We more than deserved the win for the second half performance. It might not have been the most pretty but the players gave maximum effort imo. The only chances Sporting had in the second half were counter attacks, their coach couldn't even watch ffs but apparantly we were shit according to some.

Yea I’m starting to think this is why I feel differently about football the last few years not just because of the 3 managers we’ve hired and their styles of play but VAR and the way football is now you can’t celebrate goals it’s ridiculous. Isn't it pretty self-explanatory? If the player is ahead of the ball when the ball is played they're offside.

You could pass it backward and a player in an already offside position moves backward to get it. If they do they're offside...

I stand corrected- apparently the ball doesn’t have to be played forward to be offside. What matters is the ”intention” of the defender deflecting it to the receiver. Very strange, if you ask me. What does any intention have to do with it, and how is it determined?

I think you now have to make an attempt to play the ball.

So no intention with the ball headed at him.

I am pretty sure, by the letter of the law, it was offside.

It looked like Var measured Kane with the ball and when it was played Kane was ahead of the ball. That is the definition of offside. The contact with the defender is irrelevant since he did not intentionally play it, and the direction of the ball from Royal is also irrelevant. It where Kane was when the ball was played.

It wasn't clear that Kane was ahead of the ball imo.

It would just be nice to see what we can do without the handbrake on. I know it can’t always be that gung ho but the second half shows how we can play when not completely restricted by tactical instruction. There has to be a happy medium there somewhere.

Bentancur is just a quality player; by far our best player this season. I thought Doherty made some great forward runs and I thought that Gil looked lively when he came on. Other than that, really disappointing. We now can’t rest players in Marseille, which would have been a huge bonus.

It was offside but one of those where the margin of error and the ricochet etc that leads to it mean it’s reasonable to feel like that’s not what the offside rule exists to prevent. As for the issue of how precise the timing of the image has to be in that scenario, that’s the biggest argument why such marginal calls should be deemed onside but UEFA/IFAB doesn’t want to engage in that discussion.

We weren’t good enough for the first 80 mins. Before Bentancur’s header we looked short of ideas and our crossing was dreadful all night. If we’re to get something in Marseilles we need to be better and be better from the very first whistle. I’m not holding my breath.
