We arguably had the best team, first 11, in the league but didn't win the league due to squad depth. Off the back of that many of us would have hoped to build a stronger squad and keep our best players. I know we probably will strengthen before the window closes, but we really can't afford to lose ground in the first few games, so the lack of activity is disappointing. We were woeful against city, so desperately need a performance today.

I take your point, but I'm not sure it was anywhere unanimously agreed that we had the best covered squad. I heard a lot of people say we had arguably the best starting 11, but that we didn't have a lot of strength in depth when a few injuries rolled around.

I don't think we have excellent cover for every position: Janssen is far from excellent cover for a striker who's apparently going to be playing every game again this season (until he gets injured), and I really don't think we have proper cover for Eriksen. Those two are crucial.

Surely we can't be relying on GKN and Sissoko to step up.

I don't want to get into a long debate on this, but we need to have a bit of perspective. We had Kane out for months and with the team we fielded in his absence, we barely missed him. If that's not squad depth, then I don't know what it. Yes, we could have better cover than Jansen, but again, not to have a huge debate on it, the player we would ideally have would cost over 40 million as a proven striker with a proven goalscoring record in a top European league, demand 100,000+ a week all whilst being willing to play (frankly) barely at all. Jansen coming good in his ( after let's not forget, only his first season in England), like it or not, is arguably our best and most realistic option. BUT, we also have Son. We have a squad full of players who can play multiple positions.

I would love a few more players in, speacialists in certain areas, but I'm not for a second concluding that because we don't have them secured we have somehow, suddenly, over the course of a few months become a shallow, thread-bare squad.

It's just factually incorrect.

Eric Dier & Dele Alli has to stop playing with themselves & start playing well on the field. The two have had a poor preseason till date. Need to up their game.

Dream match for me. Spurs and Juve together. Hope I only see this is in a friendly and not the CL.

Juve lads training right in front of me. Douglas is tiny! Buffon is such a legend.

The idea that our only options for a second striker are Janssen or a £40m/£100k pw striker is a false dichotomy. I think there's probably a striker out there who can do more than score penalties but doesn't cost the world.

Nonetheless, I agree it's not the best place for a long discussion, so thanks for the short chat :)

Mate are you purposely ignoring our CL exploits last season? Or shall we say lack of a CL. We were awful in Europe because we had a terribly thin squad its that simple. Our squad is not good enough to compete for both CL and the league. That pathetic u17s bench against Juve today just goes to prove it. A few injuries and we are fielding a kindergarten group on our subs bench.

Nail on the head.

Reality, we've only lost one player from the squad that took us so close last year. Walker.
However, we got found wanting at times for depth, and we've now lost a couple more players to injury, hence we're looking down to the bare bones.
Hopefully that's the eye opener to bring in a couple of extra bodies of the calibre that wipe out he drop off between 1st 11 and the rest.
That's our deficiency, depth. We need to address that. Our rivals have addressed some of their weaknesses, and arguably look stronger. We need to keep pace to stay on the front foot.

#THFC: Lloris (C); Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Dembele; Sissoko, Eriksen, Dele; Kane. #COYS

Sissoko... wow...

Ugh Dier in the midfield again. This better not be how we play this year. He needs to be in the 3 in the back. I know Davies and Tripps aren't the speed merchants that Rose and Walker were/are but he is not a midfielder.
