We lead the league in points lost from a winning position (20) and also points gained from losing positions (19).

Figure that one out.

Losing Ali for the last two and Dembele for today has made a big difference. Dembele was a one off but Ali has a problem that needs to be sorted before the start of next season or he will become a liability. For all his talent if he carries on the way he has this season he will be out quite a few times through the season.
If Ali had been available for both the last 2 games and Dembele today I'm sure the results would have been different. Probably a win against both Chelsea and Southampton. So a moment of stupidity by both may have cost us the title for one but certainly a guaranted 2nd place now it will possibly be 3rd and again Arse will finish above us AGAIN !!!
Leicester haven't dropped the points that we would've needed for a chance to win anyway so I wouldn't say it cost is the title. Secondly we need a draw against Newcastle to finish above Arsenal, the same Newcastle that drew with Aston Villa, i'm not usually confident of results, but seriously . . .

I was confident of beating both WBA and Southampton........:(

For a team that has for the most part, had the best defensive record it is an interesting stat. However, if you look at the season as a whole and taking into consideration the earlier games where we drew that pattern of not seeing some games out has come up an awful lot.

We've got good players, we've got match winners but some times we lack an idea or spark which hopefully can be sorted with some coaching and good squad additions. We might be able to get away from that feeling that there is a chance for the opposition.

Well if you look at the article from the other thread, Dembele and All were rated 1st and 4th best box to box MF's in Europe. Miss those two in your line up and you are going to leave a hole in your engine room.

Just saw a stat on us;
Ranked #1 20pts Dropped - from winning position

Wasnt it only last year that we had pretty much the opposite? Most points won from coming behind..?

Wierd. I wonder why that is?

7 of those 20 have come in the last 3 games so don't look at it as a season long issue.

The players look knackered and we've lost the momentum that carried us so far.

Tired legs, tired minds and a group of deflated players at missing out on the league.

We lost both of them through lack of discipline which is frustrating. I know it's a different game but a rugby coach would go absolutely ballistic at that.

Poch is over training them maybe. Too many double sessions taking their toll. A lot of the players look burnt out. Toby in particular seems to have dipped alarmingly. I can see most of our players having poor Euros. Poch needs to learn from this and make adaptations.

Lol are you serious? We are 2nd in the league.

Maybe we should train them less and finish 5th as usual instead

Simple answer. We need more quality in the squad. Great first 11, but no one I could say would change a game if they came on.

Can sort this in the summer.

Basically, nail on head.

We need a bit more firepower of the bench. Then we can go on and get the goals we need.

We have a great mentality to pull together when behind and keep going, but we struggle somewhat with keeping a lead once in front. Think that's just naivety really. We'll get better at it.

If you had to put your balls on who's finish 2nd you'd go for Spurs, surely.

We've got the win and the draw, have a far superior side and Newcastle look like they'll have nothing to play for whereas we, on the other hand, do.

Objectively, I don't see why there is so much shitting the bed. Yes, stranger things have happened and we could lose and arsenal win but like I said, if I was forced to put my bollocks on it I would go for us.

We haven't finished above Arsenal in 21 years. Remember the last time it came down to the last game of the season at Upton Park we crumbled. All we had to do was beat Southampton at home to secure 2nd, We crumbled. We were winning at Stamford Bridge 2 goals up hadn't won there since 1990 what happened we crumbled.

I'm not at all confident we won't lose...Newcastle have a wired record against us they've already beaten us this season and will want to finish with a win.

Great post. I was talking to my friend about this just this morning.

It is weird. Saying that, I think it can be explained by the fact that we were picking up a lot of last minute winners because our team was so much more overtly attack minded. It meant that whilst we did score a lot of goals in tight games, we were prone to concede them too.

What's a bit strange is that we've scored more goals this season and obviously conceded fewer, so the argument that we've become more defensive at the expense of our attacking prowess doesn't necessarily hold true.

I think it's likely to be an element of end of season fatigue - it's been tough for us with the number of games we've played and we were fighting high on 3 fronts until recently.

I'm not sure why we've dropped so many points - but I would agree that perhaps we need some more solid heads out on the pitch. Having youth is great for the future, the players are full of energy, they are more pliable to knew training and tactical methods but I do think this is an example of one of the problems with a youthful team - the "holding it together" when the pressure's on.

We'll only improve as our squad grows together.

You're not looking at it objectively, IMO. Your subjectivity is shown by your sole argument resting on prior spurs teams (and might I add fucking ages ago)

Like I said, stranger things have happened but I don't reckon the bookies will agree with you, especially if Newcastle are already down

Yep it's interesting if you look back to when we had Keane, Kanoute, Mido and Defoe in the squad. Often the two strikers on the pitch would be subbed for the two on the bench just to mix it up. Then, about four years after that we had Berbatov, Keane, Bent and Defoe. Serious options on the bench. Obviously we played with two up front back then, but it would be nice to have a real threat on the bench rather than someone you hope might make a contribution, which is what we have now.
