on Saturday, but are presumably the only available leftback and striker. More arbitrary is the selection of Mason, the U21 captain; we have young attacking midfielders coming out of our ears so did someone particularly want to look at him? Dombaxe has been playing for the U18s so his inclusion is presumably a recognition of his performances.

Then there are those who might have been expected to be get a run out but did not: Cudicini, who it might be thought would benefit from a game more than Miles; Carroll conspicuously absent from both squads at the weekend; and Jenas and Bentley both of whom we failed to shift during the window. Carroll might be injured, but I wonder if Cudicini and Bentley might not already be half way out the door on Championship loans. That leaves Jenas: I cannot see him being prepared to drop down a level, and he needs the game time, so the obvious conclusion is that he is injured – putting a different perspective Huddlestone’s apparent promotion to the bench at his expense on Saturday.

I don't think Jenas is injured...I think he's broken :eek:
