I didn't celebrate the goal. That's the true damage of VAR.

It was never going to be a satisfactory conclusion for me. Either not get to celebrate a 95th minute winner or see a crucial goal ruled out.

I know there are people out there stronger than me who can celebrate no matter what. But I just can't overule that pessimistic part of my brain.

At least the VAR decision and everyones understanding of the rules gives us something else to argue about this week

I think you now have to make an attempt to play the ball.

So no intention with the ball headed at him.
Maybe I’m stupid, but I still see a massive grey area there. Do you have to make an attempt to play the ball with your feet or head? No sane defender in this defenders situation would not make an attempt to play the ball out to a corner in that situation.

No. There is nothing in the law about the direction of the ball.

Typically when a ball is played backwards the player is behind the ball and thus not offside. In this case Kane was ahead of the ball and, sadly, offside.
Correct in the fact that direction of ball is irrelevant if player in offside position.

But watching it again and again, I still don't see it conclusively that Kane was ahead.

Also debatable if the defender played at it deliberately and hence would have played him on anyway if adjudged to do so.

Pedro Mendes wishes VAR was around when his goal from the half way line was disallowed against Utd years ago after Carroll scooped the ball out of the net despite it being a yard over the line

That's what VAR should be for. Not look for toenails offsides or if someone was a kneecap offside 2 minutes earlier in the build up etch.

Just because it hits an opposition player it doesn't mean it's automatically onside.

I think he was onside but your point isn't relevant.
@glacierSpurs what are you disagreeing with? They are the laws of the game mate. They might be stupid and make little sense, but none the less they are the laws.

I wish we played with a greater sense of urgency more frequently. I think we are way too calm for long stretches and we should be playing with urgency until we get a lead.

Kane was onside because the ball came off the defender. Emerson was onside when the ball was played even though in an offside position when he headed it. That was a goal.

Exactly the same boat, it looked too close/ offside to get my hopes up

Yeah it looked to me like the defender is desperately trying to get at the ball and clear it

I'm amazed how many football experts we have on this forum that don't know the laws of the game.

It's not taken any part of Emerson's body. It's the position of the ball.

In the which case you can see why they’ve given it offside. What we need to remember is that the viewing we see can be distorted whereas VAR will assess multiple angles that we don’t get to see which in this case shows it was offside.

What this thread proves is that a lot of people don't understand the offside rule.

The goal was marginally offside and was called as such.

You can argue that three minutes of checking a marginal decision isn't the spirit of the game but as both the offside and var rules stand at the moment it was the correct call.

Still fucking hurts though.

Overall though we got drawn in the easiest CL group we could’ve hoped for pre draw. So far we really haven’t done enough to deserve to be going through. To deserve it now we need to go and not get beat away at a team 5th in the French league. For a PL Top4 club that should be doable, if we can’t we’re clearly not worthy of still being in this tournament.

same here, but i celebrated when i saw the ball go back and from a sporting player to Kane as in the PL at least this is a new situation.

he had a lot more control over what he was doing. Think Conte will have liked his performance
Yep tonight he looked like a decent player. Before that he’s been too lightweight and lots of energy and giving the ball away a lot like a headless chicken, tonight much much more controlled.

Been waiting to see him play more like this, if Gil can play like that for 70+Mins he at least deserves to start over Moura.
