Why isn't he starting for ROI?

He didn't get any minutes in their draw with New Zealand despite Ferguson not starting.
Good question. He wasn't really starting for Excelsior until recently but has been contributing well off the bench. Maybe the new ROI manager will take a closer look. Here's hoping.

Veliz, Donley and Dorrington in though. Not sure who else could be in and if we're honest, its in defence we are short. Phillips would be in today if not for his injury too.

John or Santiago? Another outfield option is always good. Anyway he didn't even blood Donley so he wouldn't have played the two I mentioned.

I'll need someone to back me up but I think Santiago got injured early November.

I'd agree about him getting a call up though.

No chance any youngster called up playing, but good for them to have exposure to the big match and good for morale for them to feel part of set up.

We had no wingers on the bench, so would have been good to see Soonsup-Bell there (whilst he is a striker, has been playing mostly RW for the U21) or Nile John (a CM but has occasionally played winger). Its a shame Santiago got injured, he would have been perfect.

Understand Mikey Moore has picked up a calf injury whilst on international duty which could see him out for up to six weeks.

Massive blow for the Academy with their FA Youth Cup 3rd round tie to be played on 5 December.

Blimey, who ran over the black cat crossing the road, we’re really in a run of cruel injuries?

Thats not good for Moore he was really developing well for the Academy.

On the issue of blooding youngsters I know we are all looking forward to seeing the likes of Donley, Dorrington and Phllips get their run outs and to test themselves at this level but I think we have to be realistic about them getting time ahead of other senior players who are currently more suited to the style and who have probably been working their socks off in training to get that game time.

For example, if I'm Hojbjerg, Dier (whether you like him or not) or better yet Skippy and I am busting a gut in training every day to try and get myself into the manager's reckoning and all of a sudden someone gets called up from the academy and after a few training sessions with the Seniors gets 10 mins at the end of the game over me then i'm fuming. I'm barely getting the game time that I deserve and Donley for example getting minutes that I could be getting is not a meritocracy.

We've heard the phrase "If you're good enough you're old enough" - but we also have to remember that you still have to be the best option to be good enough.

I'm not against it and I am looking forward to Donley getting his chance but i think it needs to be in the right circumstances, Ange still wants to win and playing inexperienced, less adapted players ahead of more experienced options is not the way to go

Understand George Abbott will be out for up to six weeks with an injury.

Massive blow for the hugely talented England youth international who made his first team debut away to Leeds last season.

I bet players are scared to go to the training ground through being injured with the curse. And end up stubbing their toe getting out of bed

"In other news Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Club have made an application to Enfield Council to upgrade their medical centre to full regional hospital status."

It's at the point now that you couldn't make it up.

Is it me? Or are there far more injuries this season?
And not just to us but across the board, including the women's game too.
It's a bit concerning.

Ange has said bts Dier and PEH specifically have no long term future here. I really don't care if "they are fuming". It's nonsense the three you mention Dier, Skipp or PEH are more suited to the current style that some of our youngsters, that doesn't mean the youngsters are better players(yet) btw, but they are 100% more suited to Ange's way of playing and will get better. Ange keeps saying it's about the long term vision, not the now and all he's interested in is progress. Well playing players you hope won't be here past January is not long term thinking it's short term appeasement for the square pegs.

Our academy has been very very poor for a long time. One of the main reasons for that is that kids would leave very early on to other better run clubs, or they just wouldn't choose us in the first place because we had no visible progression plan in place for them. These are facts by the way, we really struggled to bring in the better youngsters over many of the other local clubs because of this very problem. We are now at a point where our academy is flourishing mostly down to FP and his vision for the youth set up and integrating them into the first team. We are at a point now where many of the older boys are being looked at by a host of clubs. It's simple really we can choose to ignore them and they can leave or we can show them there could be a future here after youth football. If we dobn't show there is a pathway we could very quickly return to the point where the kids just don't come, and that would be a catastophe imo.

A meritocracy isn't just about hard work, it's about the merits of one person being placed above another. That includes hard work, but also includes suitability for the role, outright talent, fitness, form, etc. etc. If, to use your example, Ange decided that our team was going to be better with Donley in it than PEH, playing Donley absolutely is meritocratic.

You're right that senior players might not like it, but it's the way the world works. They will all have been on the other side of it too - not sure who Dier will have kept out of the team when he got into it, but no doubt someone who will have felt agrieved that he was losing his place to a youngster.
